He's 55, the same age as Hartnell was when he took the role. Cripes.

As for the Valeyard, he's not an actual incarnation of the Doctor but instead was created from the darker parts of the Doctor's nature, from between his 'twelfth and final incarnation'. Note though that doesn't exclude the possibility of further incarnations after the twelfth, but it could tie in with what's going to happen in the Christmas special involving Matt Smith and John Hurt's Doctors.

**sighs**

The new doctor sounds great (Even though I haven't seen many things with him in it) but I kind of had a crush on the last one :(

Pretty good choice. I'm happy it wasn't a young Doctor again. Hopefully they replace the terrible Clara with someone like Sladen. I want someone who has same relationship that Sladen had with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. The closest we've had was Donna.

To be honest, I've hated watching Matt Smith, mainly because of the terrible writing by Moffat. I would have liked to see him leave too. But I guess you can't have everything.

So is this going to be the last Doctor? I thought there was a limit? Or is Capaldi going to be the second last Doctor?

What was wrong with Clara? I kind of liked her .

Well the only thing I like about her is she's hot. :D But I think she got a terrible character story to her and it's way too convoluted.

Another reason is that from the first to the tenth Doctor, the story line mostly revolved around the Doctor and I feel like when Moffat took the helm, they revolved more around the companions than the Doctor which I feel isn't what Doctor Who is about. It's why I didn't like the convoluted Amy Pond/Girl who waited/centurion story either. And I will admit, Russel T. Davis came up with some bad storylines too but it's nothing compared to what Moffat comes up with. Moffat's a good writer though, he wrote some cool story lines like the Library and the "are you my mummy" stories but I think he isn't as good when he's the head writer. I just couldn't care less about the damn Clara mystery and hope she goes away soon and is replaced by a older companion this time.

And for God's sake, I hope Moffat stops it with the boring "Doctor? Doctor Who?" bullcrap. Yes, I got it the last billion times someone said it. No need to repeat it for another billion times. Ugh!

I was hoping Hugh Laurie would get the job. Just as well I guess. Capaldi should do fine.

That would have been great huh? Then, his companion would be..wait for it...none other than Stephen Fry! It would have pretty much come full circle!

Oh man, Karen Gillan was so cute. Probably the cutest companion ever.
She also had excellent chemistry with Matt Smith, something Clara doesn't have in my opinion.

Totally agree with you there. Smith with Clara just feels forced where as Smith with Amy were a match made in heaven.

And now we have Clara with the 55 Year old replacement... is the Drs new outfit going to be a dirty trenchcoat and the plotlines all revolve about him hanging about late at night trying to get women to come and see his "sonic screwdriver" ?

Thumbs up for Capaldi. I don't know him from a bar of soap, but I'm incredibly excited... unlike last time round... and indeed, the last few years.

Of course they need to do a Valeyard story, and explain a way around the 12 regen limit. The Valeyard was at least nodded to in Name of the Doctor, so even more so now it's been written into NuWho, I'm hopeful we will see him return.

And if nothing else, ignoring the 12 limit denies some potentially interesting storylines, as the Doctor both faces his potentially everlasting death, but also no doubt a journey towards some kind of resolution to the limit... And the moral side of overcoming the limit, as it's something the Doctor has previously respected.

If I remember rightly, the idea behind that line was a tongue-in-cheek nod to fan debates over the regeneration limit – I don't think the Doctor was supposed to be in any way serious about it, it was a number just plucked out of the air.

Right back when the series was relaunched however, the BBC website had a little 'bluffer's guide' up for new fans detailing things they might not be aware of from the classic series. One of the Q&A points referred to the number of regenerations Timelords possess, and referenced that The Deadly Assassin established they could regenerate 12 times. It went on to add though (and I'm paraphrasing here) 'But now that his people are gone, who knows how many regenerations he possesses?'

My guess is that as we're likely to be looking back at the Time War and what went on with Hurt's Doctor during that conflict, we may learn that the Timelords suspended the limit or refreshed their regeneration cycles (something promised to the Master in the past, so there is precedent for it). It doesn't need a grand plot revelation or anything and would be a plausible enough explanation - after all, in a time of war Timelords would be dying and/or burning through regenerations at a far greater rate than normal and it would be a logical way to preserve their numbers.

Saw this earlier. just a normal day in Cardiff.

Missing Episode Recovery...

Several news sources are stating that anywhere from 2 to 100 episodes of Doctor Who have been recovered from Ethiopia, and they will be offered online (ie on iTunes) shortly. (106 episodes of B&W WHO remain missing from the archives, after a period of "junking" in the 70's before the home-video era changed the BBC's views on their value).

This follows a year long rumour of a find from Africa of "90" episodes - a fact the BBC actively attempted to quash in July by releasing a press release stating that nothing had been found.

The fact that one of the news sources is Radio Times, which itself helped launch an attempt to recover missing episodes earlier this year, certainly ads credence to the story. They have stated that 2 episodes will be offered online from 2 different (2nd Doctor?) stories... and that there will be a screening on Wednesday this week for the media...

I will be delighted if the above post is true! I only watched the second doctor's War Games episode and would love to watch more of his episodes. The second doctor is one of my favorites, after Pertwee, of course. :)

Whether it's 2 Troughton's, or 100 Hartnell's & Troughton's that have been found, it's potentially amazing news, considering only 4 or so episodes have been found over the past 10 years.

That said, Radio Times has now provided an update, stating that the Wednesday event is now pushed back to Friday... which sadly sounds very much like the stall tactics that many hoaxes of this nature follow... (Though let's hope it's genuine...)

Watabou - not sure from your post if you've only seen Toughton's The War Games, or just recently seen it... But - whilst there aren't many complete examples of Troughton to enjoy, I'd strongly suggest Tomb of the Cybermen, and The Mind Robber... Though you could buy The Ice Warriors, which was just recently released on DVD with its 2 missing episodes replaced by fairly good animations.

I buy all of these completed-by-animation releases (The Invasion, Reign of Terror, The Ice Warriors, and coming soon, The Tenth Planet, The Moonbase, and The Underwater Menace), because - assuming they didn't just find 95% of all missing episodes in Africa, I'd like to see other partial stories released with animation in place of the missing episodes... even potentially full stories like the pivotal Power of the Daleks... and hopefully by showing support for these DVDs by buying them, the BBC will get the message...

I have only seen War Games because the time I watched it, (about two years ago), all his episodes were either half restored or audio only. I really tried listening to just audio but it just isn't the same. :(

I now see that some of his episodes are available like the Mind Robbers and the Dominators. I definitely want to watch those.

Also, I'm not sure which episode the second Doctor meets the Brigadier because Brigadier mentions he met the Doctor before his third reincarnation. Maybe that episode is missing too. I'm going to try and find that episode and see if I can watch that.

Also where can do you actually go to buy these? Maybe I can buy a DVD of the second Doctor's available episodes? I didn't see anything by searching the BBC website.

Pat Troughton stared in 21 stories over 3 years (1966-69), or around 110 half hour episodes. Of those, only 6 stories are completely intact: The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Krotons, The Dominators, The Mind Robber, The Seeds of Death, The War Games. These, plus The Ice Warriors and The Invasion (both missing 2 episodes) were all released on VHS in the 80's/90's. Often these VHS releases featured little restoration work, and some in particular were rather poor quality. They are now all available on DVD with vastly improved picture and audio, plus lots of extras.

There are about 13 "orphaned" episodes from Troughton's era - episodes that don't make a full story. These episodes are all available on the special "Lost in Time" box set DVD (inc Hartnell's orphan episodes too). Subject to the possible news this week, Lost in Time is a great buy if you enjoy this era of Doctor Who, as whilst you may not get the full story, there are some great moments on these orphaned episodes.

Yes, listening to a Doctor Who story that only exists as audio is very difficult... I LOVE Doctor Who, have done all my life, but even I have only listened to a small handful of the audios... (Incidentally - they exist thanks to several fans who recorded the audio tracks by placing a cassette recorder next to their TV, because they had to go to work/etc, but didn't want to miss the show. It's amazing that we have this option, that has now allowed the BBC to create animations to go with the audio tracks for stories that are missing only 1-2 episodes, and release them on DVD.)

MR is a 10/10 for me... Dominators... 4/10... Still fun at times though.

Sadly, that first encounter between the Second Doctor and then Corporal Lethbridge-Stewart occurred late in The Web of Fear. Episode 1 of that story exists, but that is all... You can however watch The Invasion, which is the UNIT origin story, when Lethbridge-Stewart is re-introduced, now with the rank of Brigadier, and in charge of his own special team investigating alien invasions etc... The Invasion is missing 2 out of 8 of its episodes, but they have been brought back to life with the aforementioned animations with original soundtracks.

Some episodes are on iTunes... but other than that, they are certainly available in the US on DVD... Earlier (ie early 2000's) I think the DVDs took a while to reach the US, but now they are released within a few weeks of the UK release dates.

Amazon certainly has them... though - as a test I just tried finding "The Invasion", and Amazon want US$59! It's only AU$19 here in Australia...

Looking at other titles, The Invasion must be rare or something, as usually you're only looking at US$20.

(Yes, Doctor Who is not cheap to buy, compared to other franchises, though these days you should be able to pick up stories for around $10 on eBay etc... )

Thanks a lot for the post and Amazon links (but $59 for Invasion )!

I did watch the all the UNIT episodes. I believe after the second doctor, I have watched every episode until the episode that I'm on now (with the Fourth Doctor). Pertwee's episodes were of course easier to watch than the first two Doctors, mainly because of the color. I think there were still Pertwee episodes that I watched that were not fully in color but they were really enjoyable, especially the introduction of Roger Delgado, my favorite reincarnation of The Master.

I have to say, I really enjoyed all the UNIT episodes, with the Brigadier, Benton, Yates and others. It's really sad that only John Levene (he played Benton) is still alive today. Most of the Third Doctor's companions are no longer with us. :(

I liked how they announced the death of The Brigadier in the 10th Doctor's last episode. That was really well done, and of course, sad. He was one of my favorite characters since the Third Doctor.

Currently, I'm on the second last episode of the Fourth Doctor. I'm sort of leaving it for the last second, because I just don't want it to be over. Haha, it's worse than what I felt when the Third Doctor had to regenerate. I was literally depressed for a whole month (No Venusian Aikaido, lullabies, or brilliant sword fights with Roger Delgado! :(). I already had to get over the fact that I won't see Romana again.

A lot of Pertwee's stories had their colour prints destroyed at the time they were destroying the 1st & 2nd Doc's prints... Luckily over the years, many were recovered... and then those that were still missing have slowly been restored to colour using various techniques, such that now they are all in colour (on DVD).

Yes, only John Levine, Richard Franklin and Katy Manning survive... with the losses of Nic Courtney, Caroline John and the great Liz Sladen over recent years.

Currently, I'm on the second last episode of the Fourth Doctor. I'm sort of leaving it for the last second, because I just don't want it to be over. I think it's easy to understand why Tom's era is referred to as the Golden Age of Doctor Who... although my era is the 5th Doctor, luckily for me I was born in an era that saw regular re-runs of (colour) WHO, so I saw Pertwee and Baker as well as the later Doctors. It was just the 1st and 2nd Doctors that I only knew through stories like The Two/Three/Five Doctors that I knew these older eras, until VHS brought them back to life.

Aww yeah! Good news Doctor Who fans!

Recovered episodes will be released on iTunes tomorrow, October 11!

Tomorrow will be such a great day. Finally, I can watch some more episodes with Patrick Troughton. :D

Well aren't you the luckiest b@stard in the world... ;)

The Web of Fear, the Brigadier (Colonel)'s first story is now on iTunes, after being missing from the BBC's archives for decades...

I honestly don't care at this point who plays the Doctor, or if the companion is a hard boiled egg. I just want the show to come back. I'm having withdrawal.

I am actually looking forward to returning to a more mature body for the Doctor, even though the last two have been fun, and I thought Matt Smith was brill. (Never cared for Tenant.)
