I love that concept.. hopefully the back would be aluminum..

I don't think the hardware changes will be radical. And they kind of have a great advantage and a great drag at the same time in the uniform resolution from model to model. So don't expect the screen to get bigger anytime soon. And the famous grid isn't going anywhere either. Although, I'd love to be proven wrong.

However, the redesign is due, and below is my take on how it would look, baring in mind their current design language. I'm just interested in whether people think they'll do that, or will stick with the current design.

As cool as that looks, I'm not a huge fan of the sharp edge that design will create. The way the iPhone is right now is by far the most comfortable to hold. I do agree that it needs some sort of facelift (if anything, to distinguish it from past generations) but considering the iPhone is really just a screen and one button, there's not a lot to redesign. We'll probably just see an internal spec bump which (hopefully) includes that dual-core chip rumor.

As for software...

- Notification badges in the top bar
- Ability to respond to a text message within another app
- Some sort of universal backgrounding, with a good task manager (allowing you to close apps, etc.)
- Easier access to key settings (either a redesign of the over-impacted settings app, or an SBSettings-like system)

The text / mms app needs tweaking! I hate the fact that it doesn't try to resend the message if it failed on the first attempt. Surely it wouldn't take much to tweak the os to check for failed transmissions - and then to resend until successful? Is it a battery issue maybe? Maybe only allow the os to try to send 3 times?

A 3rd option to 'reply from here' when you receive a text message. ie do not close the current app!

I would also like to 'edit' the lockscreen.

Show / hide slider bar, add apps - all of which i have done through jailbreak - but i would like to be able to do it through a more stable & approved route!

A communications centre manager 'app' would be nice. The ability to switch on / off all the comms settings such as location services, 3g, wife, phone etc - similar to SBSettings does - but have it open if you press & hold the top left for 2 seconds (where the signal strength is)

Below is a quick screenshot of my lockscreen....

I'm sure if I had a wife I'd also want to shut her off!

That is so darn beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I really wish that Apple will drop the chrome bezel for this. It's brilliant.

Thank you, you are very much welcome. I just wanted to see what the people would think, as I personally am longing after a redesign.

Well, it's still going to be rounded, just less bulky and less wasted space. And a glass plate edge-to-edge design like on a current iMac. And a touch sensitive HOME button, of course - enough with the little dusts.

Also, one think I'd really want, but that's probably not going to happen, is to be able to remove/disable useless (for me) apps from the home screen - like stocks etc.

I just want the phone to transfer data via bluetooth. Is it so hard? Is it too much to ask for? I mean, you can't even upload your contacts to a BT system in a car!!! My wife's LG Xenon does that!

Here is what I want:

1. Higher resolution screen (800x480 or higher)
2. Multi-tasking app switching like the WebOS
3. Unobtrusive notifications like in WebOS or Android
4. Today screen with agenda view, weather and unread message summary
5. More RAM
6. Faster processor

I don't think any of these are unreasonable.

All I want, which could be added via firmware update:

1) background processes
2) central storage area for documents, like we have for photos

As you can see, after 2 years with the iPhone, I have lowered my standards to just the very basics.

I know for a fact that number 3 = reality.

All of your thoughts are lovely!
I would like to see (software)....
-Instead of SMS within applications, when you press 'view' the current application is put on "hold," backgrounded that is it, and once you have pressed the 'send' button you are then automatically sent right back to the application.
-Double-click home button in order to go to the previous application. For example, you followed a link from mail to Safari. Once you are done checking out the website, simply double-click and you are back in mail.
-Upcoming song(s) view/selector. Let's just say that I am about to take a shower and I want the next three songs to be specific songs, but I don't want to go making a new playlist every time I take a shower. Or I am listening to a good song and I want to make sure the next song is a good one too.
-Like in Safari 4.0, visual history might not be such a bad idea. Same with top sites
-A screensaver would be nifty
-New/customizable app-to-app transitions
-A (transparent?) status bar in Camera.app. I am pretty sure that all other native apps show the status bar at all times, it's just consistency
-Dvorak keyboard

As has been mentioned before, the ability to quickly access frequently used settings such as brightness without having to navigate through the sluggish application.

I know for a fact that number 3 = reality.

How do you know that. I hope people at Apple actually used the PNS to realize how crappy the alert system really is and have a centralized place to look at all the alerts you have.

correction: apple does see posts like this. not just from this website, but other forum websites about their iphone.

i can guarantee this cause my half-brother works for apple as a developer and he's always on forums looking for new ideas to pass on. that's how apple gets its new ideas, they read forums and blogs about what the customers want

not only do I know three people that work at Apple and this is COMPLETELY true, I send them feedback nearly twice a month after pretty much any update they do and they've almost always added those features, especially if they're software based like tapping the home screen to bring up controls etc.

If we want apple to see this, which we do, all someone has to do (OP?) is re-compile the entire list after a few days into a final post, then copy and paste it in to the apple.com/feedback section and someone at apple WILL see it.

I like the sharp edges much better because you can actually HOLD ON TO IT and it doesn't slip out of your hand as easily and you don't have to wrap your greasy fingers all over the chrome that stays shiny for about 2 seconds unless you have alcohol/windex with you 24/7 to wipe it off with. Honestly I understand that the design is very simple and almost timless, but it does not feel like a PHONE, it feels like something I'm frightened of damaging or losing and I have nightmares about thrice a month that I fall in a lake or there's a flood and my iPhone gets water damage and then my whole life falls apart and my teeth fall out.

Ideas that people haven't mentioned on this thread so for that are plausible and I'd love to see:

1) READ TEXT MESSAGES OUTLOUD!! One of the things I suggested to them alread that they sort of have done by making the voice over activate by tapping the home screen three times is read text/emails/etc outloud. This is really useful, for example, if you get a long and important email and your hands are busy (cooking, driving, having intercourse with yourself or a third party, etc) and you need to read the email but you can't hold the phone or don't want to get it dirty you can just tripple tap the home screen and then tap the text once and it reads it outloud - it can do this now and I love it but you still have to touch the phone. What I find ridiculous is that this software is ALREADY in the phone and apple understands taht when you're busy (i.e. driving or working out) and you CAN"T touch the phone, the remote mic and voice over are great for calling people, answering calls, and playing/organizing music, but it DOESN"T READ TEXT MESSAGES TO YOU! All they need to do is when you get a text and it notifies you, make it so you can double/tripple tap the remote and it READS IT OUTLOUD to you so you don't have to take your eyes off the road or stop running to take out your phone! Or, add a "read text message" command to voice over! It's not hard and it's 100% capable of this already, they just need to change the interface.

2) A text message count would be nice per person, that way I can compare how frantic different people are because face it, I (we?) have almost entire relationships with people chronicled in my Messages app.

3) Sleep mode/profiles!!! Someone vaguely mentioned this I think, but we seriously need to be able to switch quickly between more than just vibrate and not! Sometimes we want vibrate, sometiems we need it just silent, and somtimes we need full volume! If, for instance, I go to bed early or need to sleep in and a drunk friend or early bird colleague calls me and it's not serious I DON"T WANT TO HEAR IT OR FEEL IT VIBRATE and many times my friends and I have turned the phone to silent only to completely forget that vibrate has been turned off in silent and when we switch it back we miss important calls. A simple "all off" position on the switch would be nice or even soft button from the home screen to select profiles (i.e. at work, asleep, napping, shower, etc.) And, in case it's really important, i.e. death in the family, you could set it so that if someone calls two, three, or four times the Nth ring will ring no matter what, even if you have it on silent mode. That way really important calls (or persistent callers) could get through if they need to but unimportant social calls won't interrupt your current meeting/sleep/intimacy etc.

4) built in powermat support :) ... it's a wishlist!

Already mentioned that I feel strongly about:

:apple:FLASH ON CAMERA as well as flashlight functionality!
:apple:ADOBE FLASH SUPPORT for videos etc
:apple:All the internal improvements that people mentioned would be great, I really need 64gigs or more to even come close to holding just my music
:apple:HD output would be great, including being able to rent HD through the iTunes store directly on the phone, esp to finish up later on comp/TV at home
:apple:in-app text messaging
:apple:did i mention flash?

Much longer lasting battery - with that opens so many things

The iphone can already do so much...how about replacing digital cameras completely

bump up the specs....the 3GS was a great improvement...I'd like to see a huge jump like that again

support for wider format of video files - always hated their ipod line because of this..and they continued it on the iphone

There is an app for that is a nice slogan...but how about some innate support. Companies use this against the iPhone all the time despite there being an app that does exactly that.

So, I'm going to add these 'wishes' in the main post. I write it down a little bit shorter, but it comes down to the same.

(ideas of DocNYz):
1) Read a text outloud (e.g. composing emails, just with your voice or what like "Google ..." and it's going to Google for that?!).
2) A text message counter
3) Profiles
4) Powermat support

Notes:
1) Voice Control really needs to be improved. Some of you might not know this, but in other languages Voice Control is really ****ed up (e.g. names like "Michael Jackson" are pronounced worldwide like in English, but Voice Control still 'translates' it and than you get a whole other name.
2) Non
3) Apple should make it like it's easy to set it up, so without a manuel or something...
4) Nice, but what about actual wireless energy?! (it's possible, e.g. with Christmas lights

(ideas of neilp4453)
5) Support for wider format of video files

Now got to go, but later today I'll add some other ideas you guys posted (e.g. ideas from Gurtz or so).

Bye!

EDIT: Also added some new ideas of my own like:

- Touch-sensitive places at all corners (at left and right of home button and top right and top left) (so you can use an app without blocking your view with your hands and it would be a great improvement like 'scrolling' or something like that) with easy turn on and off like double tap in corners at the same time (you won't have an 'accident double tap at two corners at the same time haha).
- Wireless syncing

Clearly, the iPhones needs a higher resolution at fixed screen size, so that the human eye cannot notice a difference. We just like to know that the spec numbers are "better."

On similar thought, the new iPhone needs at least a new Core i7, never minding that it is a mobile device where more processing power translates to less battery life in most instances.

The camera should include an x-ray vision feature.

FM-radio is overrated. It is a standard feature on every other mp3-player now. The iPhone needs to distinguish itself from that, much like the Blackberries.

Im on an iPhone and can't quote only part of the message but this is only relating to the first part on the screen.

Seriously? Are you blind? Walk into any Verizon, AT&T, T-mo, or Sprint (I think) store and look at one of the new BBs. The 9000, 8900, 8520, etc.

The screen resolution is AMAZING!!! It is the best res screen I have ever seen and is an absolute pleasure to use. The iPhone resolution is TERRIBLE in comparison to that. Absolutely incomparable.
