Strange about OpenOffice. I wonder if there are other machines that have this issue. Watch for memory leaks from Rosetta - they tend to occur over time and the only solution is a reboot. You ought to be in good shape with that 2 gigs.

Yes, it sure it. :)

Heck, just fire up Handbrake. It'll push your computer to the max, provided you only have four or fewer cores. :)

Only encoding to x264 every maxed my four cores using it all the others never did. For the X11 I seem to remember reading somewhere that Apples implementation of it is broken and you needed to use Xquartz I think it is called something to search on anyways if I'm not correct..

OpenOffice

I use OpenOffice on my Windows computers even though I have MSOffice. The reason is that I can transfer any type of the Neo/OpenOffice files back and forth between my Macs and my Windows machines seamlessly. Previously I used MSWord on Windows & Mac, and I had to jump through hoops to re-format the files every time. Please don't offer solutions since I am very satisfied with my arrangement.

OpenOffice with X11 worked fine on both of my Blue & White G3 Mac towers, but it was slower than NeoOffice on the same computers.

Even Photoshop CS ran sufficiently fast on the 400MHz Blue & White G3 for modifying the pictures taken with my Canon 8 megapixel digital camera with a 12X optical zoom. Photoshop Elements on my Windows XP Compaq with an AMD Athlon 64 processor of 2.41GHz and 1.5GB RAM will not even crop a photo. It just uses all the memory and then hangs. In those cases, I had to use my trusty G3 tower with 768MB RAM, and the crop effect was done in the blink of an eye. My laptop with an Intel Core2Duo and 2GB RAM works great for photos. My Hackintosh works well with my PPC version of Photoshop using Rosetta.

There's an OpenOffice 3 Beta out that doesn't require X11...

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded OpenOffice 3 Beta, and it works good. Even a little better than NeoOffice.

This Hackintosh works much better than I thought it would. No longer waiting for a Mini upgrade or a Mid Mac tower unless it has awesome specs for a reasonable price.

just gonna bump this cos I'm looking into building one myself. Any updates on this?

What about updates on spec? Ta:)

just (literaelly an hour ago) FINALLY got my PC working with leopard 10.5.4

its running amazing.

CPU: E4600 (clocked at same rate for the moment)
GPU: 8500GT 512mb
RAM: 2gb 800mhz (only runs at 667mhz on osx for some reason)
HD: 500gb seagate and 80gb IBM
Booting: winblows xp, leopard on 500gb seagate; winblows xp on IBM.

running perfectly. using it as my folding machine, media converter (handbrake ftw and anything else. might install final cut to do my videos.

short video of it here as proof.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX8qJz1OBYY

anyone know how to get the temperature readings properly? it can only see the HD's, no CPU's nor fan speeds.

looking to upgrade to a E8500 :)

Mine only reads the HD temps as well and also only shows 667 on 800 RAM

have you tried streaming content over itunes?? my playback is very choppy over gigabit ethernet.. i guess i need to find the right ethernet drivers?

I have gigabit in my whole network and it performs fine with the correct drivers. My NIC card was worthless without the drivers (no response at all).

Just google your mobo with insanelymac.com and see if anyone else has had the same issues. The driver installs are fairly simple

Get the drivers for your graphics card too, they will help. It takes about 10 seconds to register for the forums on insanelymac.com

If found out that I have a Sigmatel 8384 sound card. I can't seem to work out the next step?:confused::confused:

Perhaps by using this work around to enable unsupported chips if using Temperature/Hardware Monitor.

Code:
You can enable inaccurate temperature display for the affected processors for testing purposes. However, we don't recommend nor support this:

   1. Ensure that the driver for extended x86 support is installed and quit the application.
   2. Open a Terminal window and enter one of the following commands:

When using Hardware Monitor:

defaults write com.bresink.system.hardwaremonitor EnableCoreTempReadingsForCPU10670 1

When using Temperature Monitor:

defaults write com.bresink.system.tempmonitor EnableCoreTempReadingsForCPU10670 1

To return to normal operation, quit the application and use one of the following commands:

defaults delete com.bresink.system.hardwaremonitor EnableCoreTempReadingsForCPU10670

defaults delete com.bresink.system.tempmonitor EnableCoreTempReadingsForCPU10670

If using iStat Menus then that has never worked for the CPU temps.

Google with site:insanelymac.com as the last search term or if willing to spend some money Ebay searching on either Griffin iMic or FireWave if you having working fire wire port. I use both and they work great got the iMic for ~$15 the FireWave ~$50 landed at my door.

ok having the wierdest problem..

when i turn on my hacked computer, the screen is blue, as if its on the loading screen..

however, if i got onto my MBP and open remote desktop i can log into it and see the screen!!!! how bizarre!!!

yes i have changed res's and refresh rates right down to 640*480.

ive reinstalled with the same drivers as i normally use (8500GT so i use the nvidia 512mb thingo). im running aitkos v4 which is the latest one.. pretty confused

I currently have a Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz running at 3.2Ghz (4GB Ram, 820GB Hard Drive (1 x 500GB and 1 x 320GB), Radeon X1950 Pro) and I am thinking of upgrading slightly - maybe to quad core and better graphics and stick leopard on it.

I have messed around with hackintosh' before (about 3 years ago), but I've heard things in the OSx86 world have improved massively since then so may give it a go...

I would say though, that this would only ever be as a temporary move until I get an iMac or Mac Pro (would only buy one just as they're updated so could be waiting til Jan 09)

Moving to a quad core only gives you bragging rights. There are not many software packages that can utilize more than 2 cores. Those that do are quite expensive. To find out more about Hackintosh, Google OSX86 project. There, you will be able to see if your mobo is compatible with the OSX86 process.

As I do video editing, the quad core would be more than just bragging rights :)
