For $720 on Amazon you can get a bare bones NUC with Vega M graphics. If you are resourceful, for $1000 you can have a 8gb ram 256gb SSD NUC with Vega graphics for the same price as a mini....

Just to put things in prospective....

MacStadium isn’t the only data center that uses Mac mini lol. Apparently you’re unaware. That’s ok :)

Mac cloud computing is a thing.
A niche business of renting macs over the internet. Of all the data centers or server farms I have worked at, or consulted on, not one used macs. I have, in the past, run into Xserves. But after Apple pulled the plug on that I doubt anyone who got burned by that will ever consider them again.

these are the CPUs used in the new Mac mini (according to my research):

Intel® Core™ i3-8100 Processor
Intel® Core™ i5-8500 Processor
Intel® Core™ i7-8700 Processor
I think you’re dead on. I’m pleasantly surprised they used 65W processors.

Note that only the i7 has hyperthreading. The i3 is a 4C/4T and the i5 is 6/6.

CPU options are great, the hexcore is really the sweet spot in terms of price/performance. SO-DIMMs are nice - albeit that depends if the 8GB is taking up both slots or one (a $240 CAD upgrade cost from 8 to 16 is just nuts, a 266mhz DDR4 So-Dimm is $80 CAD now - that's almost a 300% markup!!).

But damn, damn damn that GPU. A 60% upgrade from a poor baseline of 4 years ago sucks. Was really hoping for Hades Canyon or even something on the lower end.

It’s definitely niche lol. I assume most data centers will have exactly zero.

The quad i3, with a 256GB SSD, and 8GB RAM, is $1569 AUD. I can get an 8th generation quad i7 NUC with the same size RAM and SSD, for $820. Hmm.
The NUC also has a better iGPU.

SSD and RAM pricing is exactly in line with MBP and iMac pricing. Was that unexpected?
I am not up to speed with pricing on other Macs. But it doesn't matter to me if the Mini pricing is in line with MBPs and iMacs. Apple may have just priced themselves out of my reach.

A 10 Gigabit Ethernet card on a Mini! Can we finally use Adobe Lightroom over iSCSI and get some decent performance???

This is lightroom we are talking about here. I moved from a nMP to a PC with 6 cores, 128GB RAM, 4 x 1TB SSD in a storage pool and a GTX 980TI (was a couple of years ago) and the performance is 'okay'. I have the catalogue on NVME SSD too and it's just a badly written program.

On the bright side, new Mac Mini does look good though. :)

It starts at $800 now! LMAO. My last Mac Mini new was $450. What a shame honestly.

So glad I sold my Mini months ago and got a 5K iMac instead.

Apple sort of expects you to use an eGPU anyway.

I've seen in two posts the statement that the new Mini can't be used as a HTPC - could someone tell me why ...

Are HTPCs still a thing?

Just had a quick look at the event coverage, and it seems like there will could be some bragging rights for geeks with multiple 64gb 6-core mini's in an array. Looks really nice to me... far more than I expected. Bravo Apple!

But those wanting a sub-$600 base model with a hard drive better grab a 2014 Mini while they still can. :p
Yup, the 2018 Mac Mini has sure plenty to satisfy folks at the pro or performance end of the market. However, those wanting a modestly priced, modestly specced machine will be disappointed. I don't see it as replacement for my base model 2009 Mac Mini, which remains adequate for most of my humble needs.

With a soldered in Apple SSD, the life of the new mini will be determined by the life of the drive. I'd rather have soldered RAM than the hard drive.
I can't see this new mini having a very good resale value years from now with the original worn out drive tagging along for the ride with no way to replace it.

Why would the SSD not last for years?

Looks like i was bang on the money with my prediction of core i3-8100 (ok not 8300)/ i5-8500/ i7-8700.

Most surprising to me is they managed to get 65W in the same small form factor. If you look at the backside the vents are much larger now though.

All in all a fantastic powerful little machine. Connectivity great too. They hit a home-run with this one.

Nothing to contribute in this post -- just wanted to know that I was thinking of everyone in the last 586 pages today, and wanted to be a part of it ;)

I see overheating issues sometimes the 2012 quad cores would overheat. Its a good model. If it does not overheat.

So buy the base with the i7 upgrade. cost you 1099 add an external 2tb ssd as a booter cost 300 1399 and add 1 16 gb stick of ram cost 150 you have a
24gb
2tb ssd
with a i7 8700

net 1650 it will drive a 4k
