I'm in this situation myself. Around New Years' My mid-2007 MacBook no longer charges its battery, and according to the Apple Geniuses it requires a costly logic board repair. Instead of investing hundreds of dollars in what is already a 2.5-year-old computer, I decided to get a new one. I was disappointed to discover that the base 13" MBP had the same processor (only 100MHz more, but with 1MB less cache), same RAM, same display resolution, etc as my current MacBook, and is only $400 less than what I paid 2.5 years ago. However, since Apple had scheduled a media event for the 27th of January, and since I figured there was a good chance of an update during the event I decided to wait.

Now that the event has come and gone without a word on the MBP lineup I've started to question my need for a Mac. I've already installed Ubuntu on a partition of my current MacBook to see if it can meet my needs, and I've started to question my investment in my Apple infrastructure (Power Mac G4 server, iPhone, Apple TV, Airport Extreme, etc) and look at other options (I've had my eye on the Nexus One). Though I'll still likely purchase the MBP update, assuming they can get it out by the end of the month, it may very well be the last Apple product I purchase for a while, if ever.

I appreciate your elaborate rundown. I see you mentioned Lenovo, what do you think about the W series? I will mostly be using the computer for web design and eventually graphic design.

The only model that uses the newer architectures is the W510 - its a widescreen laptop display, and personally I'm not too big of a fan of those in mobile machines. Other then that, it looks like a solid performer. If you need accurate colour though, investing in an external monitor is always a good idea... Although I think there is a *VA or *IPS panel in the LCD (since there is a "Colour sensor" option, which makes me think you can calibrate the display). Don't take my word for it, its a hunch and I haven't been able to turn up any info on yet.

Eventually, though, for graphic design you'll need colour accuracy (I would think, though), which means spending a chunk of change for a nice monitor.

The only thing stopping me from switching to those very beautiful Sony Vaio Zs is the fact that I've invested in Logic Pro and am starting to learn Final Cut Express. That and OS X. For me like many others, there is NO turning back from :apple:!

However, I do have a nice small collection of bluray discs which would work quite happily in the Sony Vaio Z.

Dear Steve,
Have you seen the Sony Vaio Z? Perhaps someone should show you what the others are up to. Not interested? Then release something that would make your fans proud and not even consider Windows computers!

Sincerly,

I'll always have a mac and got a rather nice mba but I am contemplating the new envy 15 to use as a workhorse for virtualization and to replace my crap dell D610 work laptop.

Just make sure you see it in person before you buy it. If you are used to Apple quality, you'll hate the ENVY.

I'm sure Steve could care less when his laptops command the $1000+ market. If you are happy to pay $400 for the bluray option, go for it. You can get a PS3 cheaper nowadays.

1. Why spend money on old technology when there are so many companies offering laptops with way better specs for the same if not a cheaper pricetag.

2. There is no set date as to when this update will come out, speculation yes, but nothing is locked in.

Welcome to technology. It get's outdated shortly after you buy it, regardless of the company. How often did you use your PowerBook? It's a very old computer these days; did you get $2000 use out of it over the years?

If you cannot wait, buy a computer now. Apple or otherwise.

I decided last night that I'm going to make the switch.

The plan was to upgrade the macbook to a new computer with a more reliable screen, turn the laptop to the desktop media server, and then upgrade that at the end of the year. The switch is now I'm going to buy a mac mini, use that as a desktop and then upgrade the laptop at the end of the year.

What? Windows? I don't think so (although I am curious to see if W7 is any good, still that's for work, not for home!).

youll regret that switch.
from the product quality like used materials you wont get a better then apple.

I'm thinking of the Dell Vostro v13. It's kind of like the Macbook Air in form factor, but with ports like the Macbook Pro. Oh yeah, and it's just over $500.

been thinking about this myself, but i keep coming back to the same things.

1) I already have a PC desktop and PC work laptop. The way I justify a mac laptop is it's my "personal, fun, do things other than gaming with" laptop.

2) I have Mac Software that would be wasted, Office, VMWare, CS4, etc...

3) after a full day of working with a PC laptop, it's nice taking a break with OS X...

So I'll wait...grr, f'in Jobs.

I've been a PC man up until now myself. I'd decided to go for a MBP after my VAIO died a few weeks ago because of the excellent build quality, half-decent specs and "wow factor." The problem is I need to have a laptop ready to go by Feb 22 when my University studies begin. Which means, if there's no refresh this week I'll be buying an HP Envy.

hp envy (does not have a backlit keyboard..but at 1300USD for the 15..it looks like a bargain) and the vaio z 2010...two contenders...But I hope I never get to that....cause its gonna take me a while to get past the ugly Windows and Intel stickers on these machines...

So what? If you are disappointed with what Apple offers, don't get Apple. There are plenty of other options.

Yet another garbage thread. No one cares if you wait or not.

It would not make sense to buy the current MBP at it's current price.

All I know is that if the new MBP doesn't come out in 2 weeks, I'll be getting a different computer. So really it's up to apple if they want my business or not.

I do wish I could get the new one in due time, but it all depends... So I will be staying with pc, simple as that....

A word of when the new MBP will cone out would be awesome but at this point, we don't even know when it will come out. This month or maybe in 5 months... Shoot eVen next year!

If it's garbage to you, then there's no need to reply. Let other people talk and discuss.

The new Sony Z's don't ship til mid march. You'd be stuck with outdated core2duo chips. Have you spec'ed out the new one's? It looks like they're going to be priced equivalently to the MBPs that will eventually get released until you add the $500 blue ray option.

They do look sweet though and I do love that they come with SSD standard.

Here's the link.

I'm waiting til everyone releases their Arrandale models and will choose then.

Apple needs to realise that yes, Windows 7 is still windows, but it being presented by many testers as the best Windows so far does make powerful+cheaper Windows 7 laptops seem like a good alternative for people who don't necessarily need Mac OS X. Apple had a point with their anti-Vista ads and Vista did have bad press, but now that Windows 7 is getting good press, the average consumer (Apple's main target) will think "hey, this windows 7 laptop is both cheaper and more powerful than current macbooks / macbook pros and I read that Windows 7 is actually supposed to be good. I'll go for that!"- and why wouldn't they? I understand the business advantage of selling current macbook pro's for as long as possible , but I think that at the same time, not having the operating system advantage, OSX over Windows, pronounced as much makes up-to-date hardware very important to compete.

Last year I bought a Sony VAIO FW as it was similar to a macbook pro in looks and features but at half the price.

Although extremely fast it felt plasticky, cheaply made and the colour reproduction on the LCD was useless for web work. I couldn't get on with it. I also didn't like the new 16:9 screen ratio that laptops are using now, I much preferred the older 16:10 of laptops. Reason being, when you factor in the Start bar and the title bars on screen, that lower 16:9 vertical ratio really starts to steal workspace. Consequently I sent it back and decided to wait to see what Apple will bring with their next macbook pro (with Arrandale and/or OLED). Seems I'm still waiting. In the interim I'm using my desktop PC I made, seeing as it's still Winter here. Hope Apple release something by early Spring so I can go mobile again.

I didn't notice a thread like this and since it seemed like this was one of the only threads that has not popped up yet, i figured i would start one.

I have a old Powerbook G4 that I love, but it is dying and I need a replacement. This thread is for the people that, out of necessity and/or practicality, might just make the switch from Apple to another vendor because:

1. Why spend money on old technology when there are so many companies offering laptops with way better specs for the same if not a cheaper pricetag.

2. There is no set date as to when this update will come out, speculation yes, but nothing is locked in.

If you are one of these people, which computers are you considering?

This is not a Apple hating thread, it is just a thread to discuss alternatives to people that cannot wait any longer...

If after several years of use of your PowerBook you still think that using a computer is all about tech specs, maybe you DO have to switch to a Pc ...

Instead of getting the Envy, you should get the Elitebook 8540... It meets MIL-STD 810G. It's a pound heavier than the MBP, though.

Ok that's it. I'm ordering a Thinkpad T410 and just gonna use the 10% off ecoupon. But I hope the new MBP comes out soon for you all.

IF i was making a switch....which i am not.....i would consider a Lenovo.

....don't get dell, don't get HP, don't get any of that ****.

if you want a cheap but good computer then i suggest Toshiba

if you want an amazing computer all around.....then Lenovo all the way.

if you want a lightning fast beast, then Aienware is the way to go.

in the end, I love my Macbook pro though. its simply the best laptop ever.
