Apple chose to cryptically promote a pre-release message in a format that would reach tens of millions (at least) of individuals overnight. That they did not need to invest a large amount of money or effort in reaching that audience is irrelevant.

Pre-release. Yesterday, Apple did not announce that The Beatles are now available on iTunes. They announced to the world that a life-changing event was going to occur the following day. Much of the modern world collectively held its breath and eagerly checked back in the morning. Hence the passionate arguments and dismissal.

So many posters are attempting to undermine the disinterested by using words like "campaign".

LOL. Fair enough :)

No problem. And to be fair on my side of it, I've been involved in creating advertising campaigns for many large companies, some of them bigger than Apple. I have a keen understanding of what constitutes a big, hype filled campaign, so when people prattle on about how this campaign was over hyped it gets under my skin, perhaps more than it should. But think about it this way: You work at a filling station. Every day people come in and fill their tanks so full that the gas spills out the fill neck and all over the paint on their car. No one says a word. Then one day someone comes in an puts two dollars worth of gas in a tank that can hold 20 gallons and people around you start screaming about how he's out of line for over filling his tank so drastically. That's basically what's happening here. Apple made very little stink about this event before it happened, yet there's a big contingent of people here who insist that they went WAY over the top. It's silly. And I only say silly because I don't want to use language that breaks the forum rules.

Seriously, why?

"Remember it for 24 hours" is a maybe.

A "day that I'll never forget" - hardly.

A "day that I'll never forget" would be for Apple to start selling lossless non-DRM music at 96 kHz/24-bit in an open format - and with a storefront that didn't require one to install that bloated pig of an application called Itunes.

Of course, on that day I'll remember that I spent most of it ice-skating in Hades.

I would pay double the prices talked about here for 96/24 lossless digital copies of the Beatles catalog. The massively compressed stuff - nope.

(I own Past Masters I & II, Abbey Rd, St. Peppers, & White Album on CD FWIW).

No Rubber Soul? You need to sort that one out.

And be sure to toss out "Let It Be" and include "Let It Be...Naked" instead.

This is GREAT news for the idiots who are too stupid to comprehend ripping cd tracks. Congratulations to them, they can now listen to the Beatles on their iPod for a nominal fee.

Best Selling CD of the last decade (1: The Beatles)

Yep. No one care about forty year old music

After all these years on MacRumors, I have realized one thing.

People are never happy. The only people who over-hyped this was the users and the tech media. Not Apple. It's like some kids at Christmas. After unwrapping all their presents, they say "That's it?" "I'm bored!"

You don't like the Beatles, that's fine. Your choice. But don't think your view represents everyone. There are people who will buy this stuff.

I'm sorry you didn't get :::insert Apple product here::: , but some of you people need to grow up. :(
it's a little different when your parents come in the room the day before and say, tomorrow is a day you'll never forget!

then you open up your xmas present to find a where's waldo book LOL

Except that that's not really what happened. The only people collectively holding their breath were hardcore Apple enthusiasts who made the mistake of reading WAY too much into it.

best news all day, was google voice finally coming out with their official app. more news then the beatles hype!

So, people who don't want to dick around with ripping CDs are idiots now? There's no other reasons that they might not want to go to the trouble of ripping other than their innate lack of intelligence? Glad you cleared that up.

lol and you are still arguing your point with other people. you couldn't win with me so move on to the next guy, that the idea?

Incorrect. I'm not here to "win" anything. I'm here to discuss topics I'm interested in. Others have made points worth addressing. You have not. Therefore, my discussion with you is over. My discussion with them continues. Here's a helpful piece of advice: not everything is about you.

ugh, give it up already! move along....

Two questions...

#Q1 : Where's The Beatles Movies (Yellow Submarine, etc...) & Music Videos / Films they did for some of their songs & when are they going to be on iTunes Music Video + Movie selection?

#Q2 : How is the Michael Jackson Estate figuring into this digital library availability on Apple's iTunes Store?

you have been arguing every point that isn't like urs all day long. maybe not everything is about "you" man.

Honestly, I don't know why Apple even announced it.. I can understand some people were expecting something else thats why they are a bit annoyed..

I personally couldn't careless about the Beatles :p. I wasn't born around that time, and not to mention even if I was a fan its not like it wasn't available at stores on cd's.. Its not like ripping the songs from a CD is complicated..

Anyway just my thoughts.. But no point in making a big deal about it..

Seems likely that they'll follow at some point. It's all about who owns the rights to the material and I'm not sure Apple Corps owns the rights to them.

#Q2 : How is the Michael Jackson Estate figuring into this digital library availability on Apple's iTunes Store?

Jackson only owned a 50% interest in the publishing rights, and he sold half of his interest in them to Sony BMG many years ago. His estate now only controls about a 25% interest in the publishing rights alone.

Yep, that about sums it up. Anyone who has been waiting years for itunes to get the Beatles so they can pay around $100 to buy the songs again instead of ripping a handful of cds is a textbook idiot. Its hard to think of a bigger kind of idiot.

Because of the history. You have to consider context. The legal battle between Apple and Apple Corps has been going on for over 30 years. It's one of the most important corporate disputes of the 20th century. Furthermore, Apple has taken a HUGE amount of heat over the lack of The Beatles on the iTMS ever since it opened.

Think of it this way: you go to a record store and look at their selection. They have a pretty good lineup of music, but they don't have a single Beatles record. That's a BIG omission in any retail operation that claims to have the most comprehensive selection of popular music available and one that gives the impression, mistaken or not, that the rest of the selection may be lacking too. The prestige of such a store would be drastically undermined by not having albums by the most successful, popular and influential pop music act of all time. That's why adding The Beatles to iTunes is a very big deal. It legitimizes Apple's iTunes Music Store as a truly comprehensive collection in the eyes of a not insignificant number of consumers.

If we go on the completely bogus assumption that your habits represent the habits of EVERY music consumer, then you'd have a point. Unfortunately for you, your habits are not the same as every other music consumer. People deal with their music purchases in many different ways. Expecting them to all behave exactly like you do is absurd.

Holy butt monkeys people here are stupid. You can't possibly overstate the importance the Beatles still have on the world. Think of your favorite band.... did they form after 1965? Yes? They would not have existed if it weren't for the Beatles.

While not entirely accurate, I do think the Beatles influence is felt in most forms of music today, especially popular music and the rest. Many of the top bands and acts of the last 20 years, consider them a significant influence.

When talking about music and iTunes it is absurd to dismiss the Beatles as anything but major. They are the most significant musical influence of the entire 20th century. They did not invent rock and roll, but they took it and expanded it and twisted it to set up all the various genres of music we have today.

Seems a lot of teenagers and 20-nothings don't have a proper reference and understanding for how much current music is the way it is because of the Beatles.

Maybe you should stop caring so much about a megacorporation who just cares about making profit. Seriously. Apple's just another company that makes plastic crap and sells it to you at ridiculous markup. Stop caring so much, they don't care about you.
.

What the hell are you talking about? I realize Apple doesn't care about me, I worked for them for 3 1/2 years! You must not be understanding a word I am saying. All I am saying is this is why people are upset. My personal opinion, I don't care. If it isn't about Apple Computers I really don't care.

Perfect. Fewer than 15 words, but spot on.

If I were a fanboi, I'd be embarrassed for Apple.

I'm embarrassed for all the negative posters who didn't get whatever imaginary Apple gear they were hoping for this time around and are taking it out on a harmless content announcement which constituted nothing more than a temporary change to a website.

I dont see how putting a CD into a computer to save $100 is a "habit", or how putting a cd into a computer to get your music now instead of 10 years from now is considered a "habit"

Exactly. The Beatles are not just some band from the 60s. They're the pop music equivalent of Picasso or the classical music equivalent of Mozart. EVERYTHING that comes after The Beatles is colored by the ground they broke.

I dont see how putting a CD into a computer to save $100 is a "habit", or how putting a cd into a computer to get your music now instead of 10 years from now is considered a "habit"

Then you need to think about it a little more. Clearly you're stuck in your personal worldview and have trouble imagining any other way of doing things than how you do.

QFT!!! Brilliant Post. Sometimes I wish Apple would just go away and then we would have boring tech from Microsoft and no innovation so these crybabies can see what they are missing.

We'd have the exact same stuff it just wouldn't have an Apple on it. You do realize that Apple buys almost all its technology and slaps its pretty design around it and a logo on it. Apple doesn't think of it all.
