The CANADIAN iPhone thread.....

Hey there...I'm new here but wanted to share a story I have about my wireless headaches with Rogers.

So I've been with Rogers for 4 years now...been month-to-month for over a year now. Last year before the Iphone3gs came out I was promised this great plan and the phone for $199. Then it came out and they wouldnt honour anything I was told before and wanted to charge me $350 for a hardware upgrade saying that was a deal...and oh I'd have to sign a new contract too.

So 2 weeks ago I got fed up and just said I want the friggin Iphone...so I called and threatened to leave and this is what they said I would get per month $60 included:

Rogers to rogers calling
evenings after 5pm
weekends free
voicemail, call display...that special call display that shows people who arent in your contacts already
unlimited text
350 minutes
1gb of data
unlimited social networking

and oh the iphone 3gs would be $199...I was fine with that.

then the day my phone was to be delivered i heard about iphone 4 and sent back the 3gs...and now i've kept this new plan with data which i cant use on my non-smart phone that i currently have. I got the bill yesterday...voicemail is only free for the first month, no unlimited text...actually no text at all! and no special call display...so my question is...is this a good deal and should i keep paying till i get my iphone 4 or say forget it with rogers and buy the phone outright with apple and go to who ever...and do you think i could get just as good a plan somewhere else or even with rogers when the phone actually comes out?

thanks!

I wanted to tell you one more thing but forgot originally....When you call back Rogers and are working out your deal...ask them for Rogers 2 Rogers and also Rogers 2 Fido and Rogers 2 Rogers landline....I have all that, and believe me it helps save your day minutes a lot! Good luck!

Good morning my Canadian friends (I love having a little forum for us on this site)

Are you all going to jump right into 4.0 as soon as iTunes lets you...or are you going to hang back for a little while and see what happens. Either because you're JB or unlocked or for any other reason?

can't wait to try out 4.0, but the 3GS i'm using needs to be unlocked, so i'll be waiting a bit.

Typical Typical Robbers. They never ****ing get the credits right and the first month bill is full of surprsises. Thats why when you negotiate a new contract, you should clearly ask 100 times how many credits there are, and for how long the credits will be. Call back, threaten to cancel and talk to retentions, then tell them that they are giving you wrong information and fooling you. Talk about how ridiculously bad you are being treated and that you have to spend so much time calling rogers again and again. Tell them that i can get better deals outside of rogers and talk about the palm pre $30 deal Bell has. you really have to sound like you know what others are offering and are willing to go elsewhere. And tell them that you are being pushed into a 3 year contract that you didnt sign up for and dont be scored to talk to the managers, you will get a better deal out of them, even more so then the retentions people.

and no thats not a good deal if you have to no text, name display, and only one month free voicemail.
Be firm when you call, dont budge and if possible try to get some more credits.

Remember they can apply as many feature credits they want and monthly credits depend on how much your base plan is for. So $25 base plan can have upto $25 monthly credits, not that you will get it but thats what you can get upto

so yea good luck. Your original plan is very decent, try to get some more credits if you can (for the headache they are giving you) if not, then try to get credits applied by calling after a few months or so. That plan would be awesome if you can get it around $45-50 with tax in and have unlimited incoming added on

let us know how it goes

and P.S. rogers, telus, fido all dropped the 3GS prices to $99, $150 already

I'm about to blow up right now....urghh I just got off the phone with Rogers they said they see notes of bell saying they would give me unlimited text messaging but it was never put on my plan and no visual voicemail and name display...if i want that its another $10...so for $10 they have to do all this work to find the original guy who promised all this to me and have him call me..etc etc...in the end i asked to be put on the epp plan for now until the iphone comes out because i dont have a smart phone and this is all very ridiculous not getting what i was promised...so for $34 including tax i'm getting call display, voice mail, 2500 text messages, evenings and weekends after 6.

I feel like just buying the phone from apple when it comes out and not giving a contract to any of these slimy companies.

Great idea, I hope more people go this route and force the cell phone companies to actually have some sort of competition since they are losing revenue on the hardware

How does everyone have such a good plan?

I'm with Telus, and I pay 56 a month including tax, and i get

100 anytime minutes
500mb data
6pm evenings and weekends
Unlimited text
Caller ID
Visual Voicemale 3

I doubt I'm elegable for an upgrade, considering I bought the Phone in December. I'd really like the iPhone 4 though.

I have a friend who is willing to buy my phone+plan for $400.00 cash (I know, right!?) but my only concern is that I spoke with Telus, and they said they wouldn't be able to match this plan for a new account, because new accounts can't negotiate plans. I'd have the same plan, except for my Caller ID, but I'm not sure I'm willing to give that up.

I also spoke to Rogers, and they said to match the plan I have now, it would be $72.00 a month.

Do you think calling telus and telling them I'm planning on cancelling to go to rogers would make them give me an early upgrade?

Still need an answer. :p

When you call ask about cancelling your service due to you feeling you do not have a good plan and you can get better elsewhere (they should send you to retentions). You need to be close to the end of your contract (or they know the ETF is going to be higher and you are likely bluffing), they will offer you something better. Be firm but try not too demanding, and make sure you have done some research with other carriers before calling.

My guess is you could work more minutes, some kind of long distance, or maybe unlimited calling to 5 callers or whatever it is.

Until we hear something from Telus and the others regarding early upgrades we can pretty much speculate..

Going by their standard HUP, there is no way you would be able to get the iPhone 4 for at a discount. And even if they did offer you a discount it won't be much.

Forcing Telus to give a better rate when you have only been with them for a few months won't work. They have barely made any money from you and might of even lost some money so they would prob be glad to see you go.

If you have been with the big 3 for several years now then they would easily give you things... I've been with Rogers for 10 years now and they gave me a ton of free things for me a few months ago when I changed to a better plan.

So whatever you get and if it is slightly better than the 'regular' plans, just stick with it is my answer....

In my case I still have another 2 years left from my 3 year term...what would you consider being "close to the end of your term"??

Would you say 1/2 way through....or a year left...or 6 mths left??

I have a decent plan, but I'd like to get a better one.

For all the people who just signed a term all you have to do is catch one of the many mistakes and extra charges phone companies put on your bill, and they will give you massive credits for it.

I have a $5.00 credit every month now for the past year and it lasts until my 3 years are up...Although I can't remember why they gave that to me, I must have had something good to hold over them for it! hahaha :D

So any rumours as to a Canadian release date yet?

Hoping for an update sometime this week, possibly Thursday which is the official launch day in the first five countries.

To summarize, all we have to date is the following info:

  • SJ announces Canada will receive iPhone phone in July (WWDC keynote)
  • Apple Canada's website states iPhone 4 "coming soon"
  • Fido CS advised me "possibly first week of July" (but who knows...)
  • People are speculating that the Canadian release may be delayed due to higher than expected demand (but who knows...)

OMG if it did come out in early July I'd be the happiest guy in Ontario!!

Now that the unlock is out for the baseband at least it will raise the cost of selling my 3gs to someone.

Needless to say I'm super excited to have the new iPhone 4 in the (hopeful) near future!

Jealous canadian here...lol urghh hate having to read that people have already received their phones in the states...why are they keeping canada in the dark...its cruelty!

I heard rumblings today that the iPhone 4 might be in store at Aliant on the 24th. They may have missread the e-mail though but I was at the store and the guy told me directly that they were also getting it on the 24th of june.

At around the 2yr mark you will be eligible for a hardware upgrade. You can always give them a call and they will be able to tell you. If you are a 'good customer' meaning you pay your bills ontime then chances are that you will be eligible a few months early.

If you get a new plan that does not effect the ability to upgrade to a new phone even if you commit again to another 3yrs. With hardware upgrades you are eligible to get one every 2yrs with Rogers.

Thought this was worth mentioning:

The iPhone 4 is due to be released June 24 in the United States and by the end of July in Canada.

This is from an article on Yahoo! news about the iPhone 4 being sold unlocked in Canada.

I'd say this is old news. June 15th was the day the pre orders went on sale. So news of AT&T being sold out didn't even happen likely by the time that article was written.

What do you all think?

I think we'll be luck if it hits at the end of July....if it does come then, I bet there will be only a couple thousand units.

I'm thinking mid-August. Although I'd give my left nut to be wrong about that! lol

I think they'll have an official launch at the end of July, then a couple weeks of chronic sold-out-ness.

I don't want to go crazy and hustle for a 4 (wait in line, go in super early, etc etc), and instead patiently wait for general availability - but man, I'm really starting to jones for one.

SHHHHH! You're jinxing it! *crosses fingers again for early July*
