Lack of dedicated gpu on 13" and base 15" is a bit of a joke at the "Pro" level. Combine that with deleting the expresscard slot and replacing it with an SD port on the 15" is pretty silly.

The 17" is the only "Pro" model left...and over the past couple years it's gone somewhat "Semi-pro" IMO.

I'm still trying to figure out how rebranding the Aluminum Macbooks as Macbook Pros affects the OP's use of his Macbook Pro? It's a name for christ sake.

It's what's inside that matters, not the stupid name.

Going back to the car analogy. If BMW rebranded the 3 series as a 5 series model, would that affect the use of your "true" 5 series? If they changed none of the features of either car, except the name, the functionality certainly doesn't change.

If you feel like the line is "cheapened," then that is your problem.

Wow.....

You know your a tool bag if you think that having a MBP makes you better than everyone else.........

You know your a tool bag if you think driving a BMW makes you a better than everyone else........

I myself use a MBP and drive a Audi so I'm not hating on nice things, but I don't consider myself better than someone who uses a PC and drives a Civic.....

You really should get over yourself......

Other than the badge of honor that comes from owning a Pro (for those dicks who buy it as such), the line between the MB and the MBP is gone; essentially Apple no longer sells a professional laptop, just variations of the MacBook.

Gizmodo has a decent post about it as well, although some of their reasonings are a bit misguided. when-pro-doesnt-mean-pro-anymore.

its kinda true though. Pro is no longer pro, its just a name now.

When has it ever been a legitimate label in retail instead of just a distinguishing title?

Labels labels labels, im 17 and know they mean nothing, how old are some of you complainers here?

I kind of agree with the OP.

9400 is brilliant for what it is. But a MBP without discrete graphics just doesn't feel right to me. and I don't consider 1280x800 worthy of a Pro label either.

It was a good business decision for them though, they will definitely sell a lot more computers with this line up than the previous.

computer becomes pro is its used in such manner

But to be used in "such manner" it need the ports and graphic card to support "pro" use.
That is not the case anylonger.

I don´t care what they call it, I buy the tool I need.
When the Unibody came out, I had been waiting to get a new MBP, but it didn´t suit my needs, so I bought the previous model to get what I wanted (2 FW ports and matte screen)
I would appreciate if they stopped stripping the MBP for usefull items

You mean a non-glossy production-worthy color-accurate screen? On a machine with Firewire? (ok, so the Firewire is pretty much a dead issue now).
Yes, i think that the best industry standard should be available(as an option, of course!): in particular, a matte color-accurate high-res screen(look at Lenovo). One of the reasons - it takes much longer for the eyes to get tired with a good screen. I do some LaTeX formatting for my papers, so high-res would help to keep few windows open at the same time.
Moreover, some people argee to pay extra for knowing that they get a flawless product - which is checked thoroughly before putting in the box.
To make the long story short, consumer-oriented strategy does not mean you can not make profit in the premium segment.

Stop being a snob and elitist. It is great that more people can afford mac and apple computer since more people could experience how great it is also it would mean cheaper computer for the rest of us. Also a computer is just a tool and if you are really a pro then you would have a power desktop already and not only work using a notebook computer.

notebook computer has too much compromise to really do real pros stuff anyways.

I can agree with needing a discreet video card (at least the option for one) in the 'pro' model...

But, eh, my D80 uses SD cards...

wow, this is why i avoided apple for past 20+ years. the elitist bandwagon is staggering...

The reason why Apple dropped their price is due to the economy and the collapsing of the US dollar.

When christmas hits people are going to be hit hard with reality setting in when they cant afford to buy presents but scrounging for food.

Anyway, I'm surprised Apple dropped so much in the price. The unemployment is really around 16% and its heading towards 25%-30% by the end of this year and early next year.

Basically even the Chinese dropped using the US dollars, Russia already dumped the dollar and using the Ruble, and Brazil, Russia, India, China (known as B.R.I.C.) already began dumping the dollar and doing business with each other and wont accept the us bonds.

By end of the year or sometime next year, there will be hyperinflation in America and it will end up like Argentina... Get prepared people! Wake up!! Buy food! Stock up.

Is that you Chicken Little?

I really have no problem with the 13" being called a MBP. What I have a problem with is that the 13" is nothing like a MBP. It has a horrible display/resolution and no dedicated video card (the 9600 really). If they made the entire MBP line with the 13" having 1400x990 with 9600/9400 and the 15" with 1680x1050/1920x1200 would be great. So basically, make the MBP line "Pro"

Only beef i have with it is in regards for the newbies and newcoming mac users and how the mac series is sorta a hodgepodge of branding/versioning/naming. If i was new to mac, I'd have no idea whats going on in the 13'' range without doing some research (what kind of american does research when buying?!).

Reminds me of the nvidia period when they had the 8800 series g92 g80 mixed in with the gtx gs gts and 9800 series with all just a mesh of info and delineations that needed research to weed out... well its not that bad..

What's horrible about the display..? Resolution isn't the best I agree, but the display is fantastic.

Well the 15" MBP doesn't have discrete graphics in its base model either.

Apple has really dumbed down the meaning of 'Pro' over the last few years, but I don't really see the big deal. If you feel the need to show others that you paid a premium over them, then go with the 17" MBP. You can finally be one of the cool kids with the BMW 7 series AND a 17" MBP! Having a 17" MBP, regardless of whether you use the specs or not, automatically makes you better than the person who shelled out $1200 on a 13" MBP

I don't really understand why the OP wants to have the 13" MBP users to be inferior. Apple has built a uniform lineup with a stunning aesthetic design, and they differentiate by the specs. The specs. The specs are why we use and buy our computers, not because they look good. Sure, Mac's look f^cking awesome, but I wouldn't pay an extra $500 to jump to the 'Pro' solely because of its aesthetics.
