The unintuitive methods for finding content on the News, Apple TV and Podcast apps have hurt these services and are a continual reminder that Apple is not perfect.

This sucks - I'll be canceling my NYT subscription that I have specifically because of the integration with Apple News.

I'm not going to open the NYT app... I like to see a diverse set of articles from a variety of publishers as in Apple News and Google News.

Oh well, I still have my WashPo subscription - that will have to do.

What about all the non current (news) events publications? I like AN+ because I browse lots of magazines. Typically for me, it's not worth spending ~$10 for a single magazine issue that I have a passing interest and thus not interested in subscribing.

I love the idea of Apple News, but the app is a sorry mess of an excuse for a pleasant reader experience. I can't believe anyone would be willing to pay for quality news, then be stuck using Apple's app to read it.

I use it throughout the day to pull up news and read it. What's actually bad about it and who does it better? I'd give a shot to anyone who does it better really.

I pay for Apple news+. It’s a bargain for The New Yorker, the Atlantic and being a one stop shop for Vox etc. I also susbscribe to NYTimes separately but wish I could use my NYTimes login to use it on Apple News just like Washington Post And the Economist. Apple News is not for everyone but for some it’s well worth it.

Very much this. I glance at the headlines occasionally during the day. It’s nice to be able to get articles from a lot of different sources collated in one spot, without creepy tracking. Show me a demonstrably better app and I’ll consider switching. I’ve been reading with ads, but considering subscribing. With NYT gone, it’s a small bit less appealing.

FYI: Apple News+ subscribers are 125 million+. This isn't a lack of subscribers to News+. NY Times wanted more of the pie and were rebuffed. NY Times has been substandard for several years now.

Of course not.... why pay for a subscription to Apple where you can just paywall yourself ..:/ (for future editing)

To almost paraphrase SJ, AppleNews+ is like a baby version of the respected websites. Take "The Times" for example, you're not getting the full paper, just a slimmed down version which can't be searched. Nothing infuriates me more than not being able to see an article behind a paywall and it's asking me to pay, which I do. TC or EC should've insisted from the start that all providers offer full functionality, but of course this would've meant it never would've got off the ground.

Good riddance. Less junk on my phone is better.

You could always control which sources you see and don’t see in the app settings. Or maybe don’t open the app? Or delete it? How in the world does the NYT leaving Apple News cause a great sigh of relief over what’s on your phone?

aapl news should be a free like google news minus the adverts

Lol. Google News is the most aggressively intrusive and privacy invading news site in the world. Google News without ads (or tracking) is like a glass of water without the glass or the water.

It's too bad. The New York Times is an excellent sources of news, investigative reporting, and diverse opinion. (To those dissing it, you must not have been reading it very often the past couple of years. Great reporting.)

As others do, we subscribe directly to the Times and the Post. However, one should look at all the tracking cookies from Google and Facebook that it embeds inside Safari — even though one is using the app!

Hence, not only do they want ALL of the sub $, they also want all of privacy invading, advertising dollars. The apps for those two critical papers are littered with ads, even if one is subscribed to them! And, even if one isn't a Google or Facebook user! It's horrendous! The ads are even embedded within stories!

I've never used Apple News; does it embed ads? Does it use tracking cookies? I certainly hope not. Maybe I should try it...

🤣 So many people defending Apple. Good for the New York Times. They are doing great without Apple News. Apple is the one who needs to improve the offering to attract publishers. Also Apple News app is only available in the US, Canada, UK and Australia.

I use Safari for NYT and WaPo with an adblocker, ghostery, and lockdown. No ads, tracking, etc.

Apple has to bundle this service with its other services to keep it viable. I dumped my subscription and opted for a more expensive subscription to the Washington Post. It’s through Apple and when it’s done this month I’ll be canceling in favor of a direct subscription so all revenue goes directly to the Post. I’m an Apple Music and Apple TV+ subscriber and have looked hard at Apple Arcade. If they had some some kind of bundle that featured Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and Apple News+ and offered it for $15 or $16 a month I’d buy it. I don’t see how Apple News+ will ever be seriously viable without something like that. I don’t get enough value out of it priced at $9.99 on its own.

🤣 You subscribed to the New York Times but never opened the official app? You were paying and not getting the full experience; Apple News app did not have all the articles from the Times app.

I live in Canada. The only way I see NY Times articles is through Apple News+. I don't subscribe to individual news websites because there are too many; I don't want to have 20 subscriptions. I like using News+ because articles come from all over the place.

News+ needs to reformat for my big-screen TV when I mirror my 11 Pro Max using Apple TV. Reading News+ and magazine articles is better on a large TV screen.

This thing would have been more successful if Craig was heading it.
My first thought was, is this a Crazy Eddy project?

NYT seems like a pile of content surrounded on all sides by paywalls. ...like, a silo. When I am in the mood for a purely urban perspective on popular matters, I find The New Yorker does it better anyway.
