The "I just ordered/bought/got my new/refurb iMac" thread [merged]

Refurb iMac arrived today

I ordered 27" i7 3TB Fusion machine off of the refurb store on Wednesday for delivery today (Friday) as I was going to be home.

The courier actually tried to deliver it yesterday which would have been great had I been here.

I phoned Apple, who could not have been more helpful - I couldn't honestly moan because they were trying to get it to me a day earlier, but I explained I had ordered specifically for today as i had the day off, and she completely understood. She promised to call the courier and arrange for a redelivery today and phoned me back at 8am this morning to confirm it was out for delivery today.

Duly arrived, and I am delighted. Just getting a 100k Aperture library moved over and iTunes to follow. iMovie can wait till tomorrow.

The machine has the 680 2GB VRAM v card although it stated 675 1GB on the shop so actually better than I thought and, fully priced at £2450 - paid £1999. It is spotless, and quiet - absolutely quiet - just hear it ticking with the Aperture data transfer.

This is my 3rd iMac ( first in the refurb store), last one from early 2008 is still going strong but slow under Aperture which was a pain - my son will have this and I think it will be fine for him.

So far so good!

I had no idea you could do that. :D Probably because you can't do it from the "Edit" menu, and unless you're a nerd you'd have NO idea you could even do it at all.

In any case, very awkward commands. No idea why Apple didn't make it CMD+X, CMD+V, like it is in Path Finder/Windows. And in PF you can right click, hit "cut", right click, hit "paste." Or do it from the Edit menu etc. And you can customize the right click menu. Oh but don't let me get too involved in its awesomeness. :)

CMD+C is Copy, CMD+X is Cut, and CMD+P is Paste just as you would expect.

iMac came today! So far extremely pleased. One thing though: I tried using BlackMagic Disk Speed test on the Macintosh HD, and it says it can't because it's read only... Huh? Any advice?

Edit: Never mind, added myself to the sharing and permissions list and set to "Read and Write". Amazing speeds on that Fusion drive!

Got mines today as well. It was brand new, no damage or anything like that at all. The only downfall for me was the lcd panel has this minor pressure damage causing it show a bright circle that's about 2mm..

Still thinking If I'll go to Apple Store, because not entirely sure they'd be willing to replace it.

I think you definitely should if there's something you're not 100% happy with!

After talking myself out of it for months, I finally ordered a 27-inch with i7, 680MX, 3TB Fusion on Thursday which shipped the same day and should be here tomorrow.

I kept hesitating since I didn't want to order right before a refresh or back to school sale, but we will see what happens. Despite that, I'm pretty pumped up since this will be my first desktop in about 8 years (been using laptops exclusively since around 2005) and I'm looking forward to the extra screen space for games/movies. Should be awesome after being used to 15 inch displays for so long

First desktop

Upgraded my PC to Windows 8, and, after writing that OS off as dead, I ordered my first ever Mac (and desktop computer) through a friend who used his EPP for me.

Specs:
i7, 1TB Fusion, 8gb (to be bumped to 24 for the time being w/crucial sticks), GeFrc 675MX

Ended up being $2200 and change with California tax + whatever the extra memory cost me from the crucial website ($100+).

Did I make a mistake not upping the graphics? Just curious about the performance since a lot of people seem to be dissing the cards on some other reviews I've read. Also, what's the difference gonna be between 24gb memory and 32? Haven't yet sprung for two more 8gb sticks--still deciding on the effectiveness of that option.

Well I finally decided to go for it and buy a 27" iMac for video editing.

I was tossing up between a 6 core Windows PC or waiting for the new Mac Pro. I decided to go with the iMac because I really wanted to stay with OS X and I didn't want to wait for the Mac Pro, especially considering prices haven't been released.

Specs
i7, 256GB SSD, 680MX, 8GB RAM

I plan to put 32GB RAM in it myself. Am I able to buy 24GB of RAM and use the 8GB that it already comes with, or do I need to buy a matching set?

Thanks all

snapdragonx, you'll have to buy 4 8gig sticks. Apple ships the 27" imac with two 4gig ones, but there's only four ports for RAM. So, to max it out, you'll need to scrap the Apple supplied ones.

Thanks for the info.

Does any DDR3 1600mhz RAM work?

It's CL 11 PC12800s ddr3 1600 SODIMM, 204-pin configuration.

Make sure you get matching CL ratings or your iMac will have to run the ram at 1333 MHz due to the mismatched latency.

Like this.

If there is a refresh soon (unlikely IMO as it has only been about 220 days since the last refresh) it'll be a small spec-bump. The Haswell equivalent of the current iMac i7 is only about 6-10% faster, which most people wouldn't notice.

Aside from that it might get Wireless AC, faster PCIe SSD and a slightly faster GPU.

Not worth waiting for. I just ordered my 27" iMac and I'm glad I did!

Thanks for giving your opinion, I didn't know that was just a small improvement. I think that if it is as you told it doesn't worth to wait.

Have you ordered it as a brand new or refurbished?

Million $ question, new or refurb?

More like a dollar, no offence. But if you want or need specific specs and can't find what you're looking for refurbished, go with new.

What's upsetting about going the refurbished route is that you can't get a student discount or the back to school give away. Granted that all you get is a itunes gift card, but still.

If you're able to find the right spec refurbished iMac is it worth going for over new?

I get work discount but it doesn't compare to either refurbished or educational prices.

I can save myself £200 by going the refurb route.

If you buy a refurb you should still expect a flawless unit right?

I'm curious, how many of the new iMacs are assembled in the USA?

All of them, just some, just BTO, just refurb?

Anyone know?

I ask because I'm still waiting for my new iMac and I'm wondering if it's going to ship from the USA or China.

If I found the specs I wanted I would for sure go the refurb route because as you said, it saves around $200. I think the refurb price is better than the educational price for those in North America for sure because the education discount is only $100 plus a free $100 itunes gift card.

If you buy a refurb, you should for sure still expect a flawless unit. But if that's not what you get, you can return it and another one should be sent out to you. Plus all Apple computers automatically have one year of Apple Care, so I wouldn't worry too much about something being wrong with a refurbished machine. Good luck.

Ah I hate waiting for stuff to arrive.

The TNT Tracker has been stuck at
Pudong International Airport Shipment In Transit.

For over 48 hours now. Must be a slow plane :(

Damn, now "Delayed. Recovery action underway". That can't be good.

Just curious - what are you doing for external storage? I also just ordered a 27" BTO iMac for video editing, and went with an internal 3TB fusion drive as I have a lot of raw video to work with (just home movies). I could have purchased a firewire/USB/Thunderbolt drive for storing the video files, but the diff in price between a 1TB internal drive and a 3TB internal drive was about the same price as buying external storage.

The one thing that is giving me pause is future expandability. I like the look of a Drobo for this, but at $775 for the external thunderbolt Drobo I didn't take the leap.

I use a Stardom USB 3 external RAID enclosure (around $250) with 2x 1TB hard drives.

I've got it set up in RAID 0 for added performance. Works great for video editing.

The benefit of this is easily being able to swap drives out, plus I can use it on any computer.

Maybe the flight ran into problems, big problems
