The 50$+Phone subsidy cancellation is only for Quebec as they enacted new consumer protection laws.

You are correct... this might be the first time we actually come out on TOP in Quebec... I'm really liking this new law... if I had my own phone and signing for a new 3 year contract, it would only cost me $50 to cancel it... its a very sweet deal.

So what would this really mean to me in Ontario?

Its 20$/month up to 200$ total to cancel your contract.

And i think data on its own is also up to 200$ to cancel..

Honestly just get the phone for 200$ and get a 3 year contract. Your gonna be better off at the end. Buddy is returning his phone so its gonna cost him 500$ but then what? Hes gotta get a plan to use the phone on unless he wants to look at it say "Activate in Itunes"

Head over to a corporate location. Fido is owned by Rogers... same third-party thing going on. The corporate locations are (IMO) less likely to do this / not allowed to.

You can buy it without a contract at Fido.. shouldn't be a problem.

Edit : iphone in canada notes that Fido is possibly all commissioned reps. unless I read his post wrong. dunno. oh well.

Just got off the phone with Fido. I'm not sure he understood what I was saying about them saying they would refuse to sell the phone for me. He said I basically had two options:

1. Buy the phone at full price (what they people in store said they'd refuse to do (no commission)

2. Cancel my current agreement and pay the ETF ($400+tax (I asked about the other $100 for data, he said since it is a combined plan it doesn't apply) then sign for another three years (I'm only a year in now), and get the phone at subsidized price, minus my current fido dollars, plus I'd get to keep my current plan, which is cheaper than the ones offered now.

This sound fair?

Also, any chance at a retention plan on this if I say I'm thinking about switching carriers?

Hey, I live in Quebec too. So is it only 50$ to cancel a contract or 50$ + additional fees??!

thanks

only if you've signed a new contract pas June 1st 2010... and it's 50$ + any $$$ given in subsidized phones.

For those who read french:
http://www.opc.gouv.qc.ca/webforms/...nnements/Telecommunications/Introduction.aspx

There are 2 cases for cancellation:

1) If there was a rebate (400$ rebate on a phone), you only pay the part on the phone as the resiliation fee based on the number of month left.

2) If there was no rebate, you pay 50$ OR 10% of the services left in the contract, but not more than 50$.

But this only applies in Quebec. I love this new law! :D

And do you know how is the coverage in quebec? Because I'm still undecided about what compagny to choose. I'm getting a new contract.

thx

I would say it depends the region.. I hear Bell / Telus are really good in rural areas... In Montreal however, stay way from Bell / Telus. Their HSPA network is way to thinned out. I'm with Bell and I can honestly say that my phone has no to very little service 60% of the time. For Montreal go with Rogers or Fido.

I am. I`ll be going to Market Mall Apple Store in the morning to pick up an unsubidized unit. You going to go before opening? Never hurt's to chat to people! :)

Hey, I was planning on getting the subsidized unit from Rogers. I don't know what Rogers I should go to since people are saying Rogers Plus is where I should go. Is Rogers Plus the one where you can rent videos/games? Seems pretty weird going there, so I thought I would go to those Rogers stores that have nothing but phones, but supposedly those are third party stores:confused:

I'm confused, too. What's a corporate store and what's a dealer? Is a dealer like Wirelesswave, Future shop, etc? Is corporate the one with no name other than "Rogers"? Or is only Rogers Plus the "corporate store"?

I think it's been doing this for a bit now? I recall reading a post like this a few days ago.

My Rogers has been acting all sorts of weird lately so you could be right :)

My Rogers rarely works properly, although one of these days when it does go wonky it will be for a reason. Now that I'm most likely going with Rogers to get the iPhone 4 (will wait for white to buy from Apple) I'm getting a bit impatient that none of the carriers have started to announce anything.

So with any luck, on the 30th I will be calling Rogers in the morning to add a data plan, then immediately head to Rogers Plus to see if there's still stock. If not, the same mall has Best Buy, so I guess I'll try there.

Can anyone give me any tips on how to get the best deal with the Rogers' rep on the phone? It's my very first data plan, so I'm not exactly sure what's good and what's not.

Oh, also, my sister is pretty much in the same situation as me, looking for a HUP from a dumbphone. Am I able to upgrade her plan with the Rogers rep as well or does she have to do that herself? She's working that day so I'd hope I could get her plan upgrade and iPhone as well.

EDIT: I'm checking the Rogers Plus store locator, when I search for locations that have "Wireless Phones and Accessories", I keep getting the message "We're sorry but no stores in that area carry the products/services you selected." How's that possible?

Anyone remember what time the Apple online store switched to allow people to either pre-order or buy the phones in the US? Trying to figure out what time to get up on the friday for my online purchase.
