I rang the sales rep who sold me my customised 27" imac he said it should be here by next week as it's in customs in Sydney. I just got a late 2013 13" MacBook retina today for 10% off, I will post pictures of them together sometime next week.

Immediately hold down cmd + R when starting up for the first time to get to the Recovery partition. If you see a mountain lion and a linnen background you're running OS X Mountain Lion. ;)

Not sure why you would settling with an "about as clean a system as you can get" if you can get a 100% clean system... In the end it's your own choice though, I know what I'll be doing with my new iMac.

I meant if apple made sure *anything* worked in the install system it would have been with a 0-modification version of their own previous version of the OS! People have not done wipe-and-install for years. Maybe it would make sense after some of the tweaks I wind up having to do but in general just installing it as anything else from the app store is pretty seamless. I opened my machine at about 9 last night, did about an hour of poking around and then went to sleep. This morning I was able to boot, look around some more while Mavericks completed downloading, then do the complete installation in another hour. Later today will be installing ram, data migration and copying my system/stock applications to an SSD then tomorrow is the fun stuff of reinstalling (or copying) applications and testing one that are questionable. This weekend is the much more boring initial backups (time machine and full system) and testing things with the work network.

It turns out when you download I could not find the option to just download as on previous systems (I did that making a lion virtual machine for testing once). If there were though it would have required making a USB boot from it (plus a late night trip to staples since I do not have a spare one lying around). No matter though, as of this morning I now have a working mavericks install on my machine.

BTW, was I the only one that geeked out at the engineering involved in the inner and outer boxes?

I just finished doing an Erase & Install of OS X Mavericks on my new 2013 iMac. No USB stick or otherwise was required.

New iMac 21.5 arrived today

I ordered my new iMac 21.5 on the 18 October and it arrived this afternoon. On the box it says assembled in Ireland and despatched from Cork

Specification:

iMac 21.5
Processor 3.1GHz Quad Core Intel i7
16 GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRam
HDD 1TB Fusion Drive
Nvdia GeForce GT750m 1GB GDDR5
plus a numeric keypad and Magic Mouse.

This is my first Apple Mac as I have always had PC's before this, so interesting times ahead.

Currently downloading Mavericks, about 1 hour to go. Then I will transfer photos and itunes plus some of my office files, which I use all the time, contacts and then setup mail.

Cheers for now.

It turns out I wound up doing a clean install anyway as I needed to put a copy on my SSD. Although now I probably have two recovery partitions where I want only one and that on the hard drive. ARGH!

The OS X Mountain Lion recovery partition is replaced by the OS X Mavericks one.

After mulling about getting once since the 2012 models came out, and waiting for the price of the nMP, i pulled the trigger on the iMac.

3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
• 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
• 512GB Flash Storage
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
• Apple Magic Mouse
• Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
• Accessory Kit

I went back and forth on it for a long time, still can't understand how i configured a $1800 base line computer to over $3k!!!

but...

I really wanted an i7 vs i5for audio work
512 flash storage so i can have all flash, no noise and flash drive with bootcamp.
780m because... it was only $150 more. And in CASE i wanted to play an awesome game.
and Apple Care... made a mistake of not getting apple care with my MBP. not happening again.

ugh. 3k. ouch. Going to hold off that iPad 5 for now...

is the 3rd time the charm?

after a dead LCD on a refurb i decided to grab a new base 21.5 iMac from Apple Retail. 10 days with it, i love it, but realize i should have purchased one with Fusion. i mean i am going to have this machine for a while. we had our last PC for 5 or 7 years because we really just use it for email, internet, and family photo/video stuff.

back to the Apple store for a no question easy return yesterday then i ordered another online. this time i should be good. :)

i ordered the exact same machine for the exact same reasons a week ago! :))

its supposed to arrive within 72hrs now.

kinda having a hard time to sleep here.. :D

I´m considering to install a 4tb hdd either right away or a few months down the road..
have you heard/read/ anything about ten sensor problems / fan spinning up in the 2013 model?

ram will be upgraded too of course..

Just ordered my first Mac :)

So I ordered my first iMac a couple of days ago and I am super excited :)

I ordered the 27"model online:

NVIDIA GeForceGTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
1TB Fusion Drive

The note says it will take 6 business days to ship (from Ireland, to England). However I was feeling impatient today so took a trip to the Apple store in the Trafford Centre in Manchester to see if I could pick one up from there instead and cancel this online order.

The look truly amazing, like nothing I have seen before. So biiiggg.

However they only have 2012 models in stock. I found this pretty surprising; is this common for Apple stores?

Also, how accurate is the estimated delivery date on their website? It says to expect delivery on the 6th November.

Thanks guys :)

I ordered on Tuesday the 22nd, and I received the notice that it shipped late last night. No tracking number yet though. Mine is not maxed out like many folks, so I suspect that is the reason it shipped sooner. i5 1tb fusion 780m.

My iMac order has moved from 'Processing' to 'Preparing for Dispatch'!
One step closer!

**Happy dance**
:D:D

Update: Now it's been dispatched! Whoop Whoop

**Mega Super Happy Dance**

Finally pulled the trigger to replace my trusty mid-2007 iMac

Might bump the memory up to 24GB, and have to consider archive and time-machine needs (I have a FW 2x2TB RAID that should work for quite a while).

Be cool to have a nice new FAST mac!

AppleCare Protection Plan for iMac - Auto-enroll

Fed X is saying it could be here by Saturday 11/2/2013

How cool!!!!

I've come full circle and decided it's back to the iMac. Had one earlier this year, but decided to return it. Ordered the refurb $1999 680 version and should have it tomorrow. Was checking out the new updated rmbp and comparing to iMac screen, but have been getting into photography this past year and just like the big screen for photo editing and will also do some gaming, so this was going to be my solution for my needs since I already have personal ipad3, and a late 2010 Air from work that I use.

I just received my iMac (27" 3.5Ghz i7, 4GB 780M, 512GB SSD) - was due 8th November but was shipped early!

This is my first iMac and even in the first hour I learnt a lot - so a few tips for those who have orders on the way:

- upgrading RAM. I have installed 32GB RAM (Kingston DDR3 1600mhz CL9 1.5v) and it is running great. However, when I first installed it, it wouldn't switch on (fans would come on briefly then go back off). If this happens to you, be calm... simply take the RAM back out carefully and re-insert/re-seat it. I know people love the whole "you've got to force it in until it clicks"... well mine went it with very little pressure and clicked quietly. Also, the RAM will only go in one way because of the off-centre notch on the bottom. This is also a good gauge to see if the RAM is pushed fully down onto the little plastic bit that the notch fits into.

- Yellow Screen. The first thing you will see after set up is the app store. Mine shipped with Lion so doing an upgrade (you also get your free iMovie/iLife etc).
Compared to my Macbook Pro it would be easy to say "arrgggghh... yellow screen"! but there are a few things to note before you do:

have you colour calibrated it yet? My old 2008 MBP screen was much cooler in temp and was calibrated- the new iMac was MUCH warmer. I set the correct white point and it's much better.

Secondly, the background of the app store app is not uniform and can make it look like there is a colour difference.

Also, the screen is pretty big and a slight change in viewing angle can make it appear slightly darker/lighter at the top.

Overall I'm happy with it! it's an absolute beast in size... bigger than I thought it would be but it'll be. I've only tried opening and closing a few of the basic apps but it is blazingly fast so can't wait to check out photoshop and use it for work!

What do you think of my new iMac (Shipping, will show pics when I get it)?

Core i7
16 gb ram
780m
3tb hdd

My only issue is with the 3TB Hard drive. I would have gotten an SSD as a boot drive. If you get an SSD as the boot drive your system will run so much faster. You could still get a larger external hard drive for your content and data.

I'm planning on getting a thunderbolt with a larger ssd for fusion.. And I didn't have a choice in the matter anyway since I didn't buy from Apple, I did get a really good deal though.
