A niche business of renting macs over the internet. Of all the data centers or server farms I have worked at, or consulted on, not one used macs. I have, in the past, run into Xserves. But after Apple pulled the plug on that I doubt anyone who got burned by that will ever consider them again.MacStadium isn’t the only data center that uses Mac mini lol. Apparently you’re unaware. That’s ok
Mac cloud computing is a thing.
I think you’re dead on. I’m pleasantly surprised they used 65W processors.these are the CPUs used in the new Mac mini (according to my research):
Intel® Core™ i3-8100 Processor
Intel® Core™ i5-8500 Processor
Intel® Core™ i7-8700 Processor
It’s definitely niche lol. I assume most data centers will have exactly zero.A niche business of renting macs over the internet. The NUC also has a better iGPU.The quad i3, with a 256GB SSD, and 8GB RAM, is $1569 AUD. I can get an 8th generation quad i7 NUC with the same size RAM and SSD, for $820. Hmm.
I am not up to speed with pricing on other Macs. But it doesn't matter to me if the Mini pricing is in line with MBPs and iMacs. Apple may have just priced themselves out of my reach.SSD and RAM pricing is exactly in line with MBP and iMac pricing. Was that unexpected?
I think they are upset apple removed the IR sensor in the front. Originally for “front row” which has been abandoned for years, but still nice when using iTunes.I've seen in two posts the statement that the new Mini can't be used as a HTPC - could someone tell me why ...
A 10 Gigabit Ethernet card on a Mini! Can we finally use Adobe Lightroom over iSCSI and get some decent performance???

Many thanks!I think they are upset apple removed the IR sensor in the front. Originally for “front row” which has been abandoned for years, but still nice when using iTunes.
There never was a rumored Mac Mini Pro. The rumor was a pro-focused upgrade with CPU and storage that would make it more expensive, and that’s what we got.Now the question is, is the 2018 Mac Mini the new Mac Mini Pro that was rumoured?
But damn, damn damn that GPU. A 60% upgrade from a poor baseline of 4 years ago sucks. Was really hoping for Hades Canyon or even something on the lower end.
I've seen in two posts the statement that the new Mini can't be used as a HTPC - could someone tell me why ...
Well yeah, which is a considerable premium and basically defeats the purpose of it being a tiny unit when you have a large egpu enclosure on your desk.Apple sort of expects you to use an eGPU anyway.
Yup, the 2018 Mac Mini has sure plenty to satisfy folks at the pro or performance end of the market. However, those wanting a modestly priced, modestly specced machine will be disappointed. I don't see it as replacement for my base model 2009 Mac Mini, which remains adequate for most of my humble needs.Just had a quick look at the event coverage, and it seems like there will could be some bragging rights for geeks with multiple 64gb 6-core mini's in an array. Looks really nice to me... far more than I expected. Bravo Apple!
But those wanting a sub-$600 base model with a hard drive better grab a 2014 Mini while they still can.![]()
Why would the SSD not last for years? With a soldered in Apple SSD, the life of the new mini will be determined by the life of the drive. I'd rather have soldered RAM than the hard drive.
I can't see this new mini having a very good resale value years from now with the original worn out drive tagging along for the ride with no way to replace it.
Yeah, SSD's are in no danger of being 'worn out' after a few years. Why would the SSD not last for years?
Looks like i was bang on the money with my prediction of core i3-8100 (ok not 8300)/ i5-8500/ i7-8700.
Most surprising to me is they managed to get 65W in the same small form factor. If you look at the backside the vents are much larger now though.
All in all a fantastic powerful little machine. Connectivity great too. They hit a home-run with this one.
I prefer: "Well, that escalated quickly!"That didn't take long.
