Bought a Gigabyte EP45-DS3R and a Q6600 (no overclocking for me yet), tried using a Chameleon/Boot132 tutorial and got absolutely nowhere. The system would hang indefinitely before the setup process even started.

That is what I have in my machine it works great I would think there must be something wrong with the BIOS setup or as has been mentioned the image your using. If you have an external drive handy I would just do an install onto it using your retail disk then get the dsmos.kext, modified AppleACPIPlatform.kext for reboot/possibile shutdown fix and AppleSMBIOSEFI.kext version 28 mac pro along with the Chameleon boot loader. Once you have these four copy the .kext to the external drive's Extension directory then install the Chameleon to the partition and it should boot without problems on the machine. Now when booted on the machine open disktil partition the new machine disk like you want it and choose the restore option using using external as source internal as target install the boot loader once completed rebooting to the internal drive.

While you were installing you would have wanted to download the combo update for 10.5.5 to install it when done with base system and then deleted the AppleEFIRuntime.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext and AppleThermal.kext. If your fortunate enough to have put an 8800gt in the machine I can provide you with a com.apple.Boot.plist that will give you QE/CI fully supported. For audio you need the HDA Patcher plus a 889a codec dump file and if wanting time machine then you need a modified IONetworkingFamily. That is pretty much it the machine should boot only with the SMBIOS, dsmos and boot loader installed having deleted the already mentioned .kext.

a cheap freezer pro 7 and one case fan should be all the cooling you need for a
q6600 running @ 3.6 gHz.

My system is still running great.

sad to see this thread is still overrun by petty bitching tho..

i try the 132 boot, but it did not work for me, my system would start to boot then [blinking] cursor. ill try again using your method.
i have kalyway 10.5.2 install new up graded to 10.5.4 want go to 10.5.5 but when i sudo -s i get this error [must be setuid root] any idea.
this machine runs so sweet ive not been on windows in a while i,m new to osx
and my 20 intel imac is still sitting in a corner cause i,m not paying apple $900
to replace the broken display i love this thread irie.

That seems like your sudo binary has incorrect permissions. What does this command show you when run it in Terminal?

Code:
macuser2525s-mac-pro:~ MacUser2525$ ls -l /usr/bin/sudo
-r-s--x--x 1 root wheel 211232 Sep 23 2007 /usr/bin/sudo

You may want to open diskutil and repair the permissions on your start up volume to try and set things right if you do not see the s in the output above.

That sucks most manufacturers seem to want an arm and leg to repair their machines out of warranty Apple is no exception there.

You need to run the command I show in that post namely type in then hit enter key.

Code:
ls -l /usr/bin/sudo

And if in sbin as you say then.

Code:
ls -l /usr/sbin/sudo

When it comes time for me to get a new computer, I will build me a Hacktosh and buy a eeePC (mine will a eeMac, though :D) or whatever new netbooks are out at the time for computing around and about.

So I will have two Hackintoshes!

Of course, if Apple sells a netbook in around 4 years time I will one of those if the price is right!

It all depends on what happens over time, really, but thats my general plan for now. :)

Here's one for you lot:

Code:
sudo rm -rf /

then toddle off to your local Apple store ;)

My nearest Apple store is in another country. I can't quite toddle off there.

Although as for your little 'hint', why don't you try it yourself and tell me how it works out for you.

Oh what a wonderful, and diversionary answer! :D. Yeah, I'll go try it now huh ;)...

That just flew way over my head; but so far I've used two different BOOT 132 isos (one recommended on an insanelymac thread), both had the same problem. I tried Kalaway and had the same issue, but this one went through the install and then would give me a corrupted screen image,

What could be wrong with my BIOS? They're at the highest setting and that ACHI (or something like that to do with SATA) is enabled, no luck so far.

I'm a bit surprised at my bad luck actually, you have people installing OSX on all sorts of random hardware and I followed hardware compatibility lists to the part and I can't even get it working using the "easy" way.

It's a hard knock life my friend. I had to disable USB 2.0 on one of my builds. This wasn't mentioned anywhere in the "easy" install guide. You might just have to turn BIOS settings on and off until you figure it out

*I* am a sudo:

sudo = "Super - User - DO" (IE; do this task as a super user)... and I'm a super user (yeah baby, coz I actually use a Mac! :p) and I do... a LOT.

Anyhow... you don't quote the OUTPUT from Mac to user - IE:

WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.

To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

Password:

You simply give the commands necessary for the user to input!.

Well, first Hackintosh experiment. Apple more or less forced my hand by providing no multi-monitor capable systems (and I mean multiple independent monitors) except the Mac Pro.

Bought a Gigabyte EP45-DS3R and a Q6600 (no overclocking for me yet), tried using a Chameleon/Boot132 tutorial and got absolutely nowhere. The system would hang indefinitely before the setup process even started.

Bit put off really, I bought all my hardware following a compatibility list and known working configurations. Guess it's just a dice roll, I'm going to give Kalyway a try (I do have a legal/retail leopard disk if that's of any conciliation to the die-hard anti-OSx86 crowd), if that doesn't work them I'm just SOL Always been meaning to give Ubuntu a try.

Yeeeeeaaaah....... I've never had any issues out of my "sawtooth". I think when I scrape together a little cash, I'll be configuring a new Pro.

Haha, I hear you. If I had the cash for a Pro, that's what I'd have.

BTW it's called "multi-quote" my newbie friend :)
