Call your carrier and complain your bill is too high. They can throw it in free if you have been with them for several years.

as posted on "iphoneincanada", rogers and fido stores have begun to receive their allotments of iPhone 4 micro sim cards.

edit: above poster beat me by seconds!

I got a question for you guys, anyone here with Fido? A rep told me this a few minutes ago when I asked him if I could get the iPhone 4 at the lower price (I'm 2 years in my contract and I got a retention deal for both my data and voice plan).

You cannot buy the phone instore since your plan is under 25$ a month without data. We made exceptions for customers who have a voice plan under 25$ , that they can combine a data plan and be eligible for a phone at agreement price but it can only be done by phone. If you try to do it instore the system will validate that you do not qualify.

Is this true? I pay 17$ for voice and I was considering waiting in front of a Fido store next week but now I'm not so sure. Did you any of you got a 3GS last year with a voice plan lower than 25$?

Thanks!

they wouldn't sell you the 3gs last year at launch (at rogers) if your voice plan was lower than $35 per month if I recall.

Last I checked in order to receive full subsidy on the iPhone 3G/3GS you had to have a voice and data plan that was $50 or more. I have no idea how that works in terms of getting a device without the subsidy though.

Just $50? I thought it was $100?

Yet another reason why the unlocked iPhone that Apple is selling at full price is so tempting to many. You can pay monthly and decide what options you want and don't want.

Anyone else a bit puzzled by the wording from the internal memo posted by the iPhone in Canada blog? Most this part...

"Please be sure to order your micro SIMs today to ensure they are in store by June 24 for any early adopters who purchased their iPhones in the US and want to use the device on our network"

How does that work? I find it hard to believe Rogers/Fido would send out a memo like that considering the device is locked to AT&T when purchased in the U.S. Did I miss something or am I reading this wrong? Also it's a little strange that the memo was sent out on the 23rd of June telling stores to order their micro SIMs for the June 24th launch in the U.S. Isn't that a bit late?

I think Rogers just wanted to be prepared for an influx of potentially unlocked iPhone 4's coming in from other countries, specifically from our neighbours to the south.

I thought US was the only or one of some countries not getting unlocked.
Shouldn't it read off some of the countries who received unlocked units?

It is locked in the U.S, as far as we know. I just find it odd that Rogers/Fido attempting to be accommodating to those purchasing the iPhone 4 elsewhere. Definitely an unusual move on their part.

Considering they're well over a month past say, the UK release date, they just may realize they're powerless to prevent it.

That said, this line on the iPhoneInCanada post may explain why the Dual Format MicroSIM I got for free can't be activated on my 3G:
While many Rogers locations already have microSIM cards for the iPad, those SIM cards are “preactivated” and cannot be used with the iPhone 4.

Going to stop by the store to return a game so I'll be checking into this.

There is no such thing as a factory unlocked iPhone 4 originating from the U.S. (As AT&T currently has carrier exclusivity...)

However, it would be foolish of Rogers to not account for the almost immediate release of unlock software for the iPhone 4. Meaning... they (Rogers) actually had the foresight to have micro SIM's in stock for those of us who would travel to the U.S. to purchase the phone and unlock it for use on the Rogers network.

Hmm, that seems a bit odd to me. Let us know what their answer is... when you get one.

I thought so too but it makes sense to me when on 2 call transfers and 2 calls where they tell me the card is already in use.

I don't know much about the activation process for iPhone but iPad is a self activation process.

I'll let you know. Just trying to save myself some time the day of.

I just logged onto Rogers.com and signed in with my user name. I went to the 'overview' section and selected 'upgrade to iphone'. Usually it takes you to a screen where it will only say, 'you may be eligible to upgrade to iPhone, check your local Rogers dealer for details'. This morning this option no longer works and it just refreshes the overview section.

Like I said could be nothing, but I thought I'd share anyways.

Try it out if you have an account and report back....

And for some reason it appears they have also shut down their Redboard so no one else can leave or reply to comments on the blog. hmmmm??

Yep same here.

I don't understand why Rogers or for that matter the other cellular companies can't release some information on plans, buying options and HUP. They've known about the iPhone 4 since January there is absolutely no excuse for leaving consumers in the dark. Makes me sooo mad

Chances are it's Apple that's keeping the information and not the carriers. I'm fairly sure there are things in place that would prevent the carriers from divulging information before Apple is ready for them to do so.

OMG. I just found out that I'm not going to be home on the 30th. I'VE WAITED TOO LONG FOR THIS! Does anyone know if I could buy a phone in a different part of Ontario and activate it with a number for a different area code?

For now, if you buy an iPhone outright, it should be able to activate with any SIM card and phone number.

I know thaaat. I'm going to be in Thunder Bay (no Apple store) but I was thinking about buying it with Rogers and signing a 3 year contract. Do you think they could give me a different area code than the area I'm buying it in?

That was a big waste of time. At least my game's returned.

Like every Rogers employee I've talk to so far:
"Don't know anything. It could happen tomorrow and we wouldn't even know ahead of time." (Tomorrow you say?)

I saw the memo that you guys should have them (Micro SIMs).
"I have nothing to give out."

It was worth a shot.

Anyone need an iPad 3G Micro SIM?

Why would they release it weeks ahead? Keep everyone waiting is way better marketing tool than letting everyone know your plans weeks in advance.

If they were to release it in advanced then other carriers will come along and release their own 'better' plan. It keeps everyone on forums and blogs speculating and keeps the chatter going on what the carriers will offer, look at this thread for example....

While we don't like it... it is a good thing to keep the vibe up.
