I am worried that the new 4.0 update that is coming up ( I know it hasn't been official) will not be available for the iphone 3g. Is this possible and do you think that will happen?

I think it would be 3G compatible too because 3.0 was still compatible with the 2G, but it left out some features like bluetooth and MMS. So whatever is in 4.0, the newest iPhone(4th Gen) will get the most out of the software, 3GS will probably lose 1-2 things and the 2G and 3G will probably just get the lowest of new features, most likely because of the hardware.. just my opinion.

Apple's stated policy is to support free software upgrades on iPhones for two years. Since the iPhone 3G is still currently sold by Apple, I don't think you have much to worry about. Of course, there will likely be features of the new OS that are not supported on older hardware.

Um. What? You don't even know what the 4.0 update contains, or even if there is a 4.0 update.

Why don't you go read a nice book, or go to the gym and get some exercise. Being "worried" about an unannounced software update to your mobile phone is, well, pathetic.

WTF are you even talking about. There's no new iPhone coming out so why would there be a 4.0, if anything there would be a 3.2 update

With no firmware betas being distributed to Developers, it looks like 3.2 could be dead in the water. By this time last year, 2.2 was already out I believe.

Don't get your hopes up. I think they're pushing back new features to the 4.0 release. Maybe we'll get 4.0 earlier.

Most possibly but it surely will be available as every update, except that it is more optimized for the new iPhone rather than the previous gens.

I have been waiting for 3.2 too. Hope this will be coming out soon!

better be compartible

I am definitely getting an iphone when I renew my contract in 2010 .. I hope the iphone 4G has a lot of changes on hardware parts, especially the 5.0 MP camera, and better case reasonable anti-crack and anti-shock. Otherwise I will just upgrade from 3G to 3GS.

The next iPhone will probably have a better processor, perhaps even a dual core one from ARM. Should be a prime candidate for better multitasking. Apple might not allow such multitasking on the 3GS, which would be a real bummer.

I wouldn't worry about something you have no control over. I would imagine 4.0 would be 3G compatible.

I hope it isn't, and I think it is unreasonable to expect the new OS to work with a two generation old device. I have no desire for Apple to cripple the operating system so that it will work with the antiquated hardware of the 3G.

I think that the next update will be so drastic, that the 3G might not be able to handle it.

The reason I think it'll be so significant is because, frankly, the current iPhone OS is getting a bit old.

What are you expecting/hoping for?

720p Video Recording

5.0 Megapixel Camera with Flash and a much much bigger lens so that it actually takes decent photos even in very low light situations

4G Capable

Wifi N

Bluetooth 3.0

HDMI TV Out/Projector Out So We Can Run High Res Movies & Slideshows Stored on Our Phone on our HDTVs.

A Low Reflective Screen Mode For When You Wish To Read Ebooks On The iPhone

Not as much real estate wasted on the front of the phone as current iPhones (The black part on the top and bottom of the iphone need to be much smaller, basically, almost all of the front of the phone should be the screen) It's ugly how much space/real estate is wasted on the current design of the front of the iPhone

Front facing camera so that we could make videocalls, atleast while connected to Wifi N

iChat Support

Flash Support (I want to access hulu from my iphone damn it!)

RFID Chip & IR Chip (So that you can use it as a universal remote)

Removable/Replacable Battery

A sexy looking gamepad addon that adds dual analog sticks and dual triggers to the iPhone so that gaming on the iPhone actually becomes FUN

Available for T-mobile, Sprint, Verizon & AT&T

If the iPhone 4G pulls this off, I could easily see it leaving Nokia, Blackberry, Andriod and every other Smartphone in the dust.

If you don't think this is going to happen, please tell me what specifically don't you think is going to happen.

Almost every feature listed above is a feature that another smartphone already offers or is scheduled to offer starting next year. So why won't a near future iPhone offer that same functionality?

Remember, Apple gets paid $700-$800 for each iPhone. ($200-$300 from the end user and another $500 from the carrier). Plus, Apple makes a boatload of money on Apps.

Every single feature above can easily be implemented into an $800 device by next summer.

I hate to be the guy to wake you from your wet dream, but you'll be lucky to see 3, maybe 4 from your list. :D

What exactly don't you think can be feasibly implemented into the next iPhone?

Point me to anything on that list and I can show you a smaller device far cheaper than the iPhone that already offers that same feature, or is scheduled to start doing so by next summer.

Heck, the $230 Microsoft Zune that came out three months ago already includes many of the features on that list. And it costs less than a third of what the iPhone costs.

Ooh, I'll bite.

640x480 screen. So while Apple and everyone is moving to wider screens on more products, Apple will suddenly make a 'square' screen?

1 Ghz of Ram. No comment.

Gamepad addon. That's not part of the iPhone. But these are already in developement.

IR. TV. Handy, in the rare situation, but no thanks. I don't need more bulk, and more junk crowding the inside of my phone.

Also, people who care about these specs are a very small minority of all possible iPhone purchasers. Apple is would rather make stuff work, and make sure that if they include new features that people would know how to take advantage of it. Features for the sake of features really only caters for the small minority.

..sure all those features are possible and every smart phone already has them but come on! it took us two years to get MMS...while every smart phone had it for almost a decade

I highly doubt it would happen...They will more than likely throw in more RAM, FM radio, more GB of storage and new design...

The Omnia phone takes 12.1 megapixel photos with flash, the Google Phone takes 5 Megapixel Photos with Flash. It's almost a guarrentee that the iPhone 4G will be able to match that as well.

As for 720P Video Recording. Never going to happen is what people said about 480p recording a few months ago, and the 3GS came out and proved them wrong. The $200 Flip Recorder that's smaller than the iPhone takes 1080p video these days. So there's no reason why a $800 phone won't.

A Backlit OLED screen is a major feature of virtually every single recent Driod phone as well as the $230 Zune. So it's pretty much a guarentee on the iPhone 4G.

Every single feature on this list is very feasible.

Good point. I was off on my math. I meant to write 720x480.
