Ya wonder what a used 8gig will go for after the update is announced. Me Thinks not so much:rolleyes: I plan on selling mine only if the pricing starts at a max of 399 and the data plan is the same price.

I could really use that 3g speed. I use edge most of the time (so slow!) because it is just too much of a hassle to continually login to the wifi network at uw madison every time I switch buildings.

It doesn't pick up the signal automatically? Whenever I go to a network that I've logged onto before, the phone auto-connects. It used to not work with my home network (unless the popup with networks showed up, otherwise I'd have to go into settings), but oddly, after I jailbroke my phone it always connects.

$599 $699 anyones guess. I won't buy until I know it can be unlocked hint hint.
Rj

I won't buy it if Apple seriously tries to sell something so overly priced!

Throwing in a 3G chip shouldn't cost the consumer a dollar more then a EDGE chip. Pretty much EVERY cellphone that costs more then $49.99 from AT&T has 3G. 3G is common place, and I'm sure the cost of chips have gone down since last year, so that Apple can include it at no extra charge. So any price INCREASE is just greed in my opinion.

If the iPhone wants to be a success, and get mass-market appeal for the "common-man" apple needs to price it like this:

$349 16G 3G
$449 32G 3G

And yes, that's a price decrease. Apple is still going to make money on the hardware...still going to make money on the AT&T contract...and guess what folks...Apple will make even MORE money with the Apps Store!!!!!!

Apple should learn from when they first launched the iPhone at a ridiculous price. People just won't pay such a high price....especially when a lot of that cost if pure profit to the Apple.

Latency

I think the reason 3G doesn't seem super-faster than EDGE is latency. Loading a Web page involves a lot of requests, and there are latency issues. Once a file starts coming in you get it at a good clip, but the response time isn't better than EDGE.

So a Web page loads a bit faster than EDGE, but the real advantage comes in when you are getting a big file like an image or PDF, or streaming in stuff like a QuickTime or YouTube movie. There, we will see things move!

Japan doesn't have a GSM network. Combine that with Verizon's new "we're-the-most-open-network" and I might be getting a CDMA iPhone this Christmas...

I don't know what its like in other countries but in the UK 3G is not anything like broadband, unless your broadband speed is rubbish. I know several people with 3G mobiles and have opened web pages at the same time as them to see how EDGE on the iPhone compared to their super amazing 3G, in most cases the 3G was faster but we are talking 15 seconds compared to 20 on an iPhone, on complex pages 30 seconds compared to 35 on the iPhone. Quicker, but really nothing to get excited about. In most cases the iPhone browser is a lot nicer and pages render really well compared to many of the browsers on other phones, so even if their page is up quicker it is usually without many of the images and some of the detail. If the iPhone can do load a full page much faster using 3G then fine, but at the cost of battery life and lots of cash - its not worth it.

Broadband it is not.

That's just the thing...the actual time it takes to display a page has a LOT to do with the rendering engine of the device's browser. And the iPhone's browser is worlds ahead of the browsers for other devices. So when you have a 3G iPhone rendering a page quickly, the result will be a page quickly downloaded and quickly displayed.

What will I look forward to

Continue enjoying my iPhone as I've done over the past six months.

And look forward to more people joining the iPhone group which will only bring more application development.

Which is what I'm really looking forward to. iPhone firmware 2.0

What kind of new features/design would we be talking about with the 3g iPhone? To be honest apple seems to have gotten the phone right the first time. Maybe get rid of that stupid recessed headphone jack. Colors? Maybe. But that seems a little trite. I say they'll add storage esp. with the new apps coming with the developers kit release.

I don't buy the June rumors. Maybe a June announcement for a release in August or September. My money is still in Q3, probably late Q3, when they announce all the iPod updates.

I think the main benefits to 3G is broader bandwidth where service is prime, due to provisioning of fiber from the towers. Also 3G is international base service. In the U.S., areas where 3G is not available (most places) it reverts to EDGE.

My question is actually more simple. Why not 5G since with AT&T and Apple this is greenfield?

EDGE is underestimated since after the iPhone release AT&T has been updating the tower based bandwidth and also it is the service NSA uses so has more coverage and backup than any other service here or anywhere.

I don't care about 3G, since there is none where I live! :p

(Mountainous area of NY)

Although, I will be going to college in Atlanta next year....so maybe...oh well. I'll have campus-wide Wi-Fi coupled with 802.1X login on the new iPhone 2.0. :)

I purposely haven't renewed my committment with Tmobile. I'm using an imported HTC TyTN2 phone. Once the iphone has 3g and Exchange, I'm in.... UNLESS.... ATT screws it all up and just screws everyone over with some bizarro data plan or outrageous pricing.

I will get iPhone 2.0! The biggest thing I want is for AT&T to get cheaper plans. They are way behind in that arena. And I want unlimited text for crying out loud. Their text options are a pathetic attempt to milk some more cash, even the most expensive plan doesn't have that for crying out loud. COME ON AT&T act like you are the network with the most revolutionary phone on earth!!!

As far as the 3G phone itself, I really hope we get 32GB. Everything else will be a bonus for me :D

Thats like saying, why use broadband when you have a 56k modem.

Because it is STILL available in FAR more places for basic access.

Please fix THAT first before you have a debate about bandwidth. Rural bandwidth matters too, perhaps more.

Apple abandoning modems WITHOUT adding EDGE cellular installed in laptops was their biggest mistake in the last 4 years.

To set the record straight:

For any phone that uses data, it's the same price rather you are using EDGE or 3G. Pay $29.99 and have EDGE? 3G is $29.99. AT&T doesn't know if you are on EDGE or 3G.
