I see it on the link above, the banner on the iphone page says "coming soon". Although it might be worth mentioning that some of the site is down for maintenance until tomorrow morning...Either way, August 2nd? People seem to be forgetting that August 2nd is a civic holiday....don't think any launches will starting that day ;)

What if they release it a week later like August 6th?

Then that would be stupid as they would get complaints and people cancelling their Rogers service.

July 30th Rogers... make it happen with pre-orders too.

Rogers will not have pre-order and neither will teh otehr Canadian carriers.
And as for people cancelling their Rogers service - why would they do that? If there is delay it would proabably be because of Apple. If Rogers has the phones, they'll sell them.

You can change your plan with the rep on the phone and then walk in store and get the Hardware Upgrade.

I prefer talking with a rep because the store folks I find are just pushy and sell you the standard plans. If you recommit over the phone you get more incentives and freebies thrown your way.

Also remember that if you do not have a data plan you MUST get at least a $25 data plan in order to get the subsidized pricing. If you do not get a data plan you will have to pay full price. However the good thing is that if you get a data plan you can pay the $100 cancellation fee and you can continue to use your voice only plan and the iPhone without a data plan. The total cost of going this way is still cheaper than paying full price.

Good luck!

Well if your not on contract with Rogers anymore you can give retentions a call and threaten to leave because your getting a better offer somewhere else. They may be able to work something out with you if you re-sign with them. Then just use your upgrade on an iPhone either through them (probably take up to 5 days to receive) or in store.

To give you an idea, I was able to get a nice deal out of them this past June..

200 wkdy
Unl. eve/wknds after 6pm
rogers to rogers/fido/rogers home phone
Unl. incoming
1GB data
2500 txt
CD/VM

for $59.41 tax in.

And fully eligible for advertised price of the iPhone plus a $35 admin fee.

Thanks for the info from both of you! What would be the chances of getting one the day of launch if I call on launch day for upgrade, then head to the store?

On a scale of 1-10... I would say a 1 or 2

You have a better chance of getting one outside of a big city if you arrive well after the store opens. If you are stuck in a big city like Toronto... yea come back the following week when they get more lol

I've been doing some reading in various forums, and there seems to be a debate as to whether you can get a truly unlocked iPhone from an Apple retail store. Apparently, a retail store iPhone 4 (or even 8GB 3GS) even at the no-commitment price is only "unlocked" until you activate it, and then it will lock itself to that carrier.

There seems to be very limited information out there, since the iPhone 4 is only available unlocked in a handful of countries, but some people in the UK were told by an Apple Support rep that the permanently unlocked iPhone's are only available from the Apple Online Store.

I live in the US and was planning to drive up to Toronto to buy an unlocked iPhone 4 from an Apple retail store, but I don't want to end up with an iPhone that's going to be locked to AT&T anyway after I activate it.

That would make sense if they want to limit the unlocked phones to certain countries as best they can.
Otherwise, there is no point whatsoever to sell a phone for full retail that will be locked to a carrier as soon as it's activated. I mean, nobody would buy it then.

That makes no sense to me. Why would the Apple store sell you a full priced iPhone 4, only to have it lock on you when you put the sim card in. That defeats the whole purpose of advertising that you can change carriers at any time - as it says on the Apple website.
All full priced iPhone 4's sold at the Apple Store will be unlocked.
The only ones that will be locked will be those that are purchased through the subsidized pricing or those purchased at a wireless outlet.

I agree that it doesn't make much sense. I confirmed with the Fairview store earlier today that they have one supply of phones, and they are locked to a particular carrier when a customer chooses that carrier. I'm not sure if the locking process is the regular activation process or if the stores have a different procedure to lock the phone to the proper carrier.

I know you can't believe everything you read, but this is where I came across it:

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11811981#11811981

"Called Apple support and after much discussion got to speak to a supervisor. It seems the Apple Online Store phones are unlocked and can be used on any carrier worldwide and can be switched at a later date to any carrier. The Apple Store sold phones come unlocked and then LOCK THEMSELVES to the first carrier you activate the phone with"

Fido was updating their website last night as well (same time). I was going to print my online bill, and I was notified that yesterday will have a site maintenance. Hopefully today's maintenance will be the actual update for the iPhone 4. I'm pretty sure it is for the pre-orders. There has to be pre-orders  Either way, pricing/ availability :p

I think the key there is "activate with". When you buy the iPhone with the subsidized pricing, you will have to set it up in-store. During this process they will lock the phone to the carrier.
I know some Canadians who got their phones from people who bought them at the Apple Stores in the UK and they are unlocked. They do not lock to the carrier once you put a SIM card in. So I'm certain it will be the same in Canada.
if you're paying full price whether it's at the Apple Store, or Apple Store Online - you're getting a factory unlocked phone that you can switch sims of any carrier as many times as you want.

Now yes - the website does say this ... "It works with the carrier of your choice. Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store and choose your own GSM carrier. You can change carriers at any time."

So I can see some people getting jumpy and see the buy it from Apple Online and it's factory unlocked (says the same on the UK website) - but as I mentioned. I know people who have the phone already in Canada who had people buy it for them at Apple Stores in the UK, and the phones are factory unlocked. They have not locked to the carrier.

In the UK we had a choice of buying a phone subsidised on contract. On PAYG (Pay as you go) which although not subsidised often has a few slight perks. Or unlocked and sim free. With the sim free one we had a chance of requesting a microsim which would be included with the order, but it would still remain unlocked. When I got my unlocked phone I used it on PAYG for a few weeks, but then opted to change to a rolling 1 month notice contract. But it is still unlocked and I can use it on any network if I don't like the one I am with. I think the UK was lucky in this respect. I believe in the US they can only be sold tied into a contract. Which is a pain if you take it abroad. I am not sure what will happen in Canada.

My suggestion is not to rush. Even if you ask an apple store rep whether the phone will be unlocked or not. From my experience, most of the iPhones sold in store usually come prepared to be locked to the first SIM's carrier inserted. Either you wait for official written announcement, or you just buy it through their online store.

I also remember once I replaced my iPhone 3G in Rideau's apple store, and the genius guy brought a refurbished iPhone in white box with no SIM card in it. I asked him why there's no fido SIM card (my phone locked to fido), and he said that since they have more than two carries to serve, apple make their phones (new or refurbished) ready to be locked once a SIM card inserted (even if it's not on apple's authorized carries list) so they save time and increase productivity in having non-locked phones for this purpose.

I hope apple will ask carries to offer unlock service instead of leaving the phone locked forever to that specific carrier.

Good luck,

im pretty sure apple will make the phone that they sell in store commitment free as well. They only made them activated to rogers/fido/telus/bell with previous versions were because they werent unlocked and had to be committed to a specific carrier.

since this is factory unlocked they wont be able to do that (that is of course if they plan on selling factory unlocked in store, and common sense says they will, hopefully :p

here more info on the unlocked phones and how they will work with any GSM carrier and will not be locked to one if you put its sim in it

Just wondering if anyone in the thread has actually seen an iPhone 4 close up and had the chance to fool around with it yet??

Since it's inching ever closer to the 30th I think it's about time to put my 3GS up on kijiji.ca

I tested the waters before and had offers of the $450 - $500 range....so we'll see.

Anyone want a 3gs?? lol

I'll put my 3G on kijiji too. Checked it out this morning and a jailbreak 16g 3g goes for 250-300$. The only problem for me is not having a phone for a week! :D

I think you will all be given a choice whether to purchase the iP4 from retail Apple Stores either totally unlocked or at a subsidised price... those that are subsidised (tied to a contract of some type) are activated instore while-u-wait and the locking process takes place at that moment. As you can imagine, it only adds a few seconds to the overall process -which I warn you, if it follows the UK model for launch day then prepare to wait a loooooooong time for your shiny new phone -the lineups move really slow because every customer is having the iPhone activated to suit their needs -network, subsidised or unlocked etc.

Also, if it helps anyone then I brought my unlocked iP4 here to Toronto with me and have successfully cut down both fido and Rogers Pay As You Go sim cards for use in the iP4 -both worked immediately and neither had any 'locking' effects on my phone, although like I said they are only Prepaid sims.
