Over One Million six hundred thousand views here, yet Apple is abandoning the Mac Mini. I guess if they keep their mouth shut and we keep buying four year old hardware at todays prices, they have a winner after all.

How many more Mac mini’s do we need? We have the iPad and iPad Pro :p just kidding. I can see a new Mac mini being in a smaller more elegant form factor

I persoanaly feel the Mac Mini is elegant enough in it's current form. Albeit a what ten year old form? I guess at this point it would be considered a masterpiece...

It needs to be updated. If they can improve on the design fine. The current design looks great on my desktop. Paying a premium for old technology does not look so good.

Developer just need ipad pro to ssh,vi,vim ( hipster ) . Reality no xcode. You have office tool in ipad pro no need full fledge Operating System . Want more high end , imac pro 5 grand for you ? Mac mini ? why consumer need this ? ,it is not full experince at all.

but in Apple's case there's no comparable alternative - and this spot is getting old as old gets!

We want stable, predictable, build-able, fixable and upgrade-able ... Apple wants none of that "able" stuff! We're the last folks they're thinking about - "still raving about a 2012 product - we're so yesterday".

There are plenty of alternative products just as good and in some cases better than the Apple solution. Lot's of small form factor units out there, NUC to name just one, and don't dismiss Windows 10 it's more than equal to MacOS these days.

Failing that, then build your own (like I and many others have done). Good sense of achievement, little knowledge required and you the builder get to choose the spec - what's not to like?

That day is fast approaching - closely watching the next announcements. I would, in the past, say the Apple ecosystem is what binds me and their adherence to quality but with each new version of iOS and MacOS I see good things replaced for the sake of replacing and necessary legacy attributes removed in favor of things I don't want or need.

This coupled with the rising cost has exceeded my patience - fortunately the 2012 Minis are still humming which is the only reason I haven't left already.

The fact Apple made the 2012 Mini makes one think Apple can do it again - but sadly I doubt that will occur.

MAGA = Make Apple Great Again!

I think MacRumors needs a new forum under "Desktops" named either "Headless" or "Non-AIO". That's mostly what this particular thread has become.
Does “desktops” have to mean plugged in to a 120V wall outlet? Or just MacOS? I assume headless means no attached screen? What does non-AIO mean?

Non-AIO means non-all-in-one (AKA iMac). By desktop, I would mean something that you connect keyboard, pointer device (mouse, et al), and monitor to. I do NOT mean mobile devices like tablets or laptops. For example, the current Apple headless desktop systems are the Mini and Mac Pro. Yes, these have separate forums already, but both groups do a lot of discussion of where Apple needs to go in the Desktop business. With the only desktop talk coming out of The Giant Donut these days is the vaporware (hopefully not) known as the modular system I think a forum to have discussions about headless desktop systems is pertinent.

Yeah but the current thread title could be what has kept folks comin' back. There's something charming and wistful about it. Or that's how I used to see it...

I had always thought I might get a mini when I got to the point of not having to travel much and was thinking then that a mini and a 27" display might be nice. Time has gone by and I still entertain the thought, but lately just I'm just thinking that sticking with a laptop, possibly a MacBook this time around instead of MBP, and a separate display for when I want it, remains attrractive as a more flexible arrangement. And I'm not used to going where my data is, I'm used to taking it with me and not having it plugged in when it's convenient to use it away from wall juice.

Exactly! It should be possible to take the mini with you. I don’t want a super powerful hot heavy laptop or expensive iPhone, I want a super powerful MacMini with a battery controlled from cheap light laptops and phones.

Seriously... you want to charge your Mini daily or you want to watch the battery indicator drain as you transcode a file. I think you really do want a laptop because what are you going to use for peripherals and what's powering them ... hmmm

I’d use my phone to control it, or a keyboard and monitor. It’d stay plugged in charging most of the time, but wouldn’t need a UPS and I wouldn’t have to shut it down to take it with me. I could keep using it while it stayed in my backpack. I don’t want it to be a laptop, I don’t want my laptop to have to be wired to my audio interface and television, and burning my lap, or cost $3000. Separate the head from the body!

Oh yeah, wouldn't everyone want to Bluetooth the connection to the monitor but that would need an interface with a touchscreen to be really effective - the idea has circulated through my head a couple of times to be honest. Also to be honest the iPad Pro would more than likely eclipse such an idea.

No... the Mac Mini is a small DESKTOP computer. Since it was never intended to be mobile, there is no point to it having a rechargeable battery. It’s no different than an AppleTV or an Airport router.

It’s an idea without merit, and I suspect it is why Apple hasn’t done it.

I really don't think there's much interest in a battery powered Mini. In fact, this is the first time I've even seen someone mention it. Apple isn't even interested in doing a minimal update of the Mini to newer processors, I'd say the chance of getting a device like this is about zero. Just get a laptop if that's what you want, the MacBook Air can be found for well under $1000 on sale.

I was going to say – a portable Mac Mini exists, it even has a screen (although you don't have to use it), it's called a Macbook Air. No dongles necessary.

Which is not to say Air satisfies all customers' needs or is perfectly priced... even though it seems very fairly priced compared to the 2014 Minis.

Escape from the mental prisons of the past!

Wasn’t this Castanza’s problem when he was trying to save his high score in frogger?

I think you are expressing a real fringe request, that in my experience, comes around once every 25 years.

Clamshell mode can do wonders, imho.

But I wish you luck!
