Near as I can tell, the Yankees have a payroll of $206 million. The Red Sox payroll is $162 million. So if the Yankees disappeared, the Red Sox would become the new Yankees. The Yankees/Red Sox mini-war is a major reason that salaries have skyrocketed in the last seven or eight years. Both have nationwide fanbases, own their own TV networks, and price all but the wealthiest out of their stadiums.

So a Red Sox fan complaining about the Yankees payroll is just a hollow argument at best.

I would love to see the Red Sox at least become the new Yankees of the east coast (at least) since Los Angeles proper can use a better team in blue. Let's have some other team dominate the eastern seaboard for a change.

Heck, if the Dodgers and Giants moved out west from the east coast, I will take the Yankees in LA. I guarantee we have enough people in the city of Angels to fill enough seats. We can send you back the Dodgers in trade and us west coasters can throw in Seattle, too. :)

NL East champs 4th straight year....pop the champaigne, people!

Halladay will finish the game now...bottom of the 9th...3 more outs!!!

Hold on a sec, the Nats are perfectly able to score 7 runs against the probable Cy Young winner. I don't think you've won the division JUST yet.

And that's why everyone else hates the Yankees. Other teams win their championships. The Yankees buy theirs.

I'm going to stop you right there the Yankees won there World Series with the core they had from there system Mo Jeter Posada and Andy The only big name player they had in that Dynasty was Clemens it wanst till 2000 we started with Giambi Brown A-Rod etc. so the Yankees can actaully say they did it with out the budget from 96-00

You do know the Yankee's had the highest payroll in 2000, 1999, 1997, and 1996? They had the second highest payroll (behind Baltimore) in 1998

Let's start with the first one, 1996, and see which farm system each starter came from.

1B - Tino Martinez - Seattle Mariners
2B - Andy Fox - New York Yankees
3B - Wade Boggs - Boston Red Sox
SS - Derek Jeter - New York Yankees
LF - Darryl Strawberry - New York Mets
RF - Paul O'Neill - Cincinnati Reds
CF - Bernie Williams - New York Yankees
C -Joe Girardi - Chicago Cubs
DH - Ruben Sierra - Texas Rangers

Three out of nine isn't investing in your farm system. It's investing in your free agents and trades. Obviously it works though. I'd take a championship no matter how it's won.

Braves with 90 wins, Padres (87), and Giants (89) definitely look like they are coming into a very close race down the stretch, especially if the Giants lose tonight. (EDIT: Braves/90, P/88, G/91, but it can still come down to last three game series for Padres vs. Giants. The Giants still need at least a win against a strong Padres team to clinch the West. I wish the Giants were going against a lesser team to get the title in the NL West. This has become nerve wracking.)

Please Giants, win!

This is crazy for fans of all three teams involved. My thought is that the Braves are going to make it thus leaving space only for the Giants or Padres. If the Padres do make it, then it's them who I will root for even though I think this year can be great if the Giants make it into the playoffs.

Many in the bay area have been hoping this year can the be one where the Giants return to the WS. Even if that happens, then Tampa Bay and New York as the team representing the AL? Wow, that would be tough.

But if it comes to an AL winner in the WS, then it would be nice for Tampa Bay.

padres are cooked. lost 3/4 to the cubs. one more loss and it's over for them, as i think the braves will win at least one game. and i thought the braves were finished. anything can happen in october.

Boy I never rooted so hard for KC Ever tonight man they made garza look pathetic tonight and on that note 1st place tie for the AL East and a plus for the Yankees they wont have to face lester this weekend.

The Phillies are unstoppable. I was reading an article about the probable playoff series for the Phillies and the phillies top 3 pitchers (Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels) can start 17 of 19 playoff games.

With this being highly pokssible, I think every series will go to just 5 games. Phillies will sweep in one series and the rest, will win 4-1.

I sense a parade again.

I also think the Phillies are the power in the NL.

They have a possible match with TB or NYY in the World Series and that can be a snag.

Any way one sees it, the Phillies have at least a mini dynasty of late with divisions, pennants, and a World Series. If the team stays intact, I expect to see them at least division winners or wild cards for the next several years, unless the NYY buys a few of their stars.

Maybe with the Yankees losing Godzilla will be the nail in the coffin for New York this year in the post season. It's always been the other way around when the Yankees gutted other teams by taking their stars leaving the former team pretty winless. If the Giants win the WS, I know the Yanks will try and get Tim Lincecum.

Giambi, Jackson, Martin, and too many other names that were icons here in the SF bay area were bought by New York.

Me Too...:D Red October Part Three...;)

I fully expect the Phillies to make it to the NLCS, at least--their rotation is going to be killer in the 5-game NLDS. Pity the Padres are fading fast--they were really fun to watch this year--I'm a sucker for the low-payroll teams who can win. Personally, I'd like a Giants-Twins series...but I'm sure Fox doesn't ;)

(Mariners fan whose NL team is SFO)

Think Felix will get the AL Cy Young?

No, I think it will go to Sabathia. I do think Felix earned it, but too many voters are in love with CC.

Fair bet you're right--I'm banking on the high (by Seattle team standards) national media exposure Felix has gotten on MLBN/ESPN recently to help. Also, I can't imagine he'll get much lower than 2nd from anyone who doesn't vote him 1st--which helps.

I agree if it wasnt for CC this year the Yanks would probably not even be in the playoffs or just have made it in. Yeah the Yanks will miss Matsuis bat this year but Defense wise Granderson/Gardner have been a much better upgrade and Granderson has probably been one of the Yankees hottest players the last month or so.

Yeah, Granderson and Gardner defensively have been a great addition. I am hoping we sign Crawford to truly make a great outfield with three speedsters in the dimensions of Yankee Stadium. Swisher can become the DH who can cover 1B or RF when Girardi wants to give Tex or Crawford a day off.

I don't see the Yankees resigning Berkman if they do get Crawford. We're definitely not resigning Johnson or Vazquez. I also hate Kearns. We need to ditch him. We need to push for Cliff Lee as well this off season. We also need to go and get another starter because Andy will most likely retire after this season. My rotation for next year would be CC, Lee, Andy/replacement, Burnett, and then Hughes. Jeter(duh), Rivera( duh), Wood, and Thames should be resigned.

The only reason why he will not win is he's with Seattle and also the Lost record is a killer there granted there probably not all meant to be him but still it doesn't help your causes too. Royals Your doing great by the way :)
