Hehe!! Finally the New Mini is here!! Nice one. Would be great to have a dGPU but was expected not to so not disappointed. Going to grab one

Time to start another thread

Finally time to move on and retire this thread. Talk about perseverance. Four years is a long time to wait for an upgrade on any computer.

yeah it will run loud when you are pushing the i7 hard. I think the i7 8700t would have been better choice.

I had heard of noise issues with modern 27" iMacs when specified with the i7 CPU - wouldn't the fact that the i7 is the presumed same one destined for the 2018 21.5" iMac make a difference? Both at 65w rather than the 95w K series parts in the 27 iMac? Obviously proper reviews taking into account heat, noise and vibration will be important this time around.

At least Apple have acknowledged this with the development of the cooling system which has eliminated the HDD drive bays entirely. The noise factor under sustained load will definitely be one to watch in reviews.

There will always be something faster and better in the future (well, except the 2014 Mini). The topic of this thread was satisfied today. Time for a new "waiting" thread.

I think they are upset apple removed the IR sensor in the front. Originally for “front row” which has been abandoned for years, but still nice when using iTunes.

Wouldn't an App be just as good in this case if not better? This is aside from any issues from audio pass through in the Mini which I would presume could be fixed by buying a USB-C DAC with suitable specs?

I see overheating issues sometimes the 2012 quad cores would overheat. Its a good model. If it does not overheat.

So buy the base with the i7 upgrade. cost you 1099 add an external 2tb ssd as a booter cost 300 1399 and add 1 16 gb stick of ram cost 150 you have a
24gb
2tb ssd
with a i7 8700

net 1650 it will drive a 4k

Wouldn't it run better with a matched pair of RAM sticks? I'd be intending to put 32Gb of RAM in (matched pair) having left the 8Gb standard RAM in a box.

And isn't the 2Tb SSD going to be slower than the internal one (which is admittedly is going to cost more). To be fair, I'd probably be happy doing that too given the price of Apple SSD.

I'm on the fence with the i7 - it's not out of the question because of price (for a change) - but the potential for additional heat and noise under load due to the extra threads is one to be checked out first. The i5 is enough of an upgrade from a base model 2012 anyway.

AppleInsider's Mac mini FAQ about just one Thunderbolt controller tying into the 4 TB3 ports is a bit concerning so I'd want to see if there's any serious downsides with this configuration if an eGPU was added. I was only expecting 2 ports anyway, with 4 USB-A ports.

The AppleInsider guy is conflating iGPU limitations with the limitations of the TB3 controllers. I would expect dual controllers at a minimum, if not one on each port. There's no reason not to if they didn't stuff in an dGPU.

Let's wait for the tear down. Depending on the TB3 chip used it should be able to power 2 ports at full speed at the very least if there really is only one. It's unclear how the PCIe lanes are arranged in relation to the PCH and there will be 2 controllers in the Macbook pros with Touch Bar and probably only one in the 2018 MBA and 2017 nTB MBP.
