I got to the mall at 5 AM and was told they were not going to open the doors until 6. Went to Starbuck and purchased a large coffee for the wait. By 5:50 there were maybe 100 people lined up to run to the Apple Store. I was 5th in the non reserved line and the reserve line was much longer. Store open promply at 7 and I was out by 7:30. As many people waiting as the last 2 launch days maybe more. I guess 150/200 people in line as I was leaving. Going to much bigger than I was expecting. Phone is fantastic... much faster than my 3G

Before I left my house this morning to get mine, all the speed comparison videos amazed me.

I got mine from the Apple Store in Novi, MI - Twelve Oaks Mall. I was 14th in the non-reserved line. At this store, they let in about 25 reserved people right away. Then, they were doing a ratio of about 4 reserved people for every one non-reserved person.

In the end, I got in line around 6:30, left at 8:30 with my 32GB Black iPhone 3G S!

I was not expecting the lines that I saw. Looks like Apple will have another stellar launch!

the compass doesnt work while driving..or atleast it didnt for me..kept saying it couldnt calibrate cuz of interference...

wtf?

anyone else?

You are in a car surrounded by metal and electronics that emit a magnetic field. The compass uses a magnetometer

Just dropped off from Fed Ex

I must say that this beats standing in line for hours on end with little to no sleep like i did when the 3g came out, then had all the issues with activation. Delivered to my door...sitting in the AC and breezing through set up. The phone is as expected. If you loved the previous and did your research then there are no surprises on features. Straight and simple the phone does as advertised and the video feature is great and very good quality...but then again we have all been living without a video camera so something in my opinion is better than nothing.

YES. Video recording alone makes it worth it - the quality's great.

-L

right there with you....the quality of the video and the camera were much better than my anticipations! the mic pics up great and doesnt have alot of background noise either! :D +1 for apple

Not that longer wait in our O2, 30 Mins max. Well 'Endowed' O2 Lady served me, was very good. As i have a 3G Contract i didnt need to top up £10 either!

3G S itself feels sturdier than the 3G, and the Silent Switch is a lot better.

Just finished syncing, and have uploaded a quick video test, will link when its ready.

true....still not as good as the 2g IMO. BUT, the screen is better i think. my volume rocker doesnt seem too sturdy and the vibrate switch tends to stick...but hey, i got 30 days to get an exchange for a new one, no exceptions. so im good :p

all in all, my first impression after using the 2g for 1.5 years and the 3g for about 6 months:

1. the speed is amazing, definitely a HUGE difference and makes the whole 'smartphone'/'computer' experience perfect
2. the oleophobic screen is a nice addition. it still gets fingerprints, but easily wipeable and not as visible.
3. camera!!! the new 3mp is great, autofocus and macro are great!! i will upload some good comparison photos i got later. but it is a substantial improvement.
4. the video camera exceeds all of my expectations....like i said above, the quality is GREAT for a phone and the mic pics up the perfect amount of noise and voices.
5. the voice control is great too!!! havent had a wrong answer yet!

all in all, a GREAT upgrade and worth the $199 if you can get that price. i hope everyone enjoys it as much as i am thus far! thanks :D

Time to activate/restore 3G S

My 32gb arrived at 9:10am EDT. It took 1 hr 20 min to unbox activate and restore 13gb:)

very pleased with the speed of the phone...my old one (3G 16GB) is/was slow as hell compared to this one

video recording is sweet too, very crisp and makes Cycorder look like crap

I LOVE my 3G S iPhone!

Voice control works surprising well. I've told it to dial numbers in my contacts, numbers digit by digit andit understood me everytime. I haven't tried using voice control yet for the iPod.

Compass works very nicely as well. It told me to wave the phone in a figure 8 to get the compass to work the first time and it did. North pointed in the direction it should and all is well.

Most apps open instantly and iTunes and app store open allot faster as well.

Nice volume control on the headset,

Screen is as promised. It doesn't attract finger prints as much.

Camera ato focus works very well even in low light. I haven't tried the video camera yet.

All in all, it was well worth it for me to upgrade.

to answer your question... YES!

Hey everyone. I just took a chance this morning and drove over to my local AT&T Store about 45 minutes after they had opened. I was looking for a 16gb iPhone 3GS in white, and they had ONE left!!

Very first impressions:

It does run very smoothly, and quickly. However, in Apple's built in apps, I don't think you notice the speed increase very much unless you're comparing it side by side with a regular iPhone 3G...and to be honest, even then, opening SMS, photos, Sarafi, it's just BARELY faster on the 3GS...But this thing IS snappy. I'm assuming I'll notice much faster load times when I get some 3rd party apps on it later.

I don't yet notice a different in the quality of the pictures taken. Granted all of them so far have been in indoor/less than ideal lighting conditions. The autofocus DOES work quite well though.

The video recording works VERY well! The quality is very nice, by far the best I've personally seen on a mobile phone. It's also a snap to edit and trim the video. Really fun to use! So far for me, the video recording was worth the price of admission!

That's all I got so far! Maybe I'll update later when I can get it home and get some apps on it.

i got to the ATT store at 730 and there maybe 2 familes. total of about 10 people
they let me and my girlfriend and her mom in at 730 to get our iphones
not bad!

Mine arrived at about 9:45 via UPS. That was the first time UPS was early or on time with something I ordered, and to think last night I was pulling my hair out because my tracking info still said Hong Kong :). I love the speed, it loads websites so fast, YouTube is sooo much better.

Got mine at 9am BST. Been using it 7 hours now. The speed is amazing compared to my 2g. It makes it a much better experience. I don't think I will ever turn my pc on again. I love it!

Ps there were no queues, I was in and out of the store in 5 Mins

I got mine in! I like how it feels in my hand, compared to my 2G. I'm syncing right now. Can't wait to play with it!

It's finally Friday, July 19. Lines will start to form in Apple Stores and AT&T stores across the US in about an hour. This thread is for iPhone 3G S owners to post their first impressions, or just brag that they have an iPhone 3G S. I'll be getting my iPhone 3G S in a few days from the online Apple Store.

Ha ha, you're way too excited. It's June 19th mate.;)

I posted this in another thread, I'm just copying because I think it's better placed here. Sorry if that offends anyone.

The screen on the new 3G S is definitely brighter, more colorful, but also more glossy and has a rainbow-like reflection. Also, the vibrate is much quieter and doesn't feel as noticeable in your pocket. It's much faster and smoother than the old one. The compass and video recording really work great - I was surprised with the video quality. Overall, all apps across the board load much faster and web pages in Safari load quicker as well. The olephobic coating on the screen is awesome, all you need is a quick wipe on your shirt or pant leg and it's all clean. The letters on the back are chrome colored now in the same style as the Apple logo compared to the gray on the 3G. Also, the new headphones with volume buttons that come with it are great - they are the same ones that come with the new iPod Shuffle. I didn't test audio quality, but I'm sure they are just as mediocre as the ones that ship with the 3G.

The 3G is on the left and the new 3G S is on the right for all the comparisons. For the repeats with different focuses I was just trying to show how the 3G S seemed glossier. Can anyone with the new 3Gs tell if the new screen will accept a screen saver/protector or will it look weird/smoky because of the new screen type?

A lot of good first impressions in here, it makes me really want a 3GS now. I'm not eligable for upgrade until May 2010. The next-gen iPhone will be all the rage by then. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't take a nice 32 gig right about now lol.

Enjoy your 3GS everyone!

Lolz! FedEx tracking says my phone is on the truck awaiting delivery. Ironic is because my office is right across the street from the FedEx station here in Boulder Co. Oh wait.. I see it! Hurry up and drive the 100 feet over here!!! :D
