So with any luck, on the 30th I will be calling Rogers in the morning to add a data plan, then immediately head to Rogers Plus to see if there's still stock. If not, the same mall has Best Buy, so I guess I'll try there.
Why not do this before hand? Like today =)

Can anyone give me any tips on how to get the best deal with the Rogers' rep on the phone? It's my very first data plan, so I'm not exactly sure what's good and what's not.
There isn't really much to ask for... "Hi I want to add a 500mb data plan" rep says "ok" and they add it for you in a few mins. The harder part comes if you want to get a 'deal' and change your plan (retentions)

Oh, also, my sister is pretty much in the same situation as me, looking for a HUP from a dumbphone. Am I able to upgrade her plan with the Rogers rep as well or does she have to do that herself? She's working that day so I'd hope I could get her plan upgrade and iPhone as well.
You have to be an Authorized User Level 1 on her account to be able to upgrade her phone, and even if you are this type of access many stores do not allow anyone aside from the primary owner to get an upgrade. If she adds you to her account then make sure you call your Rogers store and ask them specifically "I am an Authorized User Level 1, am I allowed to get upgrades at your store?" The Wireless reps know what this is and will tell you yes or no. I find that the 'bigger' stores allow Authorized users to perform upgrades but the smaller ones and retailers like Best Buy and Future Shop only allow the primary person to upgrade.

EDIT: I'm checking the Rogers Plus store locator, when I search for locations that have "Wireless Phones and Accessories", I keep getting the message "We're sorry but no stores in that area carry the products/services you selected." How's that possible?
Not sure... Postal Code entered? or City and Province?

Anyone remember what time the Apple online store switched to allow people to either pre-order or buy the phones in the US? Trying to figure out what time to get up on the friday for my online purchase.

It was about 9 days before so we're already passed that. :(

Edit: Oops, misread the question. draz is right.

Bah, I keep thinking that I have to upgrade at the day of launch! lol

Alrighty, I'll try that tomorrow.

We are under the same account, all of our numbers are separate contracts though. Does that mean I'm already Level 1?

Not sure... Postal Code entered? or City and Province?

Yep, I tried my postal code. Nothing. Tried Markham, nothing. Scarborough, nothing. Richmond Hill, nothing. Even Toronto, nothing. Rogers' online stuff don't work very well. :(

Anyone not planning on lining up for hours?
Plan on just ordering online only?

For me, I can't take the time off work for it.

I'm at the cottage, so I have to order online. I hope the Rogers website doesn't crash! It barely works properly even on a good day.

Call, tell the rep her number. Give them your name, if everything goes well then explain to the rep that you want to get a hardware upgrade done for her in store and want to make sure it is possible.

If they say yes you can do it then ask again if you are an Authorized User Level 1, that basically means you can do everything on the account but cancel it. If they say yes then that's all you need to know. Also who's name shows up on the bill?

You're in Toronto... I know for a fact 2 stores allow Authorized users to upgrade:
Bloor & Jarvis
Bay & Adelaide

But you might find a few more that do =)
And hopefully closer to where you live so you don't have to travel all the way downtown!

Also the Rogers store locator works fine for me. Do you have any addons like Noscript blocking anything on Rogers.com?

*edit*

You can change your plan anytime it doesn't effect your ability to get an upgrade. It might make sense to get it the day of as you start enjoying the data that day. But you can get some breather room and also be well prepared if you do everything you can before hand. But I must warn you that if you do get a data plan and do NOT get an iPhone 4 because they are out of stock then the reps can't 'delay' the charges on your plan, you can cancel it but it is a hefty charge ($100).
If you do plan on getting up early and getting the iPhone then go ahead and add it early if you have doubts on when you can get it then don't and do it in store when you get the iPhone 4 if adding a data plan is all you are doing.

Didn't see a Rogers Plus in Markham, but there is one in Scarborough:

300 Borough Drive, Scarborough Town Centre, Unit 49
Scarborough, ON M1P 4P5 Phone: (416) 296-9160

There are plenty of authorized retailers as well in the area. Didn't find a Rogers Plus in Richmond Hill but again, plenty of authorized retailers who carry the iPhone (namely, Uptown Communications).

There's a Rogers Plus and a Rogers authorized retailer in the same parking lot; with that said the Plus is a better shot, yes?

"I'm just going to get some coffee...don't look at the clock..." *backs out the door slowly*

LOL. The most important thing is being accountable for your time.

Really though, if I don't get to the Rogers' Centre during work, it'd be a last ditch effort to get one near home after work.

I have no plans to wait outside for hours before a store opens.

Seems like not all Rogers Pluses will have it on launch day. I called 3 in Winnipeg, and it seems like the main "receiving" store (Polo Park) last year was the only one that had it on launch day. The others had it a few days later. I guess they send all the iPhones to the one store and then they dispatch them out to the individual stores.

May well be different in Toronto though, since Winnipeg is much smaller.

I think I'm just gonna call and get it, though, if Rogers allows phone orders for iPhone 4 as one of the rumours suggested they would. It only takes 2 days after ordering to arrive (so probably Tuesday August 3, if it's released on 30th) and I don't mind waiting if it saves me some hassle.

Yea nearly all the stores in Toronto would have it... how much they get is another question.

However, I don't think the stores would know how much they are getting or any at all until a few days before. The best bet is to call the store the day before and see, if you ask the right questions you should figure out if they got any iPhone's or not

Hi, I am soon moving to Canada for at least 2 years... (Toronto, although I might move around)
What phone company would be recommended? which is reliable, good price or service?.. do all canadian phone companies use sim cards?
should i get an unlocked iphone? do you have the option for unlimited data? tether? can you use skype on your iphones?
can you or will you be able to use facetime with someone in the US?
These are some of the questions.. thank you so much

ALL THE CANADIAN Providers offer SIM cards now.
Albiet clarity.
If you're from the USA ... Think of Telus/Bell Mobility as a combined Verizon Wireless: their core network is CDMA. That said They've also upgraded to include WCDMA or true 3G HSPA network for SIM card compatible phones. They Do NOT offer GPRS/EDGE so if you're phones doesn't support 3G no luck. IF you're phone does support 3G/GPRS/EDGE you'll ONLY get 3G so turn off 2G support on your phone.

Virgin Mobile Canada piggybacks on Telus/Bell (not sure which but roaming is enabled on either/or). They offered CDMA based on this initially but 3G is now also supported based on being an MNVO type network in Canada.

More clarity:
3G has 4 bands (WCDMA) here just like the USA.
Rogers Wireless, Telus Mobility, Bell Mobility (and the Virgin MNVO) have 850Mhz and 1900Mhz. Rogers supports the 850Mhz/1900Mhz bands mostly throughout Canada but is opening up one/other more so but 3G phone work regardless; so no worries.
WIND mobile, MobileCity, and a much smaller one just debuted Dave? support the WCDMA AWS bands: 1700Mhz/2100mhz just like T-Mobile USA does - so hardware bought from them is stuck on GPRS/EDGE for the larger providers like Telus/Bell/Rogers. This AWS bands here is kinda stupid since the last auction really didn't deplete our existing spectrum until much late in the race since Rogers & Telus went ballistic.

LOL, it’s a good thing I wasn’t drinking water, or I would have spit it out all over the screen! :D:D That is too funny!!

While you are absolutely correct, I will always hope and cheer (mainly because I could never cheer for a different team!). :)

P.S. I occasionally sniff :apple:, lol
:p

btw, glad you took that well. My buddy goes ballistic when I talk bad about the Leaf's .. he's a 2nd generation lifeblood fan. Actually this city wouldn't exist financially if it wasn't for the Leaf's since NHL began; up till the late 80's. I like that we have an NHL team, really I do, but I worry if they don't win the Stanley soon somebody is going to move them ... if Balsillie had his way they'd be in Waterloo by now.

Your blanket statements are pretty inaccurate.

..edited but I did read it all...

Be prepared to see a better Leafs team this year. While I agree that they are still not a great team, the potential is there. Young players are finally getting their chances. Grit and toughness are oozing from this lineup. We have some skill in net and on defense.

^ Regardless of young players or old, non-skilled or not ... Leafs have NOT delivered a Stanley cup in what (again not googling here but I'll probably fair better with this out-my-ass-guestimate) 40years plus?! The "potential" has for the better part ALWAYS been there. Arguments like this or some 20yrs ago stating that the Garden's was cursed from the ghost of that all manager (something to do with a plaque in center ice at The Gardens; removed now?) whatever ... they NEED to deliver ... plain and simple, face it the team is squashed balls the have the worst loosing streak in failing to acquire the Stanley cup ever! Heck the NHL should just GIVE it to them out of pity. I'm not telling you to not love the team ... and I HOPE they do win - I won't be on the "band wagon" but I'll sell you crazy KingCans past 4am when you're partying all week though ;).

The Toronto Maple Leafs DO suck. But, not because of how they play hockey.

Look at the price of everything Leaf related at the ACC, from Tickets to $12 hot dogs, it's business and a cash cow for the unions who own it.

Winning a cup, building the best team is not the "Businesses" priority, those who think it is, Players included are ignorant to the facts.

Facts are FACTS. The Leafs survive on those facts are a microcosm; you couldn't expect a USA NHL team to loose as badly or not concur a Stanley in that length of time and STILL be in the same city could/would you?! Seriously?

HOW they play is the reason they have NOT won the Stanley. I went to 3 Leaf's games ... just 3 (late 80's till 2000). I cannot recall WHEN or specific game but I DO recall one team OWNING them ... Detroit I think. The team that was stacked with killer players. I watched all 5 players (goalie must've been picking up all the Leaf players wife's numbers during this), passing the puck around the net just below the blue line for almost 10 minutes!! I SWEAR it was like watching the Bulls own the Lakers in the late 90's when Jordan was in his prime. Ever watch basketball players pass the ball around the "key"?! This is what I was seeing on the ice pretty much. I swear I almost cried for the Leafs, because they didn't know what to do, and the visiting team was just toying with them, tiring them out, not one of their players had to move really just standing still passing the puck ... then finally BAM slap shot straight in ... nothing but ice+net.

This is the one of the stupidest posts. A simple google search shows Canada has 34 million population, not 36 to 70 million.

Originally I WAS going to post 34/36million but I was thinking it was OLD data and didn't Google. But my point STILL stands and holds much water! We're nowhere CLOSE to saturation yet, so growth is HUGE potentially here.

Alright, so here is my story. Can anyone help?

So I have had my iPhone 3G for about 21 months. I have NO DATA PLAN. My monthly bill is around 50$ with Rogers. Will I be able to get the iPhone 4 for the $200 from Rogers on launch day?

My dad is telling me I have to wait 24 months (Sept/Oct) before upgrade, but I don't know how people upgrade iPhones every year if that's the case.

Also, will I need to add a data plan if I want the iPhone 4? I do want one, but would there be a problem if I want to add the data plan at the time of the purchase? I don't wanna get a data plan now, as I heard rumors about a special data deal for the iPhone 4.

Thanks to whoever can help!

Back on Topic.

Bell & Telus have gone official 1 day early now for Rogers. Wondering which will have the largest stock for HUPs?!

Personally I'm going to Yorkdale unlocked is the way to go.

Ok everyone, you can all stop talking about your teams owning... we all know the Canucks are taking Stanley home this year!

What may be interesting to note is in the UK where Apple also sells sim free (unlocked) units they do not do carrier hup's and activations in store.

I do believe it will be the same in canada where apple will only do unsubsidized units in the apple stores, and leave the carriers to the rest.

Never know though, i just don't see apple doing activations and hups for 5 carriers ( rogers, bell, telus, fido, virgin).

Hopefully we find out soon!
