I'm not giving them a pass on this. It's a total failure on their part. Is this really the "customer experience" they want to provide?
Could you imagine if today was your first interaction with Apple? You'd run as fast as you could in the opposite direction.

I've been at the processing you order screen for like 10 minutes.... WAIT, I got an email. Order placed!!!

For the past hour, getting nothing but "well be back soon, we are busy updating the store.." on my pc and iphone.
Switch browsers. I was getting (and still am..) "be back soon' on Safari but it worked in Chrome.
Haven't gotten any confirmation email yet, but after ~20 minutes of trying (I was trying at around 11:45am-12:15 PST) I got to the thank you page and my card was charged.

No business budgets resources for the highest high traffic that can ever happen. You budget for reasonable high-traffic, and know that you're risking some downtime. It's called economics. You can spend an extra billion dollars for that last .000000009% of uptime, or you can call it done on your budget of half a million and go on. Obviously I made up those numbers, but you all should get my point...
Your instant gratification isn't the goal of Apple. Apple is here to make money. If the 99.99999999% of customers who aren't fanboys like most of us aren't affected, it isn't worth having idle server infrastructure.

glad I dont wait in line now. I will just make sure that if it is shipped fedex to hold at my local one, they did that when i bought the macbook pro. Worked out perfectly since I will be working on march 16th.

That happened to me, too. I don't want to pay right now and do shipping. I can't afford to do that until a week from today.
finally able to log into account and check order status. Looks like it did go through but you might be able to cancel if ordered multiple times. Not 100% certain though.
