I just finished building my brand new Hackintosh recently!

Everything seems to work great, and it screams! I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard on it. Audio works, ethernet works, USB works, Firewire works, no problems at all!

Did you split your home directory off to a hard disk drive or is everything contained within the Intel? If I do end up going hackintosh and splurge on on an SSD, my budget would probably only limit me to a small one for just the system files and apps, so I'm curious if people have been successful keeping their home folder on a separate drive.

I just have an 80 gig Intel SSD drive, and I installed everything that was important on it - Snow Leopard + home directory and some other important apps which I use a lot.

I have terrabytes of extra space on other drives, so everything else which needs a lot of space goes on there, while the SSD boot drive mainly contains the essentials.

If i were to build a hackintosh, would it be worthwhile buying a smaller SSD, about 30-40 ish to put on essentials such as OS / important apps, and then buying a larger HD for other things such as uni work / music?

For me its not worth the cost to have a small yet super fast drive. I'd rather spend that money on a better gfx card or something. If you value speed more than capacity and price then go for the SSD. Its not really a good or bad idea in general, it all depends on your usage. Spend a day or two really noticing what you do on your computer and how a faster drive will affect it.

Thanks for the advice.

I've been thinking about what im going to put in mine, and so far this is what i have...

CPU - Intel i5 750

Mobo - Gigabyte P55M-UD4

GPU - Sapphire HD 4870 512 MB
OR
GigaByte GV-N98TSL-1GI Silent Cell

RAM - G.Skill DDR 3 1600

And i was going to put it in a powermac g4 (or g5 case if i can find one cheap enough)

Havent decided on HD whether im going small SSD + large HD, or hybrid, or just HD. And havent decided on PSU either.

If there is no Mac Pro update by the end of this month I plan on building a similar setup to tide me over until it is updated. I just started researching hackintoshing.

I understand a P55 board is easiest to set up but does it have to be a Gigabyte board? It seems like most people use Gigabyte mobos. What about an ASUS P55 board? My only other issue is Wifi. Need to research which Wifi cards are supported.

I need a gfx card for a hac i am working on. I got a gateway tower given to me because the integrated 6200 chipset died. Everything in the machine works perfectly in snow leopard, i just need to get a gfx card.

Any suggestions for the cheapest card that will support QE/CI? Performance is a non-issue as i'll just be using it to record vocal tracks with. Its kinda a nice machine for that because it has one giant 120mm fan that never spins fast enough to be loud.

Anyway, tl;dr:
I need the cheapest QE/CI gfx card i can buy.

Alright, I have a MacBook Pro and it came with a Snow Leopard disc so don’t worry, I have a retail copy.

I have an old (old because I don’t use it, only a year or two old really) Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop and I decided I wanted to install Snow Leopard onto it for various reasons including boredom.

I was following this guide: http://bit.ly/1S1Gk2

I copied everything to the flash drive correctly and that’s about where it ends so far for me.

My laptop doesn’t have the same BIOS setup as the computer used in the instructions but I was told that that shouldn’t matter much. Otherwise here’s what happens:
I’ve set my BIOS to boot from USB first.
I then plugged in my flash drive to the laptop and start it up. It comes to this screen and just sits there:
It’s a black screen with the following displayed:
boot0: GPT
boot0: testing
boot0: testing
boot0: done
And like I said, it just sits on that screen.

I’d really like to know how I can fix this. If someone could post step by step instructions for how to do the BIOS that would be greatly appreciated. The BIOS says InsydeH20 at the top of the screen.

I’m not sure what other information I can provide so I’ll end it here.

Please help me get this done because I really want to put this old laptop to use but I want to get OS X on it first for easier use.

Thanks for any and all help!

As I mentioned above, it's allegedly possible to split off your home directory to a separate drive, so you can have just your system files and apps on the SSD. The ability to do this is within the Accounts prefpane, though I've not actually seen it done in person.

I was going to sort out wifi and bluetooth after the build. Either get a card, or one of them usb mini things

Be careful with your wi-fi/bluetooth selections, as many off-the-shelf parts won't work.

There are reports of this $2 bluetooth adapter working. For wi-fi, you can piece together your own card that should offer native OS X support.

I need the cheapest QE/CI gfx card i can buy.

Cave Man's suggestion of a 9600 is solid, though a 9400 should work as well for your purposes and save a few bucks.

I'm pretty sure that a disk that comes with a laptop is a specific version of OSX for that model. IE: it's actually NOT a 'retail' copy.

All of the guides I've used for Hacks specify that they only work with the actual retail DVD, not the model-specific disks.

This could possibly be your problem. (Other than that you're attempting a laptop install, which unless using specific hackable models, is often an exercise in hair-pulling.)

10.6.4 broke my Hackintosh

I have 3 HD's in my Core i7 Hack. One for Windows 7, one had 10.6 and the other had 10.6.2, all Vanilla installs. Everything worked great, and it is fast.

The installation of 10.6.4 broke the sound and the Internet video, and 10.6.3 did the same to the other HD. Regular video works, just the Internet video does not work. Sound does not work at all. Downloaded the latest version of Flash, but that did not help.

GeekBench scores in 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 are about 500 points faster than 10.6.2 and 1700 points faster than 10.6.0.

Anyone have any ideas about a fix other than re-installing 10.6.2?

I just connected my USB headphone knowing that the sound would work, but was surprised when the video also worked. I am confused about the video.

Flash doesnt work without an audio output, so you'll have to get that working to use Youtube, etc.

Theres a 90% chance that you just need to reinstall the kexts you used for audio before. The update may have overwritten them with stock apple kexts if you use S/L/E for your kexts.

Thanks for the info that relieves me from seeking a video solution so I can concentrate on audio.

The kexts I used for my Hackintosh reside in the Extensions folder inside the Extra folder that is installed on the HD, not in S/L/E.
Those kexts are:
fakesmc.kext
IOAHCIBlockStorageinjector.kext
JMicronATA.kext
LegacyHDA.kext

I see that AudioAUUC.kext located in S/L/E was dated the same day that I upgraded.

Right now, I am not sure what to do.

Have you tried using VoodooHDA? I use it and it works great for me, though there are tons of different builds so you may have to try a few. It must be installed in S/L/E, but it wont be overwritten seeing as apple doesnt have a voodoo kext to overwrite it with.

I've attached the x64 voodoohda i use. My audio chipset is ALC888, but voodoo works on almost everything. Use KextHelper to install or just make sure you set the permissions correctly.

I did it, but I got a KP. Restarted 3 times but had a KP each time. Booted from the other HD and removed VoodooHDA. Next I will reboot to see if I get a KP.

Edit: After removing the above named kext, a reboot was successful.
