for me i'll be waiting a bit longer than everyone else i guess. i'll be calling in on the 30th. i'll order my 32gb white with help from my fido dollars and wait for it in the mail.

Start the call by telling the rep you were thinking of canceling you contract as you got a better offer from ____(Bell, telus, wind etc.)
They will ask what kind of offer- here you tell them what you want and for how much.

The typical rep won't be able to do any thing, so they will transfer you to the cancelation/retentions department so they can try and get something that works for you, and so they can keep you as a customer.

I went through this the other day (with Fido), I told them I want to upgrade to the iPhone 4 when it comes out so they just gave me the offer and I just call back the day of/day before of the when I go get the iPhone and they will switch my plan over.

I ended up getting:
200 minutes
Evenings and weekends starting at 5pm
2500 text messages
Caller ID
Voicemail
6gb of data (don't think you can get this any more as I had this from the iPhone 3G launch)
All for 55 dollars (or was it 50? dont remember).. No system access fee or 911 fees.

For what you want, you should be able to get it for around 30-35 dollars. I remember there being a retentions plan with 200min+5pm evenings and weekends+1gb data for really cheap.

Just make sure you come off like you are willing to cancel. All the major carriers will be gettings the iPhone 4 and they know this.

IF after your call you can't get something you are happy with just tell them you will think about it. Then call back and start over.

In my situation I'm only into my 3GS contract one year....I pay around $98 a month for my plan.

I want a much cheaper plan but worry that if I call retentions before the iPhone comes out they will deem me unable to early upgrade based on the fact my plan is no longer in the $100 range.

This is what I have and pay for currently....

$30 - 150 day minutes plus double your minutes and an extra 50 mins for a total of 350 day time

$9 - for early evening calling starting at 5 P.M.

$2 - Name display

$20 - iPhone value pack (call display, who called, visual voice mail, unlimited text & picture messaging)

$30 - data package 6GB

Plus I get a $5 credit every month.....

what a downright ugly plan. I hate Robbers, you really need to know how to deal/negotiate with them. Your situation is different since you need to upgrade to the new phone only in one year, else i would call them up and get it wayyyyy down.

btw last year i was eligible to upgrade from my 3G to 3GS and i was paying ~$47, granted it would've cost me $450

What's your fido plan? I haven't decided which carrier I want to go with, but I'm looking at the basic plans around $50. (On fido's website it says that the $65 and the $80 aren't the only plans available for the iPhone.)

If anyone else has other advice for getting me in around that $50 mark, it would be appreciated! Right now I'm trying to decide between Rogers and Telus.

Ahhh, i'm out of a phone till the 30th i guess.

My old phone crapped out and the iPhone doesn't come out till the 30th. What a pain! What am I to do for 2 weeks?!?!

Hopefully the white one will launch at the same time as the black one here. And There will be a decent amount of stock!

i have the $65 iphone plan right now but i'm going to upgrade to 1gb and adjust my phone plan with the $25 phone plan. something like that. haven't decided quite yet. probably end up $10 cheaper.

Wow you can prob cut that down quite a bit. How long have you been with Rogers?
Your best bet to call is when your contact is set to expire and you want to renew.... Mid-way wilk be harder to change

Stop giving Rogers so much money :p

while true, its not always the same case. I had to sign a 3 year contract last year, and i got a new better deal a month ago. If you know how to negotiate, you can get a lot from them. it never hurts to try. call to cancel, make sure you get into retentions and then try what you can. If you get a really good person, you can get a awesome deal. I told them that i probably wont cancel casue it will cost me $400 but i feel im not appreciated and blah blah blah, also told them wind will pay me $200 to switch but i still want to be with rogers :p
just say the right stuff and you can get a lot better deal

Hey Draz, I've been with Rogers for 4 to 5 years now, but resigned my 3 year contract in June 2009 when the 3GS came out.

Do you think it's wise to call retentions before the iPhone 4 comes out...if they lower my plan cost I won't be in the $100 a month range and might not qualify for the early upgrade price, although my billing cycle is on the 25th of every month so I might get lucky there.

Will they do anything for someone who has 2 years left on their contract or will they know I'm just toying with them and blowing smoke? lol

The best plans are the ones you can get through retentions.

I called Fido a couple of weeks ago because my contract was up, and told them I was unhappy with what I was paying and had thought about switching to Wind. After a bit of negotiation this is what I was offered:

200 minutes
Unlim. evenings/weekends
Fido to Fido/Fido to Rogers calling
Caller ID/VMail/2500 texts
$25

Flex data (since I'll be going back to school and my campus has wifi, I don't need lots of data) $10/100mb, $15/150mb, $20/500mb

Total: $35-$45/mo depending on data usage-I was paying $45-50 a month without data before, so I'm very happy.

I need to call them back now that the iPhone has been announced to make sure I still have this on my account. I just told them to put a note saying I would call back when the iPhone is announced and have it activated.

I lucked out and have a corporate day off on July 30th, so I'll probably go line up early if I can't preorder. I really don't care if I get it on the first day or not-if I can call in and have it shipped to me I'd rather do that than line up just to get it on day 1.

Where are you guys planning on lining up? The "official" stores or places like Best Buy, Futureshop, etc. I'm wondering what's my best bet-I'm leaning towards Futureshop because my boyfriend is with Rogers and we could line up together that way. But if stock is going to be limited there I don't want to bother.

I plan on waiting in line at a Rogers store in Hamilton, likely eastgate square mall. The doors to the mall open at 7 so I'll bring my coffee and paper and relax for a couple hours. :)

For those students out there Virgin Mobile has a good student plan :

50$/month
-Unlimited Nationwide talk and text to 10 buddies
-500mb Data
-Unlimited evenings and weekend (beginning at 6h or 7h i think)
-200 anytime minutes

65$/month
-Unlimited Nationwide talk and text to 10 buddies
-1GB Data
-Unlimited evenings and weekend (beginning at 6h or 7h i think)
-250 anytime minutes

If you're like me and doesn't use your phone that much and always call the same 5-6 people than it's a pretty good plan. And for Data well I have Wi-Fi at home so I don't think i would really use more than 500mb on the go.

Haha I've been waiting to pre-order this damn phone for months now! Too bad it's a July 30th release because I was hoping to have it before my San Fran roadtrip next week. I suppose I will have a nice little present waiting for me when I get back from the trip! :D

I pay too much for my plan based on my use.

$45
1000 anytime
free eve/wknd @6pm
R2R calling
my5 Canada wide
vm/call display/who called etc
unlim text messages
$30 6GB data

plus taxes comes out to 87 and change...plus whatever other nonsense I end up wasting extra money on like mms...I will change my plan when I get my iPhone 4...maybe...just add the new iphone pack with mms or something

hmmm, never thought about rogers at eastgate. I wonder what time these stores will open at for launch. Maybe i'll be there waiting in eastgate with my coffee as well :)

I wonder if anyone has called Apple Canada and asked about pre-orders for the iPhone 4? I have to say I was expecting at least some form of information today. Rather annoyed.

I'm on the phone w/Apple right now. Got a hold of a representative at 1-800-MY-APPLE. I asked "Is there going to be a pre-order for the iPhone 4 in Canada?" I was put on hold so the representative could find an answer for me.

Will post the answer when I get it...

UPDATE: It seems as if the Apple rep didn't know anything about the pre-order. Her answer was "At this moment, we do not have any information regarding a Canadian pre-order, however I would advise you to keep checking Apple.com for any further information as it becomes available."

She was definitely not a Canadian Apple rep. Does anyone have a phone number for Canadian iPhone sales? I'll gladly call and prod them for information...

I couldn't find a Canada-specific Apple Store number when searching. next best bet:

(416) 646-8489 - the Apple Retail Store in Sherway Mall in Toronto. They might know?

It's doubtful they would know unless they've been briefed by Apple. Apple Store employees tend to get weird when you ask them about upcoming products, especially things like the iPhone and iPad. I know it's a sign of annoyance as you're the 50,000 person in the last hour to ask them but that's the harsh reality of retail :) I was curious to hear what an Apple rep would say over the phone, sometimes they might have access to something that's going around, or even "accidentally" let something slip.

1-800-263-3394, that's a Canadian phone number for Apple. I'm fairly sure it's support but there maybe a general inquires line. I'm a bit bogged down at the moment or I would call myself. Either way, chances are you may get switched around and end up talking to a U.S rep anyway. I think I've only truly ended up with Canadian support once, the other times were incredibly helpful US employees desperately trying to figure out how to navigate their way around US product to get to the Canadian stuff (i.e; iPhone replacements...)

Yeah, pretty annoying that the launch is 11 days away and we don't have any real information yet besides a date.

Last year's 3GS was available to pre-order 12 days before launch. The 4 was 10 days before launch. ... we really have nothing but that to compare it to, except the iPad launch in Canada, where we DID get to preorder on May 10th and it was launched May 28th.

All theses shenenigans is really just making me want to line up at the store on launch day. Seems it would be the easiest route now. (And remember the iPad FedEx launch day shipping delay?)

Great point about retail workers :) They're probably asked those questions many times an hour!

Yeah, pretty annoying that the launch is 11 days away and we don't have any real information yet besides a date.

Indeed, as sad and pathetic as it may be I'm in the midst of trying to line up vacation time and it's delaying things a bit. It's the one thing I'll "geek out" about each year and I'm not ashamed to admit I'll schedule things around for the launch. It's odd that aside from Bell, none of the carriers have updated their splash pages for the iPhone 4 and Apple hasn't said a word about anything. I wonder what would happen if they announced a U.S launch and didn't say squat about additional details about pricing, carriers, etc. My biggest complaint about Apple and their products is their insane secrecy, when the 3G launched here employees at Rogers wouldn't even say which ones they had even as we were being walked into the store. During the iPad 3G launch in Buffalo, they wouldn't say how many they had or even if they had enough of certain units for those lined up. I don't get the point of that, unless it's some far fetched bait and switch thing going on (oh, sorry we don't have that one, but we do have....you've waited this long you might as well leave with something, etc...). I highly doubt it but it's still frustrating!

I will be strategically booking time off work for this as well.

Does a pre-order make it so we'd get it on launch day - in a timely manner (somewhere from 9am-2pm on launch day)?
