It would seem that Kristen Lee, the wife of Cliff Lee, is not enamoured of the Yankee fans.

And, as a result, "they" have passed on some $30M+, and said "Thanks, but no thanks." to the Yankees.

I like this thought process. ;)

We need to find those fans who cost us Lee.

I really think that was the excuse she used. From what I hear that whole thing was blown out of proportion. Plus the fact that CC's wife and Lee's wife are close. She sounds like a pain in the ass.

:p
I say good riddance, 7 years when he will only be good for 4 of them. He is not young.

I HATE Philly. If Lee's wife thinks Yank fans are classless, just wait till they land in stinkadelphia :p stadium prisons anyone?

Presumably she knows them already, since Lee has pitched for the Phillies and never wanted to leave.

You think Cliff Lee's wife is a pain in the ass because she didn't appreciate being heckled by opposing fans? Have you met her? Do you know anything about what she's like? You're on the verge of sounding sexist there.

You're right that it was really blown out of proportion though. Every player's wife gets annoyed at opposing fans and all of them have probably said something about it. It's unusual that it got reported, so I don't think it should have gotten half the attention it got at the time. People had pretty much forgotten about it until Lee signed with the Phillies, at which point sportswriters struggled to come up with reasons why he wouldn't sign with the Yankees. How about:

1) He's played in Philadelphia, liked living there, liked his teammates, and wished he hadn't been traded.

2) He'd never played or lived in New York and couldn't be sure he'd like it. I'm sure he talked to Sabathia about it. Maybe he just decided it wasn't for him.

3) Maybe, just maybe, he looked at his future earnings and figured that he won't live long enough to spend $120 million, so who cares if he loses out on $30 million more?

The only thing baseball fans need to concern themselves with there is that Philly will have a formidable rotation and are easily the favorites to win the NL East next season.

And I'm not sure how much the Yankees cared about how old he was. Supposedly they offered a longer contract than Philadelphia did, so that would indicate that they were willing to eat the later years if necessary. Besides, Sabathia isn't much younger than Lee and at least 50 pounds overweight. The Yankees should worry about that more than the Phillies will about Lee's age.

And just to reel it back in again, let's just all agree that it's crazy to guarantee any professional athlete any of these dollar figures. Just crazy.

If she was spit on it was by a few idiots and not every person in the building. If he didn't want to go to NY based on the pressure fine, but to say it was because his wife was heckled is a cop out and an excuse. You don't go to Philly because the fans are so great. It kind of sounds like she is high maintenance and was doing what is best for her not for him. If he was only using the Yankees to get a 7th year out of Texas why did he sign for 5. Sounds more like his wife got in his ear or he is a big phony. Did he ever say anywhere that he wanted to go back to the team that burned him?

He said that issue was overblown and it didn't come into play in making his decision. It was just the Phillies offer was close enough and he loved when he played there so he went back.

I personally wouldn't have gone back. They traded me against my wishes having no faith that I would remain loyal to the team if I liked it there. I would say, "Screw off".

I wonder if he had the Phillies on the back burner the whole time and was playing both the Yankees and Rangers.

Again, all we know about his wife's complaint was what the media reported. We have no idea how upset she actually was about it, whether she'd thought or said similar things about other teams' fans, or how important it really was to Lee's decision to sign with Philly. Calling Lee's wife "high maintenance" says more about you than it does about her. Just get over it already. He didn't want to play for the Yankees. Life goes on.

Playing the Yankees and Rangers so he could get a smaller offer from the Phillies? That wouldn't seem to make sense. I guess in the same way that every free agent plays as many teams as possible, then yeah, they were played.

Man, Lee going to the Phillies came out of nowhere. lol I was really thinking he'd go back to the Rangers. I never thought he'd go to NY. I wonder what the Yanks are gonna do now. I don't see Greinke going to NY, either. I've got Social Anxiety Disorder and if I was a good pitcher, I don't think I could handle the NY media, either.

Greinke in milwaukee is a good fit. With a healthy gallardo and addition of markum and wolf as their #4, the brewers could light something up this year. Prince's final year before free agency he's going to try to knock the leather off each pitch I'm guessing he hit's 60. Braun, Hart, Weeks, McGhee. thats a dangerous lineup. They should compete well in the central with st. Louis and Cinci.

Should be a fun year to watch baseball. Philly fans, don't get so cocky yet. You've blown it plenty of times in the past with looking great on paper :p Everyone's going to gun for stinkadelphia! :D

so after the winter meetings, any early predictions for 2011?

NL
Phillies
Brewers
Giants

AL
Yanks
Sox
Angels

So far, I'll 2nd those predictions. Pretty much what I'd say, but I think the Giants are better than the Brewers and as much as I hate to admit it, the Red Sox are gonna be HARD to beat in the AL East.

Im curious to know why some have the Braves ahead of the Marlins? The Marlins have a better rotation, albeit inconsistent at times, a MUCH improved BP, a better hitting lineup (IMO), and one of the best players in the game in Hanley Ramirez. You can talk about Heyward being a future stud, but I will throw Stanton right back at cha. This guy can rip the cover off the ball, is a future gold glove outfielder, with a cannon of an arm. The guy will hit over 30 homers this season.

I just think that as long as they can get consistency out of the rotation after Johnson, they will finish 2nd behind the Phils.

Latest rumor flying around Philly is Hammels to the D-backs for BJ Upton.I'll take that in a heartbeat :D
Peace

Dave Parker 89 15.3
Don Mattingly 79 13.6
Dale Murphy 73 12.6
Rafael Palmeiro 64 11.0

Others receiving votes: Juan Gonzalez 30, Harold Baines 28, John Franco 27, Kevin Brown 12, Tino Martinez 6, Marquis Grissom 4, Al Leiter 4, John Olerud 4, B.J. Surhoff 2, Bret Boone 1, Benito Santiago 1

Alomar and Blyleven were chosen Wednesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America after narrow misses last year.

Alomar was picked on 90 percent of the ballots. He was a 12-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner at second base.

Blyleven was listed on more than 79 percent of the ballots, above the 75 percent required for election. He won 287 games and ranks fifth on the career strikeout list.

Barry Larkin finished third in balloting, receiving 62 percent of the votes. The only other player who finished above 50 percent was pitcher Jack Morris, who was selected on 53 percent of the ballots.

Sluggers Rafael Palmeiro, Jeff Bagwell and Mark McGwire all fell below the 50 percent mark.

Palmeiro was picked on just 11 percent of the ballots. Bagwell was selected on 41 percent of ballots while McGwire was at 19 percent.

The induction ceremony will be held on July 24 in Cooperstown.

I'm glad to see that Alomar got so many votes. He suffered in reputation from the spitting incident and his last couple years were terrible, so I think a lot of people had forgotten what a great player he was. Blyleven has been borderline for a while, but I agree with inducting him too. He was very good for a long time and and his win total suffered from playing on a lot of bad teams.

The continuing lack of love for Tim Raines should be a crime. He played in the shadow of Rickey Henderson for most of his career, but stole bases at a higher rate and had a higher OBP. Apparently Montreal was invisible at the time.

I personally think that Bagwell, Larkin and Trammell are all deserving, but may not convince the voters for a while. The next couple years are going to be clogged with steroid-era players becoming eligible and voters can only vote for 10 players, so these three may have to wait a while.
