To profitably mine Bitcoin today, you need an ASIC, i.e. a custom chip that does the mining. To mine Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies, you need a powerful GPU - the AMD Polaris series is a particular favorite.
Hi Curmodgeonnette,

Love the name. Thanks for the answer. Do you think contributing to this type of effort might support anti-state, or underworld financial activities. I know that people are ‘excited’ about the new ‘currencies’, but there seems to be such mystery about who is really behind any of them. I’m sure I sound ignorant...but you sound informed on this subject (from my perspective) — since You know how to ‘mine’ it!

Maybe, maybe not.......... but still, the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

While I would like to share your enthusiasm...after all, seeing as Tim et al say they are not discontinuing the Mac Mini, it must be coming -- sometime. Will it be another year? 18 months? How long can they let it drag on? I mean, look at the state of the Mac Pro -- a vastly more expensive machine which seems to be on a similar release schedule as the Mini!? o_O

Personally I don't think the new Mac Pro and Mini situation have any similarity. Apple admitted they were considering phasing out the Mac Pro but user pressure changed their mind. So the new Pro will be a kick_a$$ machine offering bragging rights for professional users where cost is not really a factor.

That's just not the mini. :)

Something they both have in common is they are not updated often, probably due to low volumes not making it worthwhile.

I'm hoping the new Mac Pro will be something more scalable so that it appeals to a wider range of people, and so sells in higher volumes, and therefore profitable to update more often. It would be brilliant if that range came down far enough to cover the top end of the Mini market (or at least the top end as it used). This could then allow the Mini itself to something smaller and cheaper for those who just need something basic.

Another thing they have in common is that they are the only two Mac without a display, keyboard and mouse, and IMO it's the reason why they are not being updated as they should. Apple wants to sell things you see and interact directly with so you're more tempted to upgrade when the product is updated, redesigned, made smaller or lighter, etc.

For most users, if a box still works there is no reason to replace it. Slightly better performance is not something that appeals to a lot of users.

They didn't say that. "While it is not time to share any details, we do plan for Mac mini to be an important part of our product line going forward." This is a sentence which might be interpreted in all ways imaginable, from "it will be our flagship computer from January onward" to "it is always good to have something in our product line to make obsolete at random moment". But he almost certainly meant the former and almost certainly NOT the latter. Right?

Marketing ploy... Hmmm
"For all of you people out there worried about the trusted management engine running Minix that Intel installed in their Skylake and later processors; boy have we a product for you..."

I heard Tim Cook say the mini is an important part of Apple's line up and to stay tuned. That was 6 months ago. Has any news on the mini been released since?

They have been selling loads in the refurb stores over that period, which is a new thing and suggests that the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming, but who knows.

Doesn’t it really matter IF it’s coming as much as what are they going to do with it. I’m still rocking the 2012 because they botched the 2014
It doesn't matter much to me.... I'm still using a 2009 Mac Mini (base model with an extra 4 GB of RAM) because it still works fine for my humble needs.... and will probably continue to do so until the HDD or something else fails.

I think it’s boarderline immoral for Apple to be selling the Mini with outdated specs. Apple is loaded, and I think they should have the responsibility of ensuing it’s current products are spec bumped yearly.
I beg to differ re: 'borderline' - it IS immoral for Apple to be selling the Mini with outdated specs, plain and simple. They don't seem bothered by silly notions of morality (few monopolists do), but that's another story.

ok I will bite. Apple has a monopoly on what?

It's terrible that Apple is still selling a mini with outdated specs. But it's not "immoral"... don't buy it if you don't like it.

I think it is. Outdated specs mean the devices lifespan is shorter than it should be and that negatively impacts on the environment. Apple also markets itself to people who don't understand technology and just assume they are buying the latest, when they are actually buying old technology. Apple isn't struggling company who can't afford to update their product line, so I do think it is immoral.

Still using 2010 Mac Mini. It was a base model too. Now has 8GB Ram and a 250GB SSD. It still works great. Willl continue to use it until a major issue happens.

That is the only thing we are asking since the beginning of threads like this (anyway, there was an "update" in 2014, but in reverse direction).
