As a first-time iPad buyer and knowing how quickly technology moves, for the extra $100 -- it was only a question for about a minute. pre-ordered yesterday and can't wait till it comes! (my wife questions if it truely was a gift for her for her b-day or if it's a gift for me in disguise)
Mine (64gb black wifi) is on it's way from EPZ, China via UPS. I signed up for UPS text updates and it says "In Transit Louisville, KY, US" I think some of the iPads may be way early. Middle of next week? According to time it left China 3.8.12 at and it's about a 17-18 hour flight. That puts it about 100 miles from me sometime tomorrow. I'm not gonna be crazy optimistic and think it's here this weekend (especially since it's a business address) but it shouldn't take any longer than tuesday to get if it is shipping normally. odd but cool if it works like that!
I think UPS/Fed Ex will hold it until the delivery date...it's not uncommon to get an Apple product a day early, but it is much less likely to get it sooner than that. It would be awesome if it happened, though...
you're probably right but last iphone i got came on thursday morning instead of friday. maybe they just wanted to get a head start on the masses of apple boxes.
that said (as devil's advocate) I find it hard to believe that fedex or ups is gonna hold packages. thought apple is big and whatnot, boxes are boxes and they're not gonna hold up their operations so apple get's their delivery orchestrated. it would screw up too many logistics in their sorting/shipping etc. the logistics are the backbone of those companies and it would probably be very disruptive to hold packages unless maybe apple pays for a special hold.
I ordered a black 64GB AT&T iPad this morning and just cancelled. I'm still unsure about color and about the tethering options for AT&T. I'll be waiting a couple days just to decide on everything. I don't need it day 1.
For the iPad 1, they had special shipping arrangements with I think DHL or UPS and they handled the entire shipping from China to the doorstep. In that case, yes, it's very easy for them to shove entire loads of iPads to a secure area and hold them for delivery. They also tend to not update the shipping records, too, because of how they are handling them. My iPad 1 on launch day still said it was in China when was holding it.
I wouldn't bet money on getting it before the 16th. That said, some iPhone 4Ss got to people early, but I think Apple will handle this similar to how they handled the iPad 1 launch.
Yeah, same trouble here! I told my wife when the iPad originally came out that we wouldn't be wasting our money buying a first or second generation. WAITING FOR RETINA! So, I can't really say it is a gift if I've been telling her "no" for so long.
Ordered two 32GB Black wi-fi at 12:45 pm today and already have my first email. Says I will get them on the 16th. We will see.

Ordered by 16 Wifi yesterday as soon as the store opened. I have the confirmation email with an estimated delivery of 3/16 but have not yet received a shipping notification.

Engraving
You know, those who had theirs engraved last time, ended up getting theirs shipped first then as well.
I seriously considered engraving mine with: "I'm only getting this engraved so it'll ship faster"
It made me chuckle to consider it.

So I'm assuming if we got it engraved, it won't ship yet, mine still shows 'Preparing for Shipment' since yesterday, which is fine by me anyway as long as it will get here by March 16.
