Going through Rogers to take advantage of my 2 year HUP. I can't justify the additional cost for the few times of the year when I'm out of the country and would realistically use the unlocked ability. I'll wait for the software unlock if need be.

white is launching on that day too!!!!!

Mostly due to the process of elimination, although I suppose "End of July" could mean a few days in the last week of July. It could also mean it leaves their facilities in Shenzhen on the 30th, making it available to customers in the first week of August. Apple loves the ambiguous statements on availability.

So how many of you guys will buy it outright apple store?

If given the option and there's white iPhone 4's available than this is what I plan on doing. It was rather annoying how quickly they passed over the announcement today, they could have at least waited until the end and discussed it a bit. I'm doubtful we'll get a chance to pre-order and even more doubtful we'll be getting the white iPhone 4 any time soon. That said upgrading through Rogers is my last resort, as I said before I'd rather pay outright than deal with another launch with Rogers in-store.

I most likely am. But only because I am a Roger employee, and probably like last year, they will restrict iPhone purchases to actual customers and employees have to wait a month or so.

That and I don't really want to renew my family plan. I'm selling my 3GS for $450, so buying a new one outright will probably be just like buying one at the upgrade price.

So JULY 30th is the day!

Was happy to hear that there will be no delays.
I would really prefer the WHITE one. Let's see if there will be a white 32GB available that day.... (I really hope so).

My "friend" at the local best buy will hold one for me. Ahh I wish best buy had more employees like him! Such a nice guy!

Anyone else just get a notification on their phone that a carrier setting update was available? I'm sure it doesn't mean anything but it's a bit odd to have two in one month isn't it?

I was speaking to Rogers today and asked if there is any difference in their return policy these days with the iphone. I was advised that it is still 15 days or 30 minutes, whichever comes first. This makes me extremely nervous as I would hate to use the phone for something like 1 hour of talk time and decide that in my area it did not work well. A pity we do not get the 30 days that iphone buyers in the US get,

I might just go with a new 3GS (I have the 3G now).

A lot of people are saying they've been told that there will be no pre-orders through carriers or carrier-locked phones. Hopefully we find something out soon if we can pre-order the simfree devices from Apple.

Hopefully we hear something this weekend or Monday regarding pre-orders.... (or sometime next week)

Quick question.

I have a 3G with Rogers and will be eligible for the 24 month upgrade to the iP4. Now what are the benefits of buying straight through the Apple Store? I want to give my current 3G to my mother and simply move over my account to the iP4. Any thoughts on what's my best option?

Cheers!

If you purchase your iPhone 4 through Apple, it will be factory unlocked to any carrier. If you are staying with Rogers, just by it through Rogers because it's cheaper.

The benefits are basically that you don't have to resign a new contract and that you can get an unlocked phone, meaning you are not locked to a carrier, which is especally convenient if you travel internationally.

Or did you mean the benefits of doing an upgrade (so still renewing your term) but at the Apple store?

Ok, so if I jump on Rogers' upgrade scheme, I am locked with them for 3 more years and will NOT have an unlocked iP4. Makes sense!

Now, once I do upgrade, will my 3G be unlocked for use with another SIM card?

Thanks for your replies! Helps a lot!

Rogers will not unlock your iPhone 3G when your contract ends or if you upgrade. It will be locked to their network until such point they decide (if ever) to allow iPhone's to be unlocked. Speaking of Rogers, apparently they have not even told their stores about the date, let alone details of the launch. Reminds me of last year when I had a Rogers rep insist up and down that there was no such thing as a 3GS and there was only a software update coming out. This was after Rogers has put the splash page for the 3GS up...The lack of communication between departments in Rogers has always been extremely frustrating.

No prob. As Skott said, your 3G will not be unlocked. The only way to unlock it (unless Rogers ever decides to provide unlock codes, but that looks highly unlikely) would be to jailbreak and unlock it (I have no idea how to do that but others on here obviously do if you decide to go that route). You can use it with another Rogers SIM card, you just can't use it with another carrier.

essential accessories

Hi all,

I am planning to get an unlocked 1 p 4. What are the essential accessories I should be buying?

There isn't much accessories really... The car is where you find most of the accessories.
But if you are just taking it on the go then a case would be the most popular accessory, there are hundreds on the market so spend a few hours and decide.
You 'should' get yourself a good screen protector. Eventhough Apple has stated how great the screen is it doesn't hurt to get a good screen protector like Zagg Invisible Shield.
If you want your iPhone to stand up when charging then a dock, but nothing is wrong with it laying down and plugging the cables in.

Oh and if you don't like the iPod style earbuds then buy your own =)

You guys who have been using the iPhone for a while now, can you recommend some apps? So far I only have WeatherEye, Twitter (which I use for school, believe it or not), Yelp, IMDB and Epicurious.

Rogers My Account... or Fido My Account
iTranslate... so I can learn to speak Francais :p
RogersRadio... yup Rogers/Fido customers only
680News... a must if your in the Toronto area (Rogers/Fido only)

Yellowpages... amazing app for finding stores, way better than Google Local Search
Starbucks, TimmyMe, McDonald's... Because you always need one
TD, CIBC, Scotiabank, ING Direct... if you bank with either of them grab their app.

If you still have basic cable and don't have a tv listings then:
What's On from Napkin Studio... AMAZING using Zap2it.com tv listings also has movie theatre listings and show times for pretty much all the movie theatres (at least all of them in the Toronto area). Or even if you have digital cable and want to check what is on TV when you are on the go it is great.

There are tons of other apps but I listed some specific ones which I find handy and somewhat Canadian and all the ones listed are free :p
