So, what happened to the 4.0 event? Isn't it time we heard something, I do realize that the iPad and iPhone share the OS, but that shouldn't mean that all iPhone development should stop while they iron out bugs un the iPad.

We may not hear anything this year until the next hardware intro in late June at WWDC. If the AI report about multitasking is to be believed, which they say is far from being complete, there might not even be a demo-ready version of the OS. Also, they may try to conceal it from competitors as much as possible, if it's really unique, so they don't attempt to copy it.

This one is likely taking longer because there's probably a lot more they want to make sure functions perfectly, like the multitasking. I say we hear about it mid april, late april at the latest. Then it still comes out june/july with the hardware.

Book it.

OS improvement:

Someone mentioned earlier: including something similar to SBSettings. What a wonderful feature for jailbroken phones. One touch brings up a screen where you can choose from many settings to turn on/off (wifi, bluetooth, 3g, location, push, etc).

The current OS is a total pain to adjust settings.

Here are some of my thoughts over the hardware list on the main post:

- Better 3D graphics
As far as I know it's a PHONE why would you need better 3D graphics? It's an amazing phone for what it has and implenting junk just makes the battery life lower

- Infrared
Is this necessary? I mean what phones still have infrared, this is subsituted with Bluetooth.

- Higher resolution: High Definition?!
Its a phone! It has an AMAZING definition, improving it just wont make sense as its to small to notice and would drain the battery life, something EVERYONE wants to see an improvement on

- Fingerscanner
Just seriously... This is a Phone not a latest high-tech security device. Why on earth would you need a fingerscanner on your phone? It's just ridiculous.

Those of us who also use our phones as our primary iPods would notice, I assure you.

The new iPhone...

Hey guys!

Well it's nearing that time when we all are anticipating the new iPhone again. I know I am I've only had my 3GS for 4months and it is probably my most cherrished posession!

The new items I think that prevent a lot of black berry users or android users from using the iPhone is A) no external LED to indicate an event or message unread B) own pin network for free messeging (bbm) and multitasking.

However I think the new iPhone should have something else to pit it in a league of their own once again. Infured allowing it to be a universal remote for just about anything in the house. As well as A BUILT IN FM transmitter for all your music.

Obviously we all want to see a bright LED flash and something greater than a 5Mpx camera with full HD Video and a better resolution screen... But is all this too much to ask??

Not all of us...

I couldn't care less about "greater than a 5Mpx camera with full HD Video"
If I want a camera/video with that capability, I will have a separate device, not a phone

Your wrong and playing devils advocate... If u just wanted a phone as a phone you wouldn't get an iPhone. It took "just a phone" and changed it into a mini computer. If u want to have a phone and a seperate mp3 player and a seperate camera and a seperate video camera be my guest. Most if not all consumers will be looking for convience and ease of use all in one utility. Phone, camera, video, mp3, email, Internet, USB drive, excel office, and if u can make that experiance easy and convienient with good results there is no one who would rather having 8 seperate devices when one would suffice. don't be stupid I stated a lot of bb users like the external events led notification system which is a decent idea and not too much to ask

Oh, so I am being stupid? Really? Thanks for that

I like the camera and video it has, but I don't need it to do professional quality
What it does is fine for me and I won't be filming weddings with it

And I didn't mention the events notification at all or any of the other items in your list
You said "obviously we all"
Don't speak for me, whether you think I am being stupid or not

Is it really possible to have one device that does all those things? In the future, yes. Now? It's possible, but will we see it? Nope. No company is going to do something that stupid. They release everything slowly and always leave room to sell you something later. Planned obsoletism. Companies have always done this. As of right now, it's best to have a separate camera if you really want good photos. Why does an iPhone cost 500 dollars off contract, and a brand new 14MP Canon SD1400is is 279 dollars at best buy? Think about it. For now, I'll keep my blackberry storm 2 which does everything a mobile COMMUNICATION device should do, better than an iPhone. And, I'll take a Canon SD1400is in silver. :D

I didn't mean to call u stupid, sorry I was merely pointing out the blatent fact that it is a battle of the best out there. Android is co ing out with the droid 2 which has full 1080p video and an 8Mpx camera with dual LED flash. This is very appealing to me when I go out I want to be able to take good quality photos and video that can be of my nephew and good quality. I don't want to have to carry my camera and my video camer over when I could have both in my pocket as well as my phone email etc.

What I was getting at was the competition is heating up and the new iPhone needs to sweep people off their feet like the origional did.

The words in bold are the last words you should use.

Why does it matter what "a lot" of BB users want?

BTW, this is about the 50th thread on this.

What?? So confused as to the point you're trying to get accross... But nice red colors... And devils advocate just means playing both sides of the argument regardless of your true feelings on the topic...

Why does it matter what "a lot" of BB users want?
it matters because this is their single biggest competitor, next highest is android phones and we all know the feud going on between apple and google right now. Apple has a chance to shut everyone up and blow the top off this pop stand.

I agree that I would like to replace my Mino HD but those specs that you tout that are rumored to be coming on the Nexus Two are just ridiculous and are meant to fool those who care only about specs. Why?:

-720p on my Mino HD can be extremely jerky because of the lack of optical image stabilization on the lens. It only becomes far more worse under 1080p (more frames with more detail) and most can't even view that size on their TV or monitor. Those that can will not get Blu-Ray quality out of it. This is not even considering the huge file sizes it creates when filming for a short period of time.

-an 8MP camera is useless because there won't be a high-quality lens and the lens will be too small. It will just allow for a larger picture size but will also make the picture far more grainy. 5MP is really the breaking point unless mobile hardware makers are willing to to put the same kind of lens that are, at the very least point and shoots, into phones. Right now the Droid has more MP but it is universally agreed upon that the 3GS takes a better picture.

There is a point where increased specs only creates diminishing returns.

The 'What I Want From The iPhone 4G' Thread...

Okay guys, the rules are that you have up to three points where you can list what you most want from the iPhone 4G when it is released later this year. I'm going to go with just 2 and then explain my choices. ;)

  • Multitasking
  • Improved HD Camera

Multitasking is a must when competing with other options already on the market. I can see Apple being arrogant about this in the same way they were about the one-button mouse, especially given that the iPad has just been released and doesn't have it. If they're sensible, I hope they listen to everyone who has been asking for multitasking and include it in both iPhone and iPad updates soon.

This is one of the only things I can complain about on the iPhone - For example... I'd really like it if Safari completed loading a web page in the background while I use in other applications. I appreciate that it saves the application exactly as I last left it, but I wish it would finish completing the last task I left it doing as well.

The camera is another huge issue. Come on everyone... :) Let's be honest here... the iPhone camera is still a joke, even when compared with cameras on phones from years ago. It's still worse than the camera on the free Sony Ericsson phone I bought in 2004.

The quality of the photos are abysmal in anything other than full daylight and there are no options at all except to switch between video and still photo. It just seems like a complete and utter afterthought and is in dire need of some attention.

I've completely stopped taking photos with my phone now as it's so poor. If Apple were to say "Well it's a phone, not a camera!" then firstly simply don't bother putting a camera in there at all as this one is pathetic compared to the competition, and secondly, don't include all of this functionality for accessing and viewing photos on the iPhone.

The iPhone does many things very well, but that only highlights just how poor the quality of the camera is, and I'm sorry, but the iPhone camera is the worst one on the market by a very long way at the moment.

Does anyone have the Meebo app? I love how you can swipe right/left to move from conversation to conversation without having to go "back" to the list of conversations. I hope Apple implements a feature like this for the Messages app, it would rock and be oh-so much more convenient. :D

Safari does complete loading of a web page in the background while you use other apps.

Megapixels is not the only factor in picture quality. In the comparisons that I have read, the photos from a 3GS are of better quality than most 5-megapixel camera phones.

For example, the Droid.

How about the ability to install more than 11 pages worth of aps and not need iTunes to manage them!

You can currently install more than 11 pages worth of apps. Any additional apps that don't fit on screen are available via spotlight search.

lol I just got a call from a Carphone Warehouse salesman (Carphone Warehouse is a major unofficial iPhone seller in the UK) who was trying to get me to buy a new phone+contract. I told him I was waiting for a new iPhone to come out this summer and he was like "The iPhone you are talking about is the iPhone 4G. Apple had planned to release it this summer, but there won't be new iPhones until next year now." After he said that, I just tried as hard as I could to get to the "bye" part of the conversation- What a load of crap  He said I should get the 3Gs for the meantime.. yeah right.. like I want to be bound to another contract when the new iPhone comes out

I love salesman! They'll make up anything to get you to buy!
