Got my hopes up. I preordered an iPad 64GB Wifi and a smart cover last night. Got a "shipped" e-mail, with a delivery date of March 10th, then I realized that was just for the smart cover, and that the iPad was still processing.

No. The smart cover does not cover the backside of the ipad.. that is he means

I think Radio means that because the smart cover doesn't provide protection for the back of the iPad, that it will get damaged. I don't think he meant the smart cover itself will damage the iPad.
i use a smart cover and the backside of mine is fine, you don't need a cover for the back, just take care of your stuff and don't throw it around and it will be fine

-___-. I chatted an Apple Rep before placing my order, and she said that Apple would charge my card once the order ships. So, I placed my order. Turns out, they charge once the order processes. I ran to my bank to place enough money into my account before they close (Made it in, at 4:59, close at 5) to deposit some cash.
They had already charged me, and my bank account was below the limit for about an hour or so. Hopefully my bank doesn't charge me as it is still showing pending in my statement.

Is the Apple Store the only place you can preorder from right now? Would like to avoid state tax?
It's a pre-authorization. You have no idea how much I hate pre-authorizations, especially when companies make a big deal about "we don't charge you until it ships." Well, technically you don't, but practically there is not a single iota of a difference.

I ordered as soon as the store was back up...got a confirmation email, but my 32GB Black AT&T 4G iPad is still processing...my smart cover should be here tomorrow, though. 😛

My AppleCare + "Completed" though.
I'm not sure what you'd consider early afternoon (not exactly sure where you are located), but I ordered mine yesterday at around 5:45PM EST.

Because I like the minimalistic design of it. I take very good care of my stuff and my iPad two had no back scratches with tons of use.

Ordered about 4:45pm EST 4/7: Black 16Gb WiFi, no engraving.
Status is still "Processing" on Apple track-status web-site. Received order confirmation email, but still waiting on "shipped" email.
Do you think it is possible Apple is stocking these up in warehouses in the US and shipping from there depending on a FedEx/UPS ground delivery time? So for example if it takes 2 days for ground, it wouldn't ship until Wednesday.
