Why would you want them to mesh their highest-end machine with their lowest-end machine?

We're talking headless desktops where both are languishing - if they go modular and end up somewhere in the middle we may end up with a survivable product that has better market-share and better chances for upgrades.

The key to that scenario is Apple offering compelling value when coupled with their new monitor and taking the risk that users choose their monitor due to outstanding resolution and clarity capability offered in each rendition of the modular series which means the least capable setup offers the greatest value/cost benefit - essentially they loose a little on the bottom-end if a competitors monitor is chosen instead taking the mark-up on the monitor. Also, foregoing cannibalization concerns permitting the addition of high-end graphics, SDD's, RAM and whatever else you like.

New Pro is Mini
or
New Mini is Pro?

Wasn't there a previous instance of Apple sending out surveys - and the new model was released in just another month or two? In other words, the survey fed into the ad campaign, not the hardware design.
This sounds promising: The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming, they are just looking how to advertise it!

I am a fairly recent fan of Apple, since about 2011 when I got my first tablet, and in 2014 when I got the Mini which I liked quite a bit. Don't have it any more, gave it to a family member in need in early 2016 thinking a new mini was coming (Ha! right) , and I had other hardware to use.

The thing I find upsetting is just waiting around for Apple - thinking that something is coming - and it doesn't - and delaying the purchase of a new item - that yes, is admittedly a want more than a need - just coming here and checking for news as frequently as we do.

It's like setting up a second date with someone, waiting at the restaurant for hours, the girl is saying (I am on my way, traffic jam, "this date remains important to me") and she never shows. That's Apple with the Mini in my experience.

Your new girlfriend is almost certainly coming. :D

But that analogy doesn't go quite far enough. You've gone back to that restaurant time after time for the past three years. She doesn't call to make an excuse anymore. That's because she never said she would meet you at the restaurant in the first place. She is more interested in other things these days.

Six months ago she said "of course you're important to me". And you say... "see... that proves she loves me!!" ;)

His girl is over-the-hill anyway. She was a hell of a lot prettier in 2012 than she was in 2014.

Also, in 2012 you could easily get inside her. By 2014 she sealed herself shut. It's time he move on.

The mini is supposed to be a budget, entry-level product. I have no interest in a base mini that costs $1,500.

This is a sad thought, but if Apple released a "Mac Mini Classic" (a re-release of the 2012 mini with 8GB of ram) it would crash the Apple online store.

Im kicking myself that I didn't buy a refurb back in 2014. They were dirt cheap (I believe $400 CDN). It's 3 years later and the cheapest I can find a USED one for is $500. The 2012 mini APPRECIATED in value in the 5 years since it was released. So utterly ridiculous.

IF it had NVMe SSD. It would crash the site. But needs that speed boost for sure. Also 32GB Ram also TB3, also USB C.

Just forget ... If APPLE WATCH 2 disappear without any news............. so will be mac mini :(

What Apple does with iOS devices, is that old models get cheaper every year. That way they have good price/quality ratio as long as they are sold. They should start similiar pricing with macs. Then it wouldn't hurt so much, if you buy just (year or two) before the new model is released.

I don't think it's too much to ask for Apple to provide a quad core cpu in the highest end Mac mini model. My 2011 Mini server with 2.0 Ghz quad core is getting on in age and it's time for me to start looking at other options if they're not going to provide a viable option within a year.

They really effed up when they downgraded their 2014 mini otherwise I would be perfectly content to get one of those now, even with 3 year old technology.

I will be fine moving back to a Windows PC if they're not going to provide an adequate, headless mid-range option.

If anybody could get this to run Sierra, I'd give a prize. Small Form Factor: http://www.boxx.com/products/workstations/apexx-1
That's pretty much a Hackintosh then – you can build small ones:

https://www.tonymacx86.com/buyersguide/september/2017/#CustoMac_Mini

Pick a case you like that fits this motherboard format. Invite me over for lunch and dinner and I'll set everything up for you. ;) My Big Hac only requires maintenance when a major version system update is out, so from El Cap to Sierra for instance. Dot updates just download from App Store and install.

Lol....After running from Irma and coming back to find my house in one piece :) and waiting 7 days on power and cleaning up all the debris, I took a look at this thread.

People were actually thinking a new Mac Mini was coming.

Build a hack, buy an iMac, get a Macbook or just move on. The Mini is Dead.

Thanks again for the laughs Apple.

The mac mini isn't dead. Cook just ran out of time during the September keynote to announce it. A new mac mini announcement is most certainly coming during the October keynote.

Of course you've probably heard the latest version of iTunes removes access to Apps on the Mac ... again moving the desktop further away from mainstream. It's almost like Apple needs to let iOS front-end MacOS which would be a nice position for a headless Mac that provides personal cloud services, backup, home automation and high-end media manipulation and presentation. This would suit me fine.

Apple's making a statement - come 2018 that new Mini-MacPro better be part of that statement.
