Better for what....?

As a teacher I use a computer to create documents (Pages) and keep records (Numbers). I use iTunes for audio for most of the courses I teach, and occasionally the DVD player. I have transferred a few tapes to digital using Garage Band and iTunes. Occasionally I use Keynote for presentations. One course I teach has everything on its own app, which I have downloaded. These days I need a computer at work most days, so recently acquired MacBook Air now takes care of most requirements. However, I still do prefer create documents on my Mac Mini with a full sized keyboard and a decent sized monitor. I got the Air to supplement the Mini, not to replace it.

Interestingly, Apple is continuing to offer the 2017 MacBook Air along side the 2018 model.

In my personal life I do a bit of photography and have provided shots of sports to the local press for several years. With the modest gear I have (Fujifilm X20) my 2009 Mac Mini and iPhoto were fine. Photos 1.0 less so, but with the MacBook Air I now have Photos 3.0, which is more than adequate, however with just a 128 GB SSD, storage is a shortcoming for archives...... Would be too with the cheapest 2018 Mac Mini..... and speccing extra memory would see the cost go up quickly. Cost effective storage is an issue.

An upgrade of camera gear would see bigger file sizes which might prove a challenge to the 2009 Mini, but on my budget (I earn about $US 1,000 a month) that is not going to happen any time soon.

Other that that I mostly use my Mac Mini for entertainment and news (I don't have a TV and prefer internet radio from Aotearoa or Blighty to local offerings) and communications (I am an expat).

Blazing performance may be of benefit for a videographer, a professional photographer, a researcher or accountant crunching a lot of numbers, or other professionals. There is not much in it for average folks, who have long been well served by modestly specced Mac Minis

Fast boot time....? Who cares for a machine that is mostly active or in sleep mode 24/7.

Snappy opening apps....? Most of the apps I use frequently are open most of the time..... probably the same for many average folks at home.

Fast search time for files..... Nice, but I am not frequently opening and closing files, and can wait if it does take a few more seconds. Time to get up and take stretch anyway.

The "much better 2018 Mac Mini" would provide little or no significant benefit over what I have now, beyond being able to upgrade to Mojave, thus enjoy support and updates for a few extra years. I could pay cash for one right now from my reserves, but seems poor value for money to me.

At this stage, when the original 120 GB HDD fails on my 2009 Mac Mini, repair (with a bigger HDD, say 512 GB) is more likely to be the call rather than replace with the 2018 Mac Mini Pro, which has way more performance than I need, or could even use.

Now that the 2018 model is available, a lot of people will offload their souped-up 2012 models.
You might be able to make a good deal on one of those.
But seeing where you live, shipping might be a big problem. I just checked and I'm not sure our postal service here would ship to that region of the world - and at what (eye-watering) price. And that disregards any taxes and tariffs, which come on-top.

In any case, if you're really short on money, I'd try stocking up on spare parts for your current Mini.
They can usually be sourced from Aliexpress for relatively little money (in exchange for long shipping times).

For people like you, it's a really sad that Apple is now truly a high-end brand and its products likely out of reach for ever.

Lastly, remember: we might have the money - but you have the sunsets and the time. That's worth something, too.

Great. If that's your choice, you are done. I would like to make my own choice, just as you can. The thread will stop when people stop posting.
It is not a choice of mine to make. It is my opinion that would be the best way to end this EPIC thread. To honor it. And the fact that really, it has served its purpose. IMHO. I do think it should certainly be left up for all to enjoy and not deleted. Whoever said, "Because it has come full circle" had the right idea. I back that idea.

I suppose we could g on forever arguing about whether the thread should be shut down, preventing anyone who still wants to post on it from doing so, or not. So I won't say any more on this particular subject after this. The thread made its first full cycle in 2014. Some people were happy, many were not, and it kept going. Now we have another new mac mini. Some people are happy, some are waiting to learn more details about what is actually in it and how it performs, and some are unhappy with this new mac mini. It seems premature to shut it down forcibly, to me, but obviously others have a different perspective. I expect it could be hashed out to the point of consensus, perhaps around page 1000.

The market for those who have needs satisfied by 2009 mini specs cannot be effectively addressed in a 2018 refresh. After nearly 10 years of technological advancement, anything Apple sells new will be overkill for you. You can hardly expect Apple to make you a 2018 SKU that is priced at a level that matches the 2009 performance you desire.

The market for that computer I would estimate is easily <1% of potential mini buyers. Apple caters to the 80-90% of the market, not the 1%. You are doing the correct thing by keeping your 2009 mini and replacing any part that might go bad.

I’d suggest an inexpensive SSD which would give you a large performance boost, except it is not necessary for your use case so why spend the money?

Hey guys, I have a question. The new week I travel to USA and I've been thinking to buy a MacBook Pro or a new Mac mini, I don't decide yet. If I go for the mini, the most likely is that i will buy a I7 with 8GB and 128GB or the I5 with 8GB and 256GB, both with a eGPU, in the apple store can they have this model o i should order before?

Thanks

Depends what you need it for. If it’s going to sit in one place then you’ll get better value from the Mini as you’re not paying for the screen etc (obviously you’ll need a monitor, but you can get a decent one for a fraction of ApplePrice). If you need portability then it’s the MBP (or a MacBook/Air depending on the spec requirement).

I have both, and I use the Mini 10:1 over the MBP. I also got the MBP used, as I won’t pay stupid prices for a new one. Just be real careful who you buy from.

Yes, the 95% of the time I used my actual MacBook Pro connected to my big display, but sometimes I like take it with me. The big problem is that the keyboard doesn't seem to be very reliable, and where I live is very difficult to repair. This is it a deal breaker, but i do not want to resign portability.

The base model Mini is a disgrace now. I can't believe the price of entry to get a Mini now. My first two Macs were Mini's. I had basic needs and wanted to keep my costs low. My first Mini, decent monitor, keyboard, and trackpad were a huge savings versus the base model iMac at that time. Then I upgraded to a new Mini down the road when the first one got old. It was the 2012 model and I got it on sale when the 2014 model debuted. I think I paid $400 for it new at Microcenter. I sold that Mini and my setup earlier this year because Apple didn't update the Mini for so long. Good call. The current Mini offers 128 GB at start which is pathetic for a desktop. Plus once you factor in peripherals you might as well get an iMac.

I'm grateful there was a "cheap" Mac that allowed me to afford entry into the Mac world 10 years ago. I feel bad for current consumers whose options are now more confusing and expensive to do the same.

same goes for the money...come on 800$ is much in these days after all the
inflation? this new 800$ is the old 500$
Yes, it is a lot. Especially considering 1. the competition 2. it's not $800 in my country. It's $1076. 3. Adjusted for inflation the Mac Mini should cost $533.17....

Wonder if the choice for 8th gen CPU is simply due to the fact that 9th gen doesn't support HT except for the top notch model.
If that's true, I wonder what it means for future updates. Will a new Mac mini almost certainly be coming?

My new mac mini has not yet arrived so it's almost certainly coming. :)

It's also yet to be exhaustively reviewed and examined by the community here. I just hope I'm here to witness the 15,000th post.

Well it has been informative, frustrating, funny and at times even brought about some soul-searching but the gripe has been silenced and surely I'll be seeing some of you again more likely after we score a new Mini - and ... almost certainly Apple will make moves that roil our passions and cast doubt about our allegiance but it's good to know there's a place where it all gets scrubbed clean.

I'll see ya at the next spin cycle ...

i was kinda wondering when @Cape Dave will return to the Mini ... and I guess @sublunar will build a Mini silo and crack the code to Dark Energy and remember "Appleleaker", gone like a ghost, I guess they're in the slammer for leaking the real deal on the Mini but what really concerns me is somewhere in 2020 and @Micky Do will have found a way to continue using his 2005 Mini, almost certainly, albeit slowly ... very slowly! (Stay-Tuned)

... and thanks to all the others I didn't mention (far too many) !!!
