I believe the iPhone 4 can only be purchased unlocked through apple.ca.

Guys, a couple of questions:

1) I'm a T-Mobile USA customer and was interested in getting a Canadian unlocked iPhone. I know that the Apple.ca store does not allow shipments to addresses outside that country, so I was planning to order one on the apple.ca website and have it shipped to a friend in Toronto. Is this possible?

2) Also, if my friend turns around and ships it to me in the US, will he have to pay duty on it or just the flat shipping fee? If I have to pay duty in addition to the likely $649 cost, I know it can get expensive.

3) I do have a trip schedule to Montreal on 8/12. If it is out by then, can I just walk into an Apple store there and buy it outright without being a resident?

Thanks in advance for your help!

1. yes.

2. you'll probably have to pay duty...not your friend.

3. yes.

1. it's not out yet so we don't know. but you will likely need a canadian credit card
2. yes. best thing to do would be option #3
3. wait and grab it yourself, i doubt they'll ask for ID since you're not buying it on a contract.

Re #3: If it's anything like the way they're selling the unlocked 8GB 3GS - they won't ask for ID. I just picked up an unlocked 3GS from the Apple store and they basically got it out for me, processed the payment, and I was outta there.

Best thing is #3 since you are on your way here anyways.

Your other options would just cost more

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards option 3 anyways, but that's all contingent on it being released by then and in stock as well.

Good news?

Rogers employees training on iPhone 4 iss not really much but means it is coming soon!

Not sure if this was already discussed or not, but at both Rogers and Telus, the SKU's for the 16GB and 32GB iPhone 3GS's have been discontinued. Rogers now only sells the 8GB, as well as Telus, along with some "refreshed" models (Telus only). Surely they can't go 2-3 weeks without being able to sell new 16GB iPhones?! Maybe the launch is sooner than we are anticipating.

Interesting.. I do know for sure that some Canadian carriers definitely still have stock of 16/32 3GS iPhones.. though it seems like stock for those products move very fast.

I should clarify. What's left in stores is it. They cannot be ordered anymore (online or into stores).

I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities available once it's actually released in Canada, which is going to be in 2011 the way things are looking.

I almost hope so because even if it was available today in Canada I wouldn't buy one. I need the phone to work as a phone. I use it as my home phone, cell phone and side business phone.

i think people are blowing this way out of proportion. i mean you don't hear people sending their phones back by the masses like how they bought them. everyone is still keeping them and i think they will release it to canada as per their schedule. i just want the white iphone4 to be released at the same time.

Rogers Account Information Down

Hmmmm .... I just went to check my Rogers account online and I got a message that says.

Weird.

Do you think that the announcement from Consumer Reports will delay the release of the iP4 in Canada??

Simply put no

Apple will release a fix for nearly all of the existing problems. The antenna might not be fixed but who knows (besides Apple)

/SIGH! :(

Looks like another day will roll on by without any news. The iPhone 4 training thing that Rogers is telling employees is a good sign though.

Here's a question for my fellow Canadians in this thread...

When I make the trip to the Apple store to pickup my new iPhone 4 (whenever that is...) and I purchase the phone, will Apple be able to swap me from my current phone (Rogers iPhone 3G) to the new iPhone 4?

I'm just wondering how it will work on release day? If I buy the iPhone 4, how do I swap my current sim/plan/number to a MICRO Sim and pop it in my new iPhone 4 on the same day?

That's a good question Sdao. Guys correct me if I'm wrong but, wouldn't Apple have to send you out of the store without a micro sim considering they have no network to put it on? I think you would pay for the phone at retail price then have to go to Rogers or whatever company you use to get the micro sim.

Apple Retail stores have the ability to do anything and everything like new activations, hardware upgrades and phone activations.

They have the abilities just like Best Buy, Future Shop, and Wireless Wave.

Doesnt matter the carrier. If they are official carriers Apple Retail Store can set it up

That's exactly what I was thinking. Since I am due for an upgrade and debating whether or not I should buy the iPhone 4 unlocked straight from Apple at full price (most likely $749 + tax) or as a HUP (most likely $299 from Rogers) what's the point in fussing with Apple? (Aside from the unlocked part obviously?).

I mean, if I have to pre-order w/Apple, yet I can't walk out of the Apple store with a iPhone 4 working on the Rogers network (assuming they can't activate a micro sim for me) is it really worth all the fuss? I might as well go directly to Rogers and get everything done at once?

If going to Apple first means I'll have to make a trip to the Rogers store for them to swap me on to a micro sim, I'm wondering what the wait for a micro sim swap is going to be like on launch day!

It's not the strongest indicator since there really isn't physical hands-on training at the moment, but it's the same pattern as the 3G release (training, about two weeks before release).

I'm fairly certain they will have (at least) Rogers' Micro SIMS available to them to give to customers purchasing iPhone 4's/3GS's from them directly. While they may not be able to port information, you would just have to call and get your line switched to the new Micro SIM.

Just what I wanted to hear. That's perfect.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a few Rogers insiders as members on MR? They could keep us in the loop... for such a hyped up product, the lack of information regarding the Canadian release is worrisome.
