Ok thanks.
Just to confirm, as I don't live in Canada, the tax in Vancouver is 13%? (7%+6%)

Do you plan in buying an iPhone 4 in Canada at launch? Can an unlocked iPhone work in the US? By that I mean can you use any micro sim card from any carrier like in Canada?

I am seriously considering buying it at launch. An unlocked iphone can work with multiple carriers once the carrier uses the same frequency the iphone supports. That is once the carrier uses one or more of these frequencies: 850mhz, 900mhz, 1900mhz, 2100 mhz

Someone on iPhone Canada is saying that he called Bell and got their prices for the iPhone (Obviously take this with a massive grain of salt):

16GB
  • 3 Year Contract: $159.99
  • Unsubsidized: $699

32GB
  • 3 Year Contract: $269.99
  • Unsubsidized: $799

Don't shoot the messenger ;)

Virgin Mobile just sent me a newsletter and they have a section in it for the iPhone 4. I was excited when I saw that until I found out it only said : iPhone 4 : Coming Soon! Duh....I'm starting to think that they won't have it on the 30th.

I'll be doing the same. And yes, an unlocked phone is an unlocked phone. You can use it with any GSM carrier.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (iPhone; Opera Mini/5.0.019802/19.872; U; en) Presto/2.5.25)

It is real and we will get it on the 30th. Don't panic...

I read this comment on an article on iPhoneinCanada:

It's crazy that we don't have more info on the iPhone 4 launch yet! I called Telus this morning and they said that e-mail would be going out to those who registered in the next 24 hours. Hopefully that holds true!

*Credit goes to Jarndt08 who made the comment

If this is true hopefully Rogers follows suit.

Almost 7 days left. IT'S LIKE CHRISTMAS MORNING! omg but this time we will be like Santa and we'll be buying the presents. Or is Steve Jobs more like Santa in this case? Phil Schiller is like the Elf commander?

*almost =)
Wind and Mobilicity and even T-Mobile are GSM carriers but have that AWS frequency of 1700mhz which the iPhone doesn't support (except T-Mobile's 2G service)

Since the 3GS is $550, I've heard people hoping for $650 and $750 but you can always count on Rogers trying to screw us for an extra $50 so I wouldn't be surprised with $699 and $799.

Hi, I am soon moving to Canada for at least 2 years... (Toronto, although I might move around)
What phone company would be recommended? which is reliable, good price or service?.. do all canadian phone companies use sim cards?
should i get an unlocked iphone? do you have the option for unlimited data? tether? can you use skype on your iphones?
can you or will you be able to use facetime with someone in the US?
These are some of the questions.. thank you so much

Coverage varies by province. But in Toronto it doesn't matter all the carriers have great coverage.

do all canadian phone companies use sim cards?
The ones that have GSM phones yes.

should i get an unlocked iphone?
Most likely yes

do you have the option for unlimited data?
No 500mb is the norm but we have higher data plans for more price

All companies have tethering included. Rogers has it only if it is 1gb or higher plan.

can you or will you be able to use facetime with someone in the US?
Yes

Other things to note...:
-Bell and Telus operate their own CDMA 1x EvDO network same like Verizon
-Rogers is GSM only like AT&T

-Bell and Telus also have a 3G only UMTS network which they share.
-Rogers also has a 3G UMTS network but also operates a 2G Edge/Gprs network just like AT&T

Those are the 3 big companies, each of them has their own 'discount' brand. We also have some new carriers who don't have that great of a coverage:
-Wind and Mobilicity, operate on the AWS frequency just like to T-Mobile.
-Public Mobile operates on CDMA.

They're all the same. They move lock-step with one another on pricing. For every 1 person you find swearing off Bell for life, you'll find one more for Telus and another for Rogers.

Bell (and its subsidiary Virgin), Telus, Rogers (and its subsidiary Fido) use sim cards. All 5 (really, it's more like 3) have the iPhone.

No unlimited data. If you're lucky you'll get the 6GB for $30 promotion on a 3-year data contract. Otherwise it's $30 for 1GB, tethering allowed (at least on Rogers).

You can use skype, but I think Skype recently started charging for3G voice calling (wifi still no extra charge I think).

1. I personally prefer Rogers but most rates for the major carriers carrying the iPhone here (Bell, Rogers, Fido, Telus, Virgin Mobile) should have there plans online so you can look around.

2. Most, yes. Bell and Telus recently switched to GSM from CDMA, I'm not sure what percentage of their phones (if any) are still on CDMA.

3. Unlocked is good if and when it's offered, depending on whether or not your willing to pay full price.

4. No unlimited data, Rogers has traditionally offered 6GB/$30 at iPhone launch which is fairly decent. Tethering is available, mines included in my data package for the rest of my term but I have no idea how it works on new subscriptions.

5. Skype via the app works great. 3GS and iPhone 4's can run it in the background as well. Facetime works internationally through Wifi.

7 days, 1 more week. This is crazy, as the day gets closer, it feels as if time is slowing down.

7 days...:apple:

It's ok the weekend is here, Monday will be here before you know it. Then just Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday =)

ALMOST THERE!

Yeah. This is getting intense, so close...:apple:

I've been having urges to buy an iPad recently...

Not sure if you saw this, I posted this earlier, but this is a comment on an article on iPhoneinCanada. Who knows if it's true, it came from a CSR so it's definitely up in the air still.

I have an att iphone, i think the jailbreak hasnt been released yet, so i won't be able to take it to canada and use it with one of your carriers. If i could (jb iphone) which one should i choose, (i know there are some differences betweens carriers bands, or one 3g is not the same as the other)
someone mentioned that carriers varies by region, if in a couple of months I go to Victoria, BC, will Rogers still work fine?
one more thing, how about the ipad? can i also get service from any of these carriers, is there a iphone and ipad promotion, unlimited on this one?

i've been getting that urge too. :p don't know why. must hold out for 2nd gen though.

You have 2 choices for 3G networks:
Rogers
or
Bell and Telus which share their 3G network.

The coverage varies but in BC, Bell and Telus tend to have a better coverage but Rogers will still give you a good signal within the big cities

For the iPad there is no unlimited however your data plans are somewhat better than the other smartphones:

Rogers and Bell offer:
$15 / 250mb to use in 30days
$35 / 5gb to use in 30 days

I'm hoping that this $35/5gb plan comes with the iPhone 4 launch.

Telus has:
$20 / 200mb with a cap of $50 / 5gb

We are still waiting on any special iPhone promotions this year. As in previous years we had a 6gb/$30 plan but many are hoping that this plan comes out. If not then we can settle for the 5gb/$35 plan.
