I will be strategically booking time off work for this as well.

Does a pre-order make it so we'd get it on launch day - in a timely manner (somewhere from 9am-2pm on launch day)?

No official word on how preorders work or if we will have any so we speculate:
-Pre-orders could mean that you ordered your phone and you get it courier to your home on launch day
-pre-orders could mean placing your name on a list and you have a good chance for a phone on launch day. It would depend on how many the store gets and their list

But until we get official word then we can only speculate.
What is for sure is that one way or another the iPhone 4 will arrive in Canada on July 30th :D

I just called Apple Canada tech support and the rep said the carriers will be doing pre-orders for a spot on launch day. I have to imagine she was speculating on that... doesn't make sense for them to do that because they never have.

Well put draz. Do you think it would be a good idea to line up at a Rogers Plus store the morning of launch day? They should have enough stock for a few hundred people..

I wouldnt count on any Rogers stores getting anywhere close to 100 unless it is a very very busy location somewhere in downtown Toronto. But I too am speculating...

I would guestimate 50 would be the max. But if you want one get there early.

I think iPhone is very different from iPad for regular consumers.
With iPad, you just open the box and use (of course after activate it in iTunes), but iPhone need carrier activation also.
So my guess is iPhone 4 will have no pre-order from Apple. I certainly hope this is not true.
We already have AT&T locked IP4 in production test, and badly need more for testing purpose, I also called Apple twice with different numbers and got 0 infomation...

Depending on how you read Apple's website, it certainly appears that they will be offering a sim-free iPhone 4. When you go the Apple Store online and click "iPhone" you are shown both the 8GB 3GS and iPhone 4 (with "Coming Soon"), the wording on the website states "Your iPhone direct From Apple...", thus, while ambiguous, leads to the assumption that "iPhone" is being used as a term to represent both the 3GS and 4. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure they would have stated "Your iPhone 3GS...". Thus, the iPhone 4 purchased through Apple would work the same way as the iPad (i.e; no pre-installed micro SIM, activation on the carrier of your choice). While this is by no means a sign of whether or not we will have the chance to pre-order, it negates having to go through a specific carrier at the time of purchase.

I went to a Virgin Mobile store this weekend and ask the employee if they were going to take pre-orders and she answered me that she didn't have word on what they'll do yet and since they don't now how much they would have(she guessed they will be getting a lot) she can't take pre-orders. Still she told me that if I go back in a week and she have more information about quantities and stock she wouldn't mind reserving one. I don't know if it will stand but that's still nice to hear. I might be the only one with Virgin Mobile here but if they do so maybe other carriers will be doing the same.

For last years launch, the small Rogers Plus near me got about 30ish phones with an even mix of 16/32 and about 70/30 black/white. There were about 18 people in the lineup when the store opened.

The demand for the iPhone 4 in the USA was 10x that of the 3GS, so maybe this year there will be 180 people in the line.

Interesting - thanks for the info. Where do you live? I am in London and in there are 4 Rogers Plus locations here. I'm going to pick the one farthest away from the city core.

I went to my local Rogers Plus and was first in line, I went at around 3:30 pm. Walked out with a 32GB 3GS.

I'm pretty sure he means he just walked in the day of. What I noticed is that the iPhone usually takes a few days to sell out in Canada. Dunno how well the iPhone 4 will sell maybe it will sell out first day. I hope they do pre-orders on the apple website because I really don't want to have to go to the apple store in case there is a line.

Sounds like a relaxing 3GS launch last year!
I am betting there will be lineups for most of the Apple stores in the GTA, especially with Toronto's population density versus # of iPhone buyers.

hmmm, never thought about rogers at eastgate. I wonder what time these stores will open at for launch. Maybe i'll be there waiting in eastgate with my coffee as well :)

Last year they opened a half hour earlier, that being at 9:30am instead of 10:00am

I bet they'll even open up at 9:00 this year seeing how crazy it was last year there. ( I got my 3GS there)

LOL no. I drove up to Rogers Plus on launch day at around 3:30pm, walked inside, went to the wireless kiosk thing in the store and bought one. I was the only one in line when I went.

can you buy just the phone or are you forced to get a contract on spot with them

i.e buy the phone for its retail apple price for like $799 or buy it for $199 on a 3 year contract only

because you are at a Rogers store

Not 100% sure, but I think you can buy it for retail price aka no-contract, but it will still be locked to Rogers. If you are going to do that, might as well buy it from Apple and get it unlocked.

Yeah then I might as well buy from Apple like your saying.
It's just there are two Apple stores I can get to in my area
& there both in malls so how the hell do you wait in line?
Like wait outside the mall till you can get in?

I've never waited in line for a store inside a mall before. So I can't really help, but I figure you would have to wait until the mall opens.

Interesting. Was it busy for the 3GS launch last year?

This is true. If you get it from a carrier at whatever price ($199 or $799) it will remain locked to that carrier. So if you really wanted to pay full price just get it from Apple Store as it will be the same price and unlocked....

Vancouver Apple stores

Can anyone tell me how far apart the Oakridge Centre and Pacific Centre Apple stores are? I've never been to Vancouver and I may be passing thru there on the 31st July 2010.

Has anone been to these stores for the 3GS launch? If yes, what was the crowd/wait like?

so i just got off the phone with rogers and the rep said that allthough i am hardware upgrade eligible i might not be able to do that because rogers dosent offer that for all devices

Not far if you take the canada line train from Oakridge. maybe 10 minutes tops. If you drive, it might take 15 depending on traffic.
