I returned my new 42mm SGS on Watch OS 1.0 back in May mainly due to price vs features.

This week I started looking around the second hand market I picked these up this morning:
42mm Space Grey, boxed with black original strap and also the Product red strap, also boxed.
Paid £250, RRP £339+£39 = £378.
38mm Rose gold sport with lavender strap.
Paid £240, RRP £299.

Combined I saved 28% off the Apple RRP in the UK, they have 11 months warranty remaining and with watch OS 2 I'm happy.

In all honesty I do think Apple got the pricing wrong with this device, I wonder if the RRP was £249 for the 42mm Sport and say £229 or £199 for the 38mm Sport people would be returning them?

Absolutely right. For $199 I would not have returned mine. It would have allowed me to buy a strap I like better and I would have had more patience to wait for Watch OS 3 hoping the interface would be more refined. Things I liked about the watch: aesthetics, discrete haptic feedback for notifications, ability to use voice to reply to texts while driving, Apple Pay. Would gladly have paid $200 for those features - $400 + including Apple Care, there simply is no justifying that purchase in my eyes.

Mind saying where you were looking? Would happily pay around £250 for a 42mm sport.

Gumtree, localised to my area 30 miles in search. Think my luck came in!

Cheers. A few around for £280-300. Can you haggle?

Edit: checking prices the 42mm sport is £264 from Apple Japan. Am there in December so might get one there.

I guess it just depends on expectations. I only ever say the Watch as a replacement for a regular watch that gives me an easy way to check/screen calls, texts, emails, and a few other things like the weather. I also wanted basic health tracking functions.

I want this just not for $350-$400 + .

Around the $200 range would be perfect.

Sold my apple watch fairly easily on CL for the price I paid for it minus some of the cases I bought.

If apple comes out with an apple watch without so much of a luxury tax I may come back.

I bought a SGS 42mm about 10 days ago and returned it after a week because I loved it! Bought a SS 42mm on eBay with Applecare and leather classic band and am quite happy now. It does as much and more than I expected and looking forward to see where it goes. I don't expect an updated watch from Apple any time soon.

People say that about a lot of stuff... Think a lot would love to own a BMW or Merc as well, if they could get it for half the price :)

I actually own both.

Just kidding but my director does and he sold his Apple Watch for the same reason.

But I've seen deals for Apple watches lately for close to $200. I think every would agree that they'd rather spend less for the same product unless you're the extremely pretentious type.

I just returned my 42mm Apple Watch Sport to Best Buy. While doing so the clerk asked me why I was returning it and I kinda had to think for a minute. I liked having it. I like getting notifications on my wrist. I like the information that was available simply by lifting my wrist. But the answer that I keep coming around to (why was I returning it?) was that it just didn't feel like it was worth $400. I can't explain it. I don't know why. I'm not exactly in the 1% but the $400 wasn't that big of a deal to me. The watch just didn't seem worth quite that amount. I'm also having a little buyers remorse regarding the purchase of my iPhone 6S but that's for another thread. Anyway, just my two cents.

Going back to the old Casio Digital broc? lolz.

I sold My 42mm SS Black sports band as soon as I saw that apple would off the Black SS with a sports band. I ended up selling my SS for 500US which wasn't too bad, I did not expect to get my money back at all and it sold really fast.

From the time of the announcement I wanted the Black SS but did not justify the 1100 price point to purchase it with the SS Band. I almost did a few times but in the end I was happy with the purchase.

Great choice. Love the black SS myself - chose it and paired with 3rd party link SS black bracelet as the Apple version was just too expensive

I sold my Apple Watch because it no longer felt like I was wearing $400 on my wrist. The more and more I used it the wow factor wore down. Whenever a message popped up, I had to pull out my iPhone. Whenever a snapchat pulled up, I had to pull out my iPhone. Whenever an email popped up, I had to pull out my iPhone. Whenever at a party or out in public someone would ask what does it do, and I couldn't come up with a solid answer. On another note if anyone has any recommendations as far as a really good metal watch under $200 let me know.

This was my main gripe. Everything still required me pulling out my phone so then came the question, what's the point.

OAN, Invicta make some pretty solid watches under your price point as well.

Any WIS (watch idiot savant) will tell you that Seiko is one of the best options out there for under $200 (and they make watches from under $100 to over $100K+.) If you want a dive watch, look for the Seiko SKX007. If you want another style, look at the Seiko "5" Series.

As someone who has been owning the watch for the last two months and really likes it (I came around), I agree with everyone here that it is currently priced way too high. The $349 price to entry for a 38MM Sport is really steep. Getting "taxed" $50 for having bigger wrists is counter-productive, too.

I have received numerous comments from family members, friends, strangers, and even my doctor about my watch. Almost all of them say that they would own one, but it's too expensive. Pretty much everyone in this thread who returned their watch did so because they couldn't justify the price.

I think that Apple needs to learn from the market's reception and slash the price on the Sport. I don't see the watch exploding in sales anytime soon, no matter how many new bands they release every couple months, unless they do this.

In my opinion, the watch would be selling like crazy if the entry price was $199 for both the 38MM and 42MM Sport model. There is so much potential to upsell users on bands and accessories (which most likely have very wide margins) and even an iPhone if they don't have one already.

Also, I think that the SS model's price is pretty reasonable as is. Maybe drop the price a tiny bit and focus on selling more limited edition lines like Hermes. It's a premium product and that price range is pretty good IMO. Obviously dropping the Sport's price so much would cannibalize SS sales, but as a SS owner, I can tell you that I bought the SS model because I liked the SS finish more than the Sport's. It's dressier. People who buy premium products like this tend to justify the price no matter what.

Also, maybe I'm wrong about all of this. I mean, Apple probably knows a thing or two about pricing their products and they're probably not in a position to actually ship a bunch of watches yet because the demand would most likely be insane, but I think that what I've said above is the ideal scenario for the consumers.

You are talking about selling the 42 Sport at half the current price! Assuming that the $50 for a Sports band is pure profit, you'll have to get someone to buy 4 extra bands to make up the $200 difference. And you've got to admit, price conscious consumers who find $350-400 too expensive for a smart watch are the least likely to buy extra bands.

Also, does this hypothetical $200 watch have all the same features as the $350-400 watch?

I'm inclined to say Apple does know what it's doing with the pricing. Maybe next year, they'll offer the older models for $50-100 less, and that way the price-conscious consumers will have something to buy. But it's okay if not everyone buys a watch this year. The platform is still developing, and the truth is, early adopters are beta testing this thing. If those people who think $350-400 is too expensive buy one this year, many of them will probably end up returning it, because it doesn't "just work."

If it was priced at $200 to start then that would just be the price, it wouldn't be half of anything. $200 may be a bit low but $400 feels a bit high at the entry level.

I'm just saying there are reasons why the price is $400. Saying that Apple should sell it at $200 ignores those reasons.

If the Watch is like other Apple products every new revision will have more features and probably sensors in this case but would maintain the same price. If that holds true maybe some will feel it would be worth the premium price then.

But who knows, maybe newer models with additional sensors will cost more and what we have now will be the base model.

Just had another thought. The Microsoft Band is $250.
http://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-band/en-us

Do you think it will sell like crazy?

The $200- range is the going price range for products with extremely similar features. $350+ is an extremely high apple tax without much additional functionality plus if you want a "nice" band it could cost you up to an additional $100+.

Honestly if Google fit data was able to sync back to the iPhone a Gen 1 moto 360 would offer almost the exact features as the current Apple Watch aside from actionable notifications at a couple of hundred dollars less

All of that being said if you're looking for a nice smart "watch" your not looking at the microwave soft band.
