Had to make an account just to say my 27 inch iMac just came! I'm so excited. This is my first Apple computer since my 2008 MBP. I have iPods, iPhones and iPads, but this is my first iMac. I even luckily had today off of work just to mess around with it.

I ordered a new 21in iMac yesterday. This is my first and I was wondering if there is a recovery partition that I can use to restore the machine to factory image should I need to? Also, I hear viruses and other spy/malware are not a problem. True? My ISP has free Norton protection, should I install it or not? thanks

Sounds like your first Mac. Congrats! Yup, there's a recovery partition although I prefer to keep a USB boot disk lying around, just in case.

Yeah, you don't have to worry about viruses (why doesn't everyone buy Macs for this reason alone). Norton will be a waste of hard drive space and CPU usage.

Recently moved house and now that I'm settled in I've decided to pick up a 2nd hand 2011 21.5 iMac. Got the 2.7Ghz/6770M model, and still got 6 months warranty on it for £550. It's nice to have a bigger screen compared to the MBP! I couldn't quite justify the price of a brand new one as it's not going to be doing anything heavy.

Just waiting for the OWC kit to arrive through the post then I'm going to put in a 64GB Sandisk SSD to make a fusion drive with the 1TB drive. In the meantime I'm booting my MBP in target disk mode and using thunderbolt to save me messing around moving all my files only to wipe the iMac again when I make the fusion drive.

I may eventually sell my MBP for an 11" MBA too, see how it goes :p

I got a freaking HUGE deal about 3 weeks ago; not technically new/refurb from the Apple store, but still, I think you'll understand.

My wife moseys downstairs as I'm futzing around with my Mac Mini (the one released in 2012, I think), and asks "Is this a good price for this iMac?"

I was half-inclined to look quickly and say "Naah" as she's usually a bit behind the times. I did a double-take at the specs, however; and immediately called the guy, and asked "Is this for real?" He said "Yep." I asked him "Can you hold this a half hour? I can be there in that amount of time - I assure you, I WILL buy this."

So I got there, and got the following:

27" iMac 2.7GHz QC Core i5
6770
1TB HD
8GB RAM

Price?

$400. :D This is selling for $1,129 in the Apple Store right now. It came with the normal stuff - iMac itself, Apple Wireless Keyboard/Mouse, and that touchpad thing.

Not a thing wrong with it. The guy selling it was a captain in the Army (I do IT work for the gov't), was getting out in a week, and had a Mini Cooper, and the box wouldn't fit in the backseat. LOL! So he set it at a firesale price, and my wife happened to be the lucky first person to notice it. The guy got FIVE other calls as I was handing him the money. :D

My new iMac was delivered today. 27" i7 3.5GHz, 780M graphics, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD. Yay!

Got most apps reinstalled this evening (I chose to start fresh instead of migrating my old machine's Time Machine backup - too much old cruft built up).

All my big stuff (iTunes media, iMovie projects, etc.) is on an external RAID, so I didn't have to worry about copying all of that. Just plug and play thanks to the RAID.

It's now busy running it's first Time Machine backup, so it'll be out of commission for the next 9 hours backing up 2.2TB of data from both the iMac's internal SSD and the external 4TB RAID on to an even bigger RAID.

My new iMac was delivered yesterday, a 27" i5 3.2GHz with 512GB SSD and a 2TB Airport ac Time Capsule. Loving exploring it and setting it up! My first Mac, having spent the last ~30 years on the DOS-OS/2-Windows x.x side of the fence. OS/X isn't proving so strange however, as I've also had quite a bit of Unix experience, so there's a lot I recognise!

I've been loitering in this forum for a couple of months to learn from others, and to ensure that my machine would have Mavericks when shipped, and glad I held on for a while. I've been extremely impressed by how rapid the whole setup process is, typically Apple, more or less supply your Apple ID and there you go - all your important info brought in from iCloud ready to go. My screen is perfect, none of the yellow cast thats been a significant topic here, and totally silent unless I stick my ear right up against the back of the case near the speakers.

Lots of exploring and planning to do now, then I have a migration to do over the next month or two of all my documents, music , photos etc from my Windows 7 machine. Should be fun

Just picked up my base model 27in iMac. Replaced my 2007 17in iMac that I just use to surf the web and do some basic tasks. A very welcome upgrade!

After an attempt to install a samsung 840 ssd in my 2009 21.5" iMac went disastrously wrong due to a very stupid mistake on my part i have just caved in and ordered myself a new iMac.

I have order the upgraded 27" iMac with superdrive and magic trackpad, and decided to use my samsung 840 ssd in a usb/thunderbolt enclosure rather than letting it go to waste.

Delivery next tuesday and i can't wait! :) I have been using a 2013 macbook air in the meantime and the 13" screen takes some getting used to coming from a 21.5" iMac

It turned up today! well all except the trackpad...

So glad I went for the 27" it's amazing and that's without the ssd as I've not got my enclosure yet.

I bought my parents a maxed out 20" iMac since their c2d one was dying.
How long does it take to ship? I assuming it's coming from China?

Just ordered my third 27" iMac via the Apple Refurb site. Kinda excited about the new design. Just need a super drive now…..whooooohooo

I just ordered a 2013 iMac core i7, 512 GB SSD, and 16 GB of RAM last night, I plan to install another 16 GB myself. Anyone order a similar configuration recently and remember how long it took to receive it? I'm in no hurry just curious!

EDIT: It just shipped tonight! Arriving on Friday from Newark, CA!!!!

Finally Ordered

Kept procrastinating between fusion and all SSD and whether to wait for a display upgrade. Couldn't hold out any longer and went with a 27-I7-1TB fusion-8G. Thought for what I do I didn't need all flash. Planning on adding 2 8G Ram sticks myself. Should be quite an upgrade to my 2006 21 1/2 model.

I LOVE IT!!

Awesome

21.5 inch display
8gb RAM
1TB hard drive
quad core i7

It is brilliant, the screen is amazing and it is one of the most responsive machines i have worked with.

I use a windows 7 laptop at work, i7 quad core and 12gb RAM and this is far superior!!!

I've been a PC guy ever since the early 90's. Built them, upgraded them, was very comfortable around Windows in general... until Windows 8. That was the last straw for me, the direction MS is taking is not the direction I want to take.

Owning an iPhone, an iPad, even an AppleTV, it finally hit me that I might actually consider a non-Windows PC for my desktop. A Mac? ..really? I'm going there? A Mac? Me?

After mulling it over for a couple of weeks, looking into the hardware specs and comparisons, and talking it over with a few people... I finally did it. On January 10 I placed an order for a custom 27" iMac! 3.5GHz i7, 16GB, 1TB Fusion and the GTX 780M.

So, it's been just over 2 weeks and still waiting. I live in Finland so I'm not expecting anything fast - I didn't even order it straight from Apple. 2-5 weeks they said. I wish I could say I'm not holding my breath but I am.

Anyway... that was the story, now here's a question:

How common is the yellow screen thing in Late 2013 iMacs? Or other faults in general? I usually don't have very good luck with hardware, my current PC had to visit the shop a few times due to faulty hardware. Keeping my finger very crossed.

I have a new iMac (my first) since 2 days and if i move a tiny window from top to the bottom on the screen i can clearly see that the color temperature gets warmer (more yellowish) but other than that i don't notice this because it's pretty subtile. The screen itself looks very good, the color temperature is very warm (i like cold a bit more) but it's a very stunning, clear display. I had a yamakasi 27 inch WQHD before and the iMac is so much better (i think because of the glass).

So i don't have a perfect display but i like it very much. Anyways i'm returning the iMac because the fan produce "weird" noises which annoys me (although it's very quiet). So don't overthink the screen thing. Try it 14 days and if you like it, take it, if not, return it. :)

Ugh. I've a feeling I'll end up returning it as well.. it seems very common to get a faulty screen and/or fan noise. At these prices they should be perfect.

Where did you order it from?

I live in Finland too (Helsinki), placed an order for BTO iMac (3.5GHz i7, 8GB RAM (Bought 32GB of Kingston HyperX DDR3L 1.35v from Germany), 256GB SSD and GTX 780M) on the 22nd and it shipped two days later, on last friday (24th), it should be here on 29th based on UPS's estimate.

Verkkokauppa, figured I'd save on AppleCare by getting their free 3 year warranty. After reading that though, I wish I'd just got it from Apple. Someone was complaining it took 6 weeks to get it through them and there was something wrong with it too. Was close to xmas though so I'm hoping it won't take THAT long now.
