But the entry level mini has a fusion drive option with a 128gb SSD: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-i5-1.4-late-2014-specs.html

"By default, this model is configured with 500 GB hard drive, but it also can be configured at the time of purchase with a 1 TB "Fusion Drive" (which combines a 1 TB hard drive and a 128 GB SSD) for an additional US$250."

That is only because it was released in 2014 so Apple hasn't gotten around to downgrading it yet.

I disagree as it is just the opposite. If you look at where they make most of their money (iPhones) you see that those products are updated yearly.
Yes, because the masses are used to replacing their phones every couple of years. The VAST majority of people do not want to or care to replace their computer every year.

Redesign costs money. With an iPhone you know people will be queuing up to buy it every year (or even every 2 years). With a computer most people update every 3-7 years (at a guess), so a new model every year doesn't pay for itself in the same way.
Plus for the uneducated buying an entry level mini in 2017 means they are getting a 2017 machine, not a 2014 one!

For the educated we don't want to waste our money on older tech so we buy a different machine like an iMac or a Macbook Pro. So Apple get a greater profit.
Yes there will be some that bug out and buy a windows machine but not that many.
So the return on investment is still paying off as people buy a 2014 machine or a higher spec one verses the few that switch because they haven't updated.

Oh and the new Mac mini is almost certainly coming!

I've been testing out the new AMD Ryzen mobile chips in a HP laptop. This is their first release of the integrated chips with Vega graphics included. The Cpu portion is on average with 8th generation Intel i5 quad core mobile chips I tested earlier in the Lenovo but the graphics power is on the level of AMD RX 450 dedicated graphics.
Sure would make a great addition for a Mac Mini for casual gaming and video editing. This is a 15 watt mobile chip.:)

For those interested in what it means for Intel to partner with AMD for integrated Gpus I will include the Have benchmark.
This will give you an idea of light gaming on their integrated Cpu/Gpu and keep in mind this is their weakest 15 watt mobile chip.

This is on low settings. Medium was 55 FPS and high was 45 FPS.

And you buy a new car every year.

No, I'm not. But the same can be said for the mobile/smartphone segment.
Some people buy new phone every year (or even more often). Why is Apple updating the iPhone every year?

Apple didn't update the iMac external design in 5 years! Even the comming iMac Pro has the same exact external design (except some details because of cooling), than the 27" iMac from 2012! And if the form is okay, why should they change it? The only thing, they need to update, are the internals components. Is that really that much of asking?

Even today, it still important, what is inside. Can you imagine, you would buy a new iMac, try to surf the web or visit some videosite and it would stutter? And you just paid $XXXX+ for it.
I think you would pull your hair.

I would be interested in reading you argumented responses, what would you say, if they did not update the internals of the iMac since 2014 and they would still sell the same 3-years old components for the same price as when it where first announced.

Because that is the situation with the Mac mini.
Maybe someone can answer me the simple question, why they couldn't put in a Broadwell, Skylake of even Coffee Lake Intel CPU in the past years/months into the same "good old" Mac mini case? They didn't need to change anything external. Just update the motherboard with the actual chipset. Even if they don't include TB3 or USB C.

No, but a certain % of car owners do. And for anyone looking for a new Mac Mini in the last 3 years, have been left wanting.

But please, excuse away this pathetic state.

Why do Apple apologists always ignore this fact?

I bet no one is going to report your post as against the rules of the forum, unlike my posts previously.
Well little windowboy, and I type this knowing they are going to either edit or remove my post, unlike yours, a certain % of people who would buy a new computer every year are clearly not enough for Apple to care for. IF you don't like my answer, which is of course 100% true and accurate as I am clearly as you say an "Apple apologist", that's your problem. Not that it matters, but I am not an Apple apologist the same way you are not a window licking douche.

Because as I said in the very post you quoted (partly you quoted), because people are used to buy a new phone every year or two. Most people do not choose/want/desire to buy a new computer every year. As simple as that. Just because some do, it doesn't make it enough for them to do it.

IF memory serves me correct, that's better than my 4870X2 from about 10 years ago. Impressive.

Nice. I can’t see why you were previously reported

You totally missed my point. People don’t bye new machines EVERY year, but over the course of 4 years, yeah most do. And that is why this Mac Mini thread is so epic and pathetic at the same time - the customers Apple forgot. And you wonder why people are a little salty?

And yes, defending the lack of an update in over 1000 days is pretty much the definition of an apologist.

Home Pod release is delayed because they need to get Siri functioning at a level higher than Eliza. (more on ELIZA)
Google, Amazon and Microsoft have all managed to make moderately intelligent assistants.
Not sure why Apple can't. Maybe they keep firing any AI guy with a big enough ego to get the job done?

Because of privacy issues. They give up a ton of functionality due to not sending sensitive data over the net like the others do. Remember, Siri used to do as much or more than the other assistants did back before Apple bought it and it was an app. They reduced the functionality a lot when they took it over to make sure that it was secure.

I'm not sure how long Siri has been around, but it really can't compete with the competition. For whatever reason there has been little improvement in its abilities. Google Assistant is way ahead of what Siri offers.

No AI works well enough so I don't bother.

Assuming the hash payout rate stays the same...but even if not it’s still subsidized.

I would hate to pay your electric bill. I have 2 1070s running 24/7 that cost me $30 a month. Lol

They also serve the purpose of an extra heater for the winter.:D

Yeah my heating bill has dropped a lot. My garage is like a sauna 90 f since it is attached to the den I open the door and my den is toasty. Power bills are 400 in the winter 650 in the summer. I have a lot of gpu miners in the garage. Last count 27 gpus and one more is coming on Tues. I liked Apple I owned every model of the mac mini from 2006 to 2012. I modded and sold more then 350 of them. Ebay had a thriving Mac Mini sales of upgraded products by sellers like me. Put out of business by the 2014 design. I had switched to mining for pc earnings. Looks to me like the marketcap for cryptocoins will be over 300 billion soon. I will pop a bottle of bubbly when it passes the worth of Apple stock. I figure 2022 and it will leave Apple in the dust.

Apple is missing out on the mining craze It will burn them down the road. They should put an app on the new iPhone to let you mine something. Even if it earns pennies it is a direction they should consider.

Sorry, but I'm not buying the "people don't buy a new computer every year" argument from some apologists. Of course most people don't buy a new computer yearly, but that doesn't stop EVERY other manufacturer from releasing new models for their entire lineup every 12 months or so. There's no excuse in the world for Apple to be selling that gimped runt (the 2014 mini) in 2017.

Dell doesn't go 3 damn years between updating any of their computers. Neither does Lenovo... or any other computer company, for that matter. And these companies sell dozens of different models, all with shiny new versions released every single year. These companies started selling models with 8th gen Intel chips days after those chips were made available.

If Apple doesn't want to make a new mini, at least have some integrity and yank the gimped runt from the shelves. Selling that machine in 2017 is disgraceful. I just realized they will be selling it in 2018 too... what a farce!

Hi Philip,

*going off-topic for a moment*

I have to say that I am curious about your bit miner. I admit that I have not been paying much attention to this whole phenomenon...other than the earnings and how the basic process works to 'create' wealth.

Even after reading a decent amount about all of this, I am still unclear as to how the Bitcoin (or similar) currencies benefit anyone other than rogue states, money-launderers, drug dealers, immoral/unethical billionaires (I suppose that is an oxymoron), etc. That said, how much computer power does one need in order to make money crunching bits? Would an old quad-core Mac Mini do the trick? What exactly is needed. And how safe is this for you in terms of security?

To profitably mine Bitcoin today, you need an ASIC, i.e. a custom chip that does the mining. To mine Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies, you need a powerful GPU - the AMD Polaris series is a particular favorite.
