Do I have to extend my contract to 5 years then, does it restart my 3 year or does it just play out my 2 year?

Hopefully you are not with Fido.. if you are I feel sorry for you and your silly contracts. Other carriers will simply restart it the day you made the upgrade. Fido stacks in on top of your existing one... Is that a 5yr contract I smell?

@DeusInvictus7

question since I'm not planning to get the upgrade through Fido but instead to transfer my number to Rogers...do I call Rogers to transfer my phone or can I just walk in Apple/Rogers to get it set up? I mean fido is great but they stack contracts.....

wow so I'm screwed then... i refuse to extend to 5 years

i guess the only option is to buy an unlocked one then?
does anyone know how much it costs to buy out the remainder of my years then?

$25 100 minutes plan
6GB data plan
iPhone value pack

Someone told me it's roughly $20 a month of the remainder of the contract
I might just do that if it's cheaper and switch to Bell or something?

You can walk into a Rogers/Apple (I assume Apple will have full Sales Central access so they should be able to port numbers as well) and have it done. Are you still in contract with Fido? Because if you are, then porting a number to a different carrier effectively cancels your contract and you have to pay the cancellation fees and such.

coool thanks...and yea I still have 5 more months left till my contract ends
so I guess $100ECF plus the phone...making it $399
that's not so bad I guess since I was with rogers before and don't plan on switching again

Expect to pay a good chunk of change...
Fido has a lengthy cancellation policy but it ranges from $200 to $400 depending on when you actually signed up for that plan. Data cancellation is either $100 or $200

They have done a few policy changes so that is why the numbers vary... Best bet to call Fido and complain about their contracts

ok simple question,

apple store sells unlocked iphone4's. If I do a HUP w/rogers at an apple store will the phone be locked or unlocked?

basically does apple store sell ANY locked Iphone4's?

What would be the difference between getting my phone at an Rogers store or Apple store? thanks

Cancellation will be around $125, since it's $20 a month for the voice half, and $5 a month if you have a data plan as well.

The ONLY time you get it unlocked is if you buy outright at full price at Apple. That's all. if you do anything that involves a carrier then it will be locked.

Doing a HUP at an Apple Store will result in a locked phone. The only thing that Apple store has that Rogers stores don't is that they can sell you it unlocked for the full price.

ok is there any way to get me a Fido Locked iPhone 4 without having to extend my contract? From what I hear most places that sell locked phones aren't selling them outright, so right now my guess is, no I can't and the only way to get an iPhone 4 on my current Fido plan is to go balls out and get a pure unlocked one from the Apple Store. Correct?

I actually complained today, that Rogers has a better contract, and they offered me a retention plan. Do you think complaining about their policy of stacking contracts will do anything? Will they like, un-stack me haha! 100% I will NEVER be with Fido after this. Screw this stacking thing!!

With Rogers, I can upgrade each new generation of iPhone without having to pay for the iPhone itself.. (resell the old iphone, to pay for the new iphone) bullsht of Fido

Well they might not give you the full price on launch day but the following days maybe, and you can always try another store. Call around first and ask.

But yea the only way to get it without extending your contract is to pay up the full price. Fido might be slightly cheaper than Apple, but with unlocked you know that you can switch carriers down the road and use it there.

I guess if I wanted to upgrade every year though, I'd have to have an expendable income to do so until my Fido contract runs out..

This is a lot more complicated than I hoped it to be this year..

Fido only made it rough for its iPhone customers a few weeks ago when all this came to light...

I want more info on pricing.
I can HUP on Rogers, but really want an unlocked phone. In Ontario its going to be around $750+/- and I am not sure if I want to pay that much. Guess I can, then return it and get a locked one if I don't feel the need for the unlocking. My iPhone is my travel phone so I guess it would be nice.
Decisions, decisions. Also, no idea when the mall will open to stand in line...

when i go to the apple store tomorrow to pick up my replacement 3gs i'm going to take the longest shot in the history of my life and ask if they will replace it with an iphone 4

wish me luck :apple:

Good luck. Warranty is like for like. Believe me, I've tried a couple times to "upgrade" my water damaged 3G. I'd be paying money and still wouldn't happen. If I'm not mistaken, they keep a stock of phones meant for replacements. Let me know what happens or what you learn.

Wont happen, they dont have any control over it. its like taking in a ford and asking for a trade up for a lambo, they just cant. They can bend rules with warranty, but this is breaking a rule. You cant even pay and "upgrade" price for an iPhone 4.

sorry :(

even getting one through a carrier at apple store = locked phone?

hm...how do they lock it? through the SIM when you insert it?

If I add the $25/500MB data plan to my line right now, am I able to change it to the potential $30/6GB when it comes out for Rogers? I want to add data now so that I'm set for Friday at Best Buy, but definitely want the better plan.

Probably you will be able. As long as you didn't sign a data plan contract, you will be able to change any options or features.
