How does backwards compatibility work from 3G down? Let's face it, 3G use will be limited for anyone who travels outside the best served areas (not to mention sucky coverage in hilly areas). Would it drop back to EDGE rates or not work at all (like it does now when EDGE is not available)? If it can drop back to EDGE, then a plus for the new model.

3G backs up to EDGE when 3G service is not available, so this is not an issue.

with the market as bad as it is and gas prices... apple no matter what has to have the 3g phone some what affordable. The price decrease when it first came out was embarrassing and a hassle I am sure. Plus apple still has that goal of ten million iphones so apple has no choice to make the phone reasonably priced if not the same amount.

First the market isn't that bad and Apple won't take that into account when pricing the iphone. It is seen as a luxury item and the people who want it will pay for it. Whether Apple prices it at $300 or as high as $600 it still won't be a mainstream phone.

And people who are worrying about gas prices get the free phone or the phone that costs $50 with a 2 year subscription rather than an iphone.

Yea I can't imagine Apple having both 2.5 and 3G phones on the market like that. I can see them selling off the 2.5G models to shift stock (especially in the UK where the iPhone isn't doing too great) once the 3G model is out.

But couldn't they try to move their remaining EDGE stock to some other non 3G country? After all, there's already a delay between the US and everywhere else.

I don't care what it'll cost, I'm buying it when it comes out.

Apple loves you. :D

FCC Approval?????????

How long does it take?

Surely more than 3 months.

Don't forget it will be made public Apple, 3G, and all to see.

It better be worth it.

Well that's my concern... I don't know about the rating plan are... for example.. the cheapest plan for iPhone is 59.99 a month with a slower Edge... but with 3G included and no slower Edge, they might charge more and I might be wrong. I hope! I do not want to pay extra if 3G is included and is faster than Edge.. see what I mean?

example but different reason: BD price was normal when HD-DVD was alive. But with HD-DVD dead, BD price went up. I assumed right now non-3G iPhone is 59.99 (cheapest plan) but with 3G will be like 69 or 79? Kind of like premium price?? I talk too much haha I tried to make a better sense as possible... thanks!

I purposely haven't renewed my committment with Tmobile. I'm using an imported HTC TyTN2 phone. Once the iphone has 3g and Exchange, I'm in.... UNLESS.... ATT screws it all up and just screws everyone over with some bizarro data plan or outrageous pricing.

What I want to know is if you will be able to shut off 3G and still keep EDGE active. From my past experiences with 3G phones, when they can't find a 3G signal they try and try and try until the battery goes dead. My last 3G phone (POS Treo) I was lucky to get 4 hours with it while it tried to find a non-existent 3G connection.

FCC documents can be set to confidential for the short term, so I don't think this is an issue.

Actually, in a recent article in Mac Bytes, they were saying that Steve had his iPhone developed, but knew that FCC approval was coming, so he scheduled his iPhone debut at MacWorld, 5 months ahead of actual release of the product.

No matter what, FCC applications are public to anyone.

There's been so much talk about the possibility of the "3G" iPhone...

I love Macrumors. I really do. There is no other site so devoted to an intelligent conversation about Apple and all the things affecting/affected by Apple. There are even entire threads devoted here to very interesting non-Apple issues, moderated by members who give a lot of their time, making this not only a topic-specific site, but a one-stop-shop for all things politics, religion, sports ... anything you can think of.

That said...

WE KNOW THERE WILL BE A 3G iPHONE. There is no "possiblity" of an iPhone. There is a CERTAINTY of an iPhone.

Yea, but if I recall Apple can request the FCC keep the papers secret for a little, until Apple can do their market thing.

And the reason Apple's release early plan worked, was because they had nothing to eat into the sales of...now a 3G iPhone would cut hard into EGDE iPhone sales

3g

My Verizon contract ended last week. woo hoo!

I was looking at iPhones at my local Apple Store (had a bunch on display). Apple employee asked if I needed help. I said nope, and told him that I'm waiting for a 3G iPhone. He said it will be a long wait... obviously trying to push an EDGE iPhone on me. I didn't bite.

Here's to hoping for a 3G, 32GB iPhone at 499$ :)

Here, here! I second the motion. I've been waiting since the initial reveal in '07 and decided to wait until the second big update. Definitely (and sadly) the longest 10 months of my life.

Well, in my opinion there can be two options!

1. If Apple decides to announce the iPhone at an event (eg. WWDC), then it'll be a brand new design with new features at the same old pricing.

2. If they upgrade it silently (unlikely to happen), then we can expect just a 3G upgrade in the same ol' iPhone! Prices may fluctuate!

The FCC will grant confidentiality on certain aspects of it before release. It may still mean that Apple will pre-announce it 4-6 weeks ahead of time, but it doesn't mean that we'll necessarily hear it from the FCC first.

I, for one. can see a small drawback with the update!

No more $50 iPhone Dock and Wall Adapter!

He He He :D

I wonder if any upgrade plan will be implemented? I'm guessing probably not, and I guess we'll see a lot of used iPhones on the market.

Ya wonder what a used 8gig will go for after the update is announced. Me Thinks not so much:rolleyes: I plan on selling mine only if the pricing starts at a max of 399 and the data plan is the same price.

I could really use that 3g speed. I use edge most of the time (so slow!) because it is just too much of a hassle to continually login to the wifi network at uw madison every time I switch buildings.

I don't know what its like in other countries but in the UK 3G is not anything like broadband, unless your broadband speed is rubbish. I know several people with 3G mobiles and have opened web pages at the same time as them to see how EDGE on the iPhone compared to their super amazing 3G, in most cases the 3G was faster but we are talking 15 seconds compared to 20 on an iPhone, on complex pages 30 seconds compared to 35 on the iPhone. Quicker, but really nothing to get excited about. In most cases the iPhone browser is a lot nicer and pages render really well compared to many of the browsers on other phones, so even if their page is up quicker it is usually without many of the images and some of the detail. If the iPhone can do load a full page much faster using 3G then fine, but at the cost of battery life and lots of cash - its not worth it.

Broadband it is not.

what kinds of speeds specifically are you getting on 3g and edge. It is not uncommon for me to get edge speeds of 30-50 kbps throughout madison. 3g may not be true broadband but I think it would be a helluva lot faster than those sub dial up speeds.
