Torontonian here and I can say I want 1ounce of what yer smoking! I'll never be depressed in my entire life again. To be honest Leaf's suck! new stadium still nothing. Sundin took 1 million less his 3rd year as captian (I think I don't follow hockey) and STILL they couldn't make it to the finals. Face it they suck, you love the team, you keep on hoping - if marriages that were on the rocks had that much faith marriage lawyers would have to goto school for another career. We both love this city; but Leafs suck. Ppl that don't even watch a hockey game for years nor even know any name of a player still on the team know that the Leaf's suck.
Your blanket statements are pretty inaccurate.
I follow the Leafs on a daily basis, from hockey blogs to major sporting sites and everything in between... they all say one thing; the Maple Leafs are 'rebuilding' the team without relying solely on the draft. Going the draft route would require putting together a string of last place finishes - this is something that Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment is not willing to put up with. There is a ton of extra revenue generated for your franchise when you make the playoffs! So, Brian Burke, the leafs GM, has been assigned to that task - bring the Toronto Maple Leafs back to playoff contention.
The team itself is now the youngest in the league. We traded for Phil Kessel (in what was a VERY controversial deal). Traded for J.S. Giguere. Traded for Dion Phaneuf. Picked up Colby Armstrong (the new Darcy Tucker). Picked up Kris Versteeg of the Cup winning Blackhawks. Drafted Nazem Kadrim, a young dangler who will undoubtedly play this year. Bolstered our defense with Beauchemin and Komisarek, and even got the best goalie outside of the NHL in Jonas Gustavsson.
Let's also not forget that Kaberle should be traded within the next couple of weeks for a forward to pair up with Kessel.
Be prepared to see a better Leafs team this year. While I agree that they are still not a great team, the potential is there. Young players are finally getting their chances. Grit and toughness are oozing from this lineup. We have some skill in net and on defense.
It's really easy for people in Toronto to say "Leafs suck!". But those are usually people who don't know anything about the future of this team.
