For the 4G iPhone I want:

1. Available on other networks.
2. Notification light.
3. Same size/body/shape as the current iPhone.

For OS 4.0 I want:
1. Fully customizable (lockscreen, wallpapers, sounds, etc)
2. Background/multitasking
3. An "open" desktop concept like Android where you can add widgets, move icons around, etc.
4. Multiple Exchange account capability.

Hardware:
  • Generic RFID transmitter (active+"simulated" passive) and receiver; API-integrated
  • Front-facing camera
  • Back-facing microphone, destructively merge with voice microphone
  • Capacitive layer covering entire glass overlay, not just screen - for sexy gestures *cough* Pre *cough*
  • Unlikely: screen which exceeds the current black bezel to reach the entire glass edges

Software:
  • Bluetooth file transfer protocol support
  • Disable landscape switching when app is launched while device is already landscape (lying in bed)
  • Wi-Fi iTunes sync - automatic, based on proximity
  • "Good" notifications implementation, not a mass of alerts *cough* Pre *cough*
  • User-controlled multitasking/multi-app support *cough* Pre *cough*

My proposed G? would automatically connect to the nearest and clearest tower, whatever the carrier and wherever you are and that you then pay per the use. Apple would bill you through iTunes and pay the carriers their share. And keep theirs, of course. This would act like a subsidy.

It would be totally democratic, people paying for their needs only, not subsidizing each other. Do I have to pay for twice as much gas as I use so that RV owners can afford their gas?

Then, if Carrier V has more and better towers than Carrier A, they would get more "hits" and would make more money.

You could choose, under preferences, which carrier your favorite is and it would always search for that carrier and use it if it was useable. That way the carriers would compete on both price and quality and there would be an incentive to cover a wider area.

Also, if you take into account all the towers built by all the companies, coverage is obviously better than the hopeless task of any one company trying to do it all and consumers having the choice only of bad options, as it is now.

Obviously, iPhone sales would soar if it was actually useable by everyone! The combined coverage of all the carriers would mean they could step back from the mad tower-building they have to do now, and the increasing problems of getting them approved locally.

There could be, as part of the deal because the govt. would be involved, cooperative towers built in more remote areas. Obama wants broadband in the rural areas, so this is a way to do that. If the costs and the profits are shared then it would work. They might be a sort of tax for the rights to operate.

Then worry about how crappy the camera is and all that stuff.

I just simply want a new design. the 3GS is plenty fast and stable and does everything I need well.

This is my own speculation: I feel like apple will in the very least reduce the black areas in the front of the phone, above and below the screen and either make the phone shorter in length or make the screen bigger. I only base this on the fact that they reduced the size of the chin with the new iMacs and Apple design changes tend to carry over to several of their products. Again thats just my own silly speculation.

Spotlight Calendar search

One obvious software 'enhancement' that very few seem to have spotted (or are worried about): Please can the Spotlight search go further back than 12 months in Calendar?
I love my iPhone dearly but in this respect it still doesn't do what my old Palm would. I was so excited at the prospect of Spotlight coming to the iPhone with OS 3, and so disappointed to find it was so limited. As another commentator pointed out, if you set your iPhone's system date back a year then you can search one year further back, etc. etc. So it doesn't seem to be a space or processing power issue - just a limitation of the software.
All the other hoped-for improvements would of course be very nice, but this one small thing would make me sooooo happy!

-google maps navigation
-upcoming appointments/alarms
-weather to detect GPS co-ordinates
-front camera
-better battery

My wish list:

 64GB space
 Better camera, at least 5 MP
 5 icon dock
 Slightly bigger screen (and thereby slighty bigger phone)
 USB 3.0!
 Stereo speakers
 FLASH!
 Messaging without slide to open
 Folders
 Harder better faster stronger ...

The next iPhone better be epic, the competition is really heating up.

I remember the first time I held and used the original iPhone, I thought I was using something from the future. It was absolutely incredible. The iPhone has held up well but it's time for something dramatic. Hopefully Apple won't disappoint.

The next iPhone better be epic

I think it may be huge. There is a good chance the whole interface may be redesigned by taking cues from the tablet. There have been reports of the tablet having an new way to interact with it. Chances are the iPhone will get some of those features as well.

I believe my list is all achievable, and something that should not really be a big ask from a company such as :apple:

iPhone Hardware
- Wireless N card
- New design
- Better camera (5mp will do just fine for me) - with flash

OS 4.0 Wishlist

- Reply to and send text messages without closing current app - Like QuickReply for SMS
- Auto silent the phone at set times (like profiles) (useful in meetings, at night etc) - like Auto Silent
- Customizable Voice Commands - record and use your own commands
- New UI - a facelift of the current interface
- Remove limitations on Bluetooth - send photos to other mobile users
- Quicker to turn settings on/off - Wi-Fi, GPS etc (preferably without closing app - similar to SBSettings)
- Customizable SMS tones
- 5 Icon Dock

I'm pretty sure hardware will do like you wish and the OS might have some of that.

Updated official rumor list in first post. Some are less trustable (there are several rumors it's going to be launched in March, April and May... lol).

How about Inductive battery charging (no need for a cable connection) to go along with wireless sync. Put an induction charger pad on the current iMac stand at it's base.

That way you simply put your iPod, iPhone or whatever other "iDevice" down under the iMac screen and it auto-charges right away.

Heck, could even have a sensor in the induction pad to determine what device it is charging and have iTunes auto-sync on connection/recharge as it currently does when you connect by cable.

No wires, no mess.

Wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, wireless charging for iDevices with wireless sync...and an incentive for someone in love with their iPhone to consider purchasing an Apple iMac accessory to it (hehe).

How about the %$£%@$£ synchronizing of 'to do' notes between iCal and some sort of App on the iPhone? This issue has been around since at least 2008 and while there are apps that allow you to do this, they're far from elegant and easy to install. Or am I missing something? :(

Hardware:

1. Better camera with flash
2. Two speakers, dual audio please...
3. Dedicated camera button or one big button (software)

Software:

1. Better youtube app. it's great we can comment, favourite and other things, but I want my phone to sync up with what I've watched on my phone to the website, so that it's not on my home screen again.
2. Folders. I love the amount of screens we are able to have, but I think I'd prefer folders to clean up my screens a bit.
3. An apple trailers app would be nice. I'm aware of the current apps available, but it would be nice to see one from apple too, as there are some trailers that don't show up on the other apps.
4. Background Wallpapers, ability to edit ringtones on iphone (can this be done already?)
5. A decent camera app, to take pics is good, although I'd like to edit them slighty, i.e. grab url for forum posting, crop, rotate, frame all within the camera app, then I could rule out some of the other apps I have floating on my phone.

Just my two cents...

I'm getting so excited about OS 4.0!!
It'll be like Christmas all over again :)
anybody else?!

wishlist: improved battery life/ higher resolution/ improved Youtube app/ new layout for apps
