I hope this means that Apple will finally release a model that works on either Verizon or Sprint's networks. If not then the iPhone will still be a crippled regular phone with a large screen, not a smart phone by the majorities standards.

Since 3G won't even touch WiMax it's a day late and a dollar short, hopefully Apple will release a phone that is opened to the other, more powerful networks now that the SDK will allow developers to make business worthy software for it.

There are a few things Apple & AT&T to do to get my money.
1. Make the darn phone 3G! Simple enough. (but see below)
2. Lower the cell phone contracts. Do the math, $20 for the add package for existing AT&T customers, + activation, I'm seeing about $400+. I'm in high school! I can't afford that!
3. Make the AppStore worth not Jailbreaking. Simple, done.
4. The 16GB size is perfect for me, I have a 16GB iPod touch, and it's simply great. I have about 9GB left over still.
5. Lower the cost of the actual phone.

In retrospect, here are my price points. (Feels like I'm back in September about the iPods:p)

  • iPhone, 8GB, EDGE (Basically the same version now, except with Firmware 2.0) $300

  • iPhone+, 16 GB, 3G, GPS, Firmware 2.0 $400

That's all folks!;):apple:

Sorry, they can't. If you see the amazing contract that AT&T + Apple agreed to, they have full rights to the iPhone until (I believe) 2010. Besides, the iPhone is only made for the GSM network. Imaging Verizon's crappy "RedOS" on the iPhone. Ugh.:p:apple:

As Butt-head says: bathe her and bring her to me...

Except don't bother with the bathing part. I wonder who will offer it in Japan. I hope it's Softbank:cool:

No iPhones in MA, USA

Just heard that Apple has sold out of the iPhone in MA.

Go into an Apple store and you can't get one. Not sure if other states are having the same problem, but they're gone here.

In where is this WiMax network you're referring too?

The iPhone is selling well, better than any other mobile/smart phone in the world.

Um you're in High School? Wow, I've only been out a few years but things have sure changed ;)

Maybe you shouldn't really require an iphone? A $400 phone plan and a $20 a month data plan means that they didn't really intend to target high schoolers.

Apple will stop selling the EDGE iPhone, and only sell a 3G iPhone.

It's going to be called iPhone Pro, or just iPhone 2.

It's going to have a slightly different design, but it will be very easy to distinguish the EDGE iPhone from the 3G iPhone.

Should have a better camera (dual cameras?), better speaker, POSSIBLY more storage space (a 16GB and 32GB version), and most likely other things.

Prices will be $400 for 16GB and $500 for 32GB

Date we see this in the US? June 27th.

Europe-Asia: Late July / Early August

I'm in high school and I'm getting the 3G iphone as soon as it gets out. In fact, I have $575 saved in my "iphone fund" lol. I'm also getting a Black macbook or a MacBook Air. And just to let you know, there are PLENTY of people I know in my school who have iphones.

It will not be called iPhone Pro or iPhone 2. Those monikers are comparison terms and would distinguish the "iPhone Pro" from the "iPhone Other". The 3G iPhone will just slide into the current iPhone space.

Apple will sell the "old" iPhone alongside the new ones for $299 until they run out. Lots of people are not phased by 3G because it isn't offered in their areas. Apple won't have a supply channel problem because the lower price EDGE-only version will still have demand (whether MacRumors readers think so or not.)

$399 for 16GB
$499 for 32GB

Two cameras - iChat built in. Announced at WWDC, pre-orders shipping in 1-2 weeks. [Edit] Japan, and 4 other new European countries will get the new phones with announced carrier agreements, beginning "in August." China to follow "in 2009."

Man, I really hope that comes true. I will use it in the states, but I just am hoping for news on WWDC day. Either that or we will have to wait until September. But heres to hoping Apple will do the right thing and get that thing out there ASAP!

Don't teenagers usually need/want the latest and greatest things? Oh, just because were in high school means that NO iPHONE FOR YOU!;)

I have an iPod touch that cost me $460 (including tax, case, etc.) iPhone = iPod touch.

Besides, I know plenty of people of have iPhones as well. There quite popular in my high school

Not at least until 2010 or beyond, likely beyond.

What we're likely to see, IMO, is a 4G (3GPP LTE) phone in 2012 for different carriers - T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon (verizon is joining the GSM bandwagon for their next generation network). Sprint is going WiMax probably, and they could do a phone for that too if Sprint wants to play ball (since the iPhone could contain an x86 Atom-based CPU, it would be easy for Intel to add a WiMax chip into the mix).

Speeds for the 4G network are supposed to be amazing - up to 376Mb/s down and 86Mb/s upstream (maximum throughput rates for each 20MHz chunk of spectrum). Even if experience speeds are 10% of that, its an amazing boost.

I want the iphone in SPAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do people really think that Apple will just release the 3G iPhone without any prior announcement? It seems that a large chunk of people believe it will be released in June at the WWDC without any prior announcement. This doesn't make sense to me, especially if there does end up being a redesign.

Apple would miss out on huge advertising opportunities if they just started selling the 3G iPhone some day without announcement or anything, the sales would not be as high. If anything happens in June, I think it will be the announcement of a 3G iPhone for somewhere around Nov./Dec. That seems to make more sense to me than simply making an announcement that the iPhone 3G will start selling today.

....Price speculations....

Some of you guys are funny apple plans to release an 6 years old technology and you are speculating on an price increase of $100-$200

3G - Next generation phone network.... Americans are funny.

Nope, you're completely wrong. When Apple is ready to release a 3G iPhone, they will just announce it. They may say it will be available in a month, but no longer. The reason for this is that they don't want people holding off buying an iPhone. If Apple silently released a 3G iPhone tomorrow, they would get plenty of press, as they do when they update any of their main products.

The redesign in the next iPhone is really not that much of difference. A camera behind the glass in the front. That's it. The overall design will remain the same.

That wasn't the point. I'm sure plenty of high schoolers have iphones, but what the other poster meant was that Apple will not set their iphone price to target high schoolers.

I have $450 saved for when an iPhone finally comes to Canada by Rogers.. however if they charge an arm and a leg for it... then I'll just go to Minneapolis and get one there. 3 year contract and an iPhone costing more than the iPhone in the US just doesnt seem right

How does backwards compatibility work from 3G down?
3G backs up to EDGE when 3G service is not available, so this is not an issue.
Every 3G phone in the world except Japan backs up to 2G when 3G is not available. That's one reason 3G phones have been bigger.... and Japan didn't bother with the 2G in their handsets so kept quite small 3G phones.

I'm not sure a 3G phone's data would all fall back to 2.5G Edge though... they may just drop to regular GPRS. Depends on the chipset I'd _guess_.

I don't know what its like in other countries but in the UK 3G is not anything like broadband, unless your broadband speed is rubbish.
Fortunately, they rumours are usually talking about HSPA iPhones (or 3.5G). I used mine the other day at 1.5Mbps, it was great. Battery ran down fairly quickly though. The highest speeds are past 7.2Mbps now... it comes down to how many users can keep reasonable speeds simultaneously.

Millions of people don't think (that 3G is worth it).

Most 3G users don't end up using their phone for data. iPhone users do... so it'll be really interesting how it's accepted.

Yea I can't imagine Apple having both 2.5 and 3G phones on the market like that. I can see them selling off the 2.5G models to shift stock

Certainly they'd sell out their existing stock...
But I think it's possible we'll see 2.5 and 3.5G phones on the market simultaneously - if there's a significant difference in the cost of production.

I'm assuming we'll see some better technologies in all aspects of the phone - screen, battery, antennas, wireless, you name it. If Apple are going to keep a 2.5G phone they'll update all the components to some degree in a new 2.5G iPhone. Perhaps with the stock dropping in New York, Massachusetts & California we'll see a new (bumped up) 2.5G iPhone sooner than we're expecting.

I wonder if 3.5G and 2.5G phones will differentiate more on their plan costs than on the upfront costs (since 3.5G can use considerably more data).

Sort of random... but what does everyone think of AT&T Mobile TV for the next iPhone? The service is launching in May, and seems to be a perfect target for the iPhone.

Details: http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/27/atandt-announces-atandt-mobile-tv-for-may-launch/

Note: This does NOT use 3G data, it uses a separate built-in receiver in the phone.

A very good thought. If it happens, perhaps Apple will release an AppleTV DVR alongside it.
