Hey OP -

If you don't need OSX, nothing is stopping you from buying another laptop. Go ahead and get the best value equipment for your price point you see fit. Its what I did when I build my own computers.

I now use OSX programs, therefore EFI is necessary. I might make money with them, thus I need to purchase an Apple machine (to avoid any potential legal hassle). The only reason I'm holding out instead of buying tomorrow is the fact that the 15" might get expresscard back. Which is worth the wait, IMO, since I have equipment to use with it.

However, OP, please search the forums in future. This has been discussed to death.

Sorry to hear that. My advice is similar. In addition to saying that your font choice is interesting.

dude i literally had the exact same expression when i read that. it made me lol

You should just make the jump you don't have anything to loose. I just got a Dell xps 1647 for $1000 at bestbuy and it kicks ass. I've used OS X since beta, owned 20+ macs, and worked for Apple as a Genius. I was a huge fanboy, but the prices started to wear on me, as did the quality not like the PPC days lol. I had a unibody macbook pro and the edge on the front didn't feel great on my wrist. The worst thing that could happen is you decide how apple does it works for you. Enjoy

Lay off, guys. I'm a long-term MR member and Apple user who's considering going to a Windows 7 laptop, based purely on specs. The specs I'm looking for in a laptop just don't exist in Apple-land right now. I already have a custom-built PC that I can hackintosh easily, and then load my Macbook's OS X partition. The GPU and CPU in the current MBP just aren't good enough for me. A nice Sony or Asus 13" laptop, for around $1000, that kills the MBP in specs, may be just the thing for me. I'm waiting for 1 more month. If the MBP doesn't satisfy, I'll move on.

haha, should be interesting to see what kind of replies this thread gets. But where else will you get the most unbiased answers to a question that is borderline anti-apple.

I hope your not being serious, this place is the worst place to EVER to get an unbiased opinion.

Same here.

1. Why spend money on old technology when there are so many companies offering laptops with way better specs for the same if not a cheaper pricetag.
Does the competition offer Mac OS X? I don't think so...

2. There is no set date as to when this update will come out, speculation yes, but nothing is locked in.
...and? If there would be a set date, everyone would wait for it and Apple would lose a lot of sales.

If you are one of these people, which computers are you considering?
If I were to buy something different, I'd go for a Dell or Sony, but that's not gonna happen. I love OS X too much.

This is not a Apple hating thread
Yes it is :p

when you USE a computer, tech specs doesn't matter.
What do you need to do with your notebook that actually can't do with a MBP ?
The answer is NOTHING.

Windows 7 may be the best Microsoft operative system so far, but IT IS NOT OSX. They tried to have a "Mac experience", but they have a long run to go ....

Apple couldn't care less about Sony's ship dates.

Well they better start. With their outdated products relative to what the competition is offering, they are only hurting themselves. Especially when people are eager to spend their tax returns. It's obvious their customers are demanding them to upgrade their hardware, but Apple does things the way Apple does things.

Not to throw any more fuel on the fire, but this machine sounds pretty amazing, especially at the given pricepoint...

* Core i5 2.53 ghz
* 4GB RAM
* Dual SSDs (192 GB total)
* 13.1" 1600x900 screen
* GeForce GT 330M
* Backlit keyboard
* 3 lbs
* > 4 hours battery life
* Only ~$2000

Me? I'm not upgrading my mid-09 system any time soon, so I don't really care about the next couple of rounds of updates :p

Aren't you forgetting the Mac experience though?

Sure, there are PCs out there with better HW already. But they can't be run like the Mac can. For instance the current MBP trackpad is simply amazing, bar none. It's the best there is, and makes a big difference in the user experience. To get better HW specs is one thing. To get a better user experience is another matter.

Ok, here is the thing since you guys are obviously getting the wrong idea and immediately jumping to the "oh, if you're not happy with mac then leave, we don't want you here" like i just talked about your mother or something.

I love my mac and it has lasted me a very long time. I like OSX and I also use Windows 7 at work. Do I prefer OSX? Yes, I do. So, in no way was i ever saying i am sick of mac and "want to leave" or "made my decision" like a lot of you people are saying.

I am just weighing my options because, like most of you, I feel like spending money on old technology is a bad decision right now and I don't really have the luxury to wait months for the update. I made this thread here (macrumors) because, since you guys are mac users, I wanted to get an idea of some alternatives that someone coming from a mac would consider. I am not hating on mac and I would actually like to stick to mac, but with the fact that there is no sure sign of a update combined with the numerous alternatives that give you a pretty good bang for your buck, I figured i would get an idea of some OSX alternatives out there.

I apologize for hurting people's feelings so much..:eek:

VAIO Z looks hot indeed. I'm on the same boat with mid-09. I thought about switching to Z many times but I'd miss Mac OSX and 7-hour battery life. I wish Apple allows Sony to run OSX.

The vaio Z definitely looks like a good alternative, maybe a little pricey for me. Anybody have any experience with the vaio F?

Wasnt the Vaio Z meant to have 3G connectivity built in? I cant remember :eek:

Verizon 3G is an option but I believe it is at an added cost to build in. Watch Apple partner up with AT&T for 3G connectivity. What a bad decision that would be. iPhone, iPad, now MBP? Apple will single-handedly destroy AT&T's network.

Boy, it's a miracle any of us are productive at all, forced to use the MBPs that have been just fine for years instead of a piece of vaporware.

I know right, the nerve of some people to even consider alternatives to not only the absolute best "holy grail" of computers out there, but the lifestyle that comes with it. :apple::apple::apple::apple:

But the point I'm trying to make is that if you really don't care what OS you use, what's stopping you from switching?

If it's all the same to you, nobody's forcing you into any computer or lifestyle, whatever that means. Seems like you just want to create drama and pretend to be forced into something unwillingly, which just isn't reality. If you're sooooo tortured waiting for an i7 MBP, vote with your wallet and be done with it rather than whining on the internet.

If you're so "anti-Mac lifestyle," why haven't you already switched? Again, nobody's stopping you.

As i mentioned numerous times, Prolene, is that I am simply seeking alternatives because, unlike some people, I don't know how much longer I can wait for this update. Create drama? yes, that is it. You got me..

Bottom line, though you diehard mac people like Prolene won't believe me, is that I want to stay with Mac, but I may not be able to stick around for the update. Hence, i made a post on a mac forum consisting of, people that use macs, to maybe provide some insight on some possible alternatives considering my situation.

As far as the lifestyle thing goes, I just never could have imagined that I would be hurting people's feelings by even discussing switching to a PC haha. So it just makes me think there is some sort of "once you have a mac, you are stuck in the lifestyle." To me, it is a computer that allows me to work and generate revenue. Do i want to stay on OSX? I do.. Am i going to wait months for a new update to come out though? probably not..

And what's making you unable to wait for it? Are you unable to earn a living because you don't have a Core i7 MBP?

If there's not some real reason that you're unable to wait for an update, this is all just drama. Waiting for an updated MBP is NOT life-or-death. It's a minor annoyance for geeks like us who actually care about this kind of thing.

I can still use Office, OsiriX and Aperture just fine on my 3,1 while I wait for the update, knowing that there are people in the world with real problems.

I wish i could answer that question, Prolene. But, the truth is I am here just for drama. You caught me..

So this is so important to you that you need to start a thread about it, and you're not even willing to say why waiting for a new MBP is so unbearable? Hmm...
