Jobs and Murdoch have the same philosophy when it comes to their consumers..

The both like to control the medium and the message.

Yeah.... I said it :)

I'm confused, there is a two week trial so if you don't like it, you don't have purchase it. Quit the hating and move on to a forum that cares about your political opinion.

people should be glad to be in a country where free press exists (even if you disagree with some papers or opinions). Yes, I'm also no fan of FOX News, but at least I have the choice and can select news sources. Other countries dictate one single news source without the option for people to see the other opinions.

Well said and I agree completely.

hope the concept does good - seems like it saves paper/printing/mailing resources

Waiting for two weeks to see if its as fair and balanced as FoxNews.

If this proves to be a CNN / MSNBC clone, they can keep their money.

Looks Great and Works Well Also

After browsing the app for a while and viewing the photos, I have to say I'm impressed. As many others have noted, I'm also not a fan of FOX News, but this app/news looks to be pretty neutral for now. If they keep it up for the next two weeks, I'll have to finally use the iTunes cards I received for Christmas.:D

Nice but...

A buck a week is a very nice price.
To bad it´s the right wing loon Rupert Murdoch thats behind this....

I was really hoping that this app would be a newspaper/magazine platform instead of yet another app for a single news product. I still think Apple is missing the boat on this by relying on the news companies to make their own apps for everything. Where is the iNews app? This is the first news app that I've seen that actually looks to be well designed, yet I have no interest whatsoever in the content and content is what sells a news product. I'd pay for any number of news products to be delivered in an app like this. I think there is a real market here, but unfortunately we are stuck with a billion and a half crappy apps that show JPGs or PDFs of print products and a couple good apps like this that actually take advantage of the system which may or may not have the content you want.

how is it better than the free news on the internet?

The app has a special feature that makes it feel real:

While you are reading a gentle mist of printing ink through the loudspeaker grills gets onto your fingers when you turn each page.

Talk about real!

All the NewsCorp bashers are completely missing the point.

This is the first real news delivery application completely built for the tablet platform. Yes, there are other news apps but they all tend to be web rehashes. The media industry has been struggling for years to break out of the outdated print model, but their stubbornness and lack of a suitable replacement have hamstrung them.

This type of app has the very real possibility to finally give the media companies that next evolution of the printed news publication. The price point on The Daily is quite reasonable when compared to print and it offers a different experience above the now 15-year-old straight web page.

Whether you agree with NewsCorp, Murdoch or not, all should be hoping that The Daily at the very least ushers in a new era for media.

No international release is seriously weak. I've been looking forward to trying it too. Besides the fact that no localization is needed for English-speaking countries such as Canada, the UK and Australia, many people in Europe consume English media all day long, and are perfectly capable of reading a publication I'm English.

I think everyone besides America being excluded from this self-proclaimed digital renaissance is borderline offensive.

Patience, young grasshopper. From the crash reports, it seems the USA is the Alpha test site. The rest of the world will be added when it becomes Beta.

Not everyone who is bashing is missing the point. Maybe not anyone. You can understand how this affects the marketplace AND not agree with Murdoch's politics. I know that's crazy to consider... but it's accurate.

++ 99% of all the news apps out there are repackaged webpages (in which case in my opinion no app would be needed)

This looks like a very different approach. The next couple of days will show how usable (and different) it is, but for now it looks extremely good and refreshing compared to the repackaged webpages.

Now I just need to get myself an iPad! :D

The Future is now ... Save the trees!!!
No more printing of newspapers, magazines, books, or anything else for that matter....
All gone. Like antennas on top of roofs, replace by cables and satellites, Newspapers and most printed material is being replaced by the iPad Age.

Maybe not at this moment but, soon.

I am Locutus of Apple/Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward you will service us.

Exactly! Why does American companies always think we Europeans do not understand English? Just give me the same content in English and let me worry about the linguistic problems.

That is because American newspapers and magazines and news channels would be useless to anybody outside America. They are 90% focused on American news like the Tiger Woods scandal or Lindsay Lohan or OJ Simpson and you would go "OJ who??".

You would be surprised at how little major newspapers and news channels in America report on International news. Again probably because most Americans could care less what is happening outside America. You are better off with BBC.

How about something in between Faux News and CNN/MSNBC. I'd much rather get my news with minimum bias, nor do I want the news source attempting to manipulate my emotions about the news.

Give it to me like Walter Cronkite.

My 2 cents:

1) "Unbiased". No news is unbiased. Fox, NPR, MSNBC, CNN, etc. Intelligent people read the news, see the bias, and treat accordingly.
2) Rupert Murdoch. There's millions and millions of people that watch his news. Like him or hate him, that's a ton of potential users of the app, and tons more money for Apple.
3) International. I imagine there's some things going on behind the scenes that they haven't gotten figured out yet. Costs, royalties, ads, who knows.
