It's 2018 and Apple has changed, and market has changed. If something was an unrealistic expectation, that was.

Actually, they could have the entry level with an dual core 2.3 (or something similar form the 8th generation), like it is in the 2017 iMacs and the entry level Macbook Pro. For the price of 499-599 $.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter.
For these who want, will buy it anway, for these who won't, they simply won't.

A 10 Gigabit Ethernet card on a Mini! Can we finally use Adobe Lightroom over iSCSI and get some decent performance???

Will almost certainly retain a sub $600 base model with 8GB RAM and a HDD so folks here can carry on whinging about Apple gimping the Mini.

Top end off the shelf and and custom builds will include specs and options to suit the needs of professionals and the desires of geeks after bragging rights

Just had a quick look at the event coverage, and it seems like there will could be some bragging rights for geeks with multiple 64gb 6-core mini's in an array. Looks really nice to me... far more than I expected. Bravo Apple!

But those wanting a sub-$600 base model with a hard drive better grab a 2014 Mini while they still can. :p

I think there is a model of the new modular Mac Pro sitting right in front of us, that big cube on the side of the stage...?!?

Larger than the actual chassis, of course...! ;^p

Yeah, I am also very happy for this update. :)
It is much more, than I hoped for. And also, because they updated it, not EOLed/killed it.

Hm, $2.5k for the big 6-core, 32GB and 1TB ssd. Can probably get 15-20% off, but at that point, no thanks. Will have to check how much it would cost to upgrade the smallest version to that spec if it can be done. Would rather put the money towards the next Mac Pro. 15" MBP with external monitor is probably a better investment at this point. Similar specs + GPU and portable.

I'm sitting, still... 6 cores max and 64GB... hello? Anyone home? Sure 9th gen and 8 cores was a stretch, but uhm... why bother with 64GB and only 6 cores?
It usually doesn't take long when such choices are made. I understand 6 cores and 32GB, but this is a massive mismatch. It's just an odd choice to make.
You apparently don’t use VMs.
