They never built an 8GB iPhone 3GS either until right before the iPhone 4 came out. iPhone 3GS was only 16GB and 32GB when first released. To create the current low end iPhone, they just reduced both storage and price. My opinion is that they will to the same to iPod touch 3G to create the low end iPod touch in Sept 2010.
Anyway who cares about $199 model! It will be hamstrung in some egregious way and not much to hope for. The good stuff will be in the $299+ models. Hope Apple gets that right!
Haha.^^I wouldn't go as far as having a smilie seizure, but I agree. The Shuffle is becoming more and more for simple music playback, the Nano for media and video, and the Touch for gaming and heavier media consumption.
Well, maybe they should increase screen size.Yes, it is possible, it wouldnt be that great though because the screen is so small.
Wow. Thanks.I took the liberty of researching the component costs of iPhone 4 for you.
Post includes - Total price, Features we might see in the next iPod Touch, the cellular/unnecessary-for-the-touch items, flash memory/possibilities, the link to the teardown, and an outro.
In total - $187.50
Design (enclosure, hardware, metals, plastics, etc., not screen/glass) - $10.80
Glass - $10.00 (back? I don't know)
512mb of RAM - not listed
Display - $28.50
A4 chip - $10.70
5mp back camera - $9.75
VGA front camera - $1.00
Gyroscope - $2.60
3GS 3.2mp camera - $9.55 (note: technology has improved, so the cost is probably less now, taken from the 3GS teardown)
(what I beleive to be) all things phone and cellular
double data rate - $2.70
GSM/Edge transceiver - $2.33
GPS Chip - $1.75
Compass - $.70
Miscellaneous Connectivity components - $.80
Radio Frequency baseband - $11.72
Miscellaneous Radio Frequency Components - $8.25
In total - $28.25 (25 cents off from the display.)
Now on to flash memory. Using math I derived what the possible costs of different increments would be, using the 16gb price from the teardown.
8gb - $13.50
16gb - $27.00
32gb - $54.00
64gb - $108.00
128gb - $216.00

Yep.AWESOME RESEARCH!!! But where is the price of cameras? Thats what were eager to learn si we can find out if the 4g will have a camera....
I dont think thats the exact price. Maybe similar, but not very close.216 bucks for 128gb of flash memory...OUCH!!!
Thanks.Above post updated with a fix on a price, gyroscope, front and back camera, 3GS camera, design, glass, RAM and an intro/table of contents.
Yep.Ya, I think that's proof enough there will be no 128GB iPod Touch this time around.
Ewww... VGA.1 buck for a front camera?......HELLO FACETIME!!!!
Gyroscope...idk, it'll probably be there.
Yep.It is mostly the design challenges with the cameras. But the front one can easily fit in even the current design.
Plus, most apps are compatible!^I agree. And IMO, the gyroscope is a no-brainer. It's not really marketed as a premium feature, and it's perfect for games, which seem to be what Apple is marketing the touch for.![]()

Whos buying on release date?
So am i.Apple ripped on these cost estimates. They also said the iPhone 4 has a higher cost structure than iPhone 3GS and have to take a bit of a hit on profit margins to remain aggressive on pricing. It's in their latest quarterly earnings call. You can look up transcript online.
Other notes: iPod touch sales are up 48% from last year.
I am worried that we will be disappointed with iPod touch 4. Apparently, they do not need to be terribly aggressive with iPod touch features and still have good sales.
I wont buy on release date even if i like the features; there might be something wrong with it.Im going to try to buy on release date, if I like the features
Post a review if you get one!I'm already thinking that if I can raise the money somehow, I'll line up outside the Toronto Apple Store and buy one. I'd like to get the midnight experience.

Hmmmm... Just in case. I think ill buy on eBay, anyone else? All i have to do is find a deal cheaper than.... about $320.There are not going to be any problems with the iPod touch 4G's Wi-Fi reception, I bought a 2G touch in October of 2008, and it was amazing, no problems for the year that I owned it. Just never buy one of Apple's first generation new products.
^Airplane mode was put in to disable the damn persistent WiFi that eats battery life.
