Yes, Apple is to blame for high demand and the activation systems of their partner carriers going down.I'd be careful of attributing malice instead of incompetence.
I do know that Rogers was down but apparently Telus and Bell were OK.
The real issue I have is that the line did not move and the promise by one of the staff that they would take names and numbers and allow people to pick up the phone by close of business tomorrow was a lie. I checked the front of the line several times and if they took down more than 10 names and numbers in the space of 90 minutes I would be surprised.
Essentially, they wanted to keep the crowd that they had there. In my 90 minutes of queuing up only about 8 people lined up after me (this was lunchtime at the main Apple store). Someone who was roughly #100 in the line told me he had been lining up since 5:30 am. So in 6.5 hours 100 people roughly joined the line.
This was orchestrated.
