Yes they do.

Yes it does, but they still have to account for the workers, and the shipping, and so on. However ridiculous it is, they will probably want to maintain a higher profit than that. But i dont think they should need to, especially since they make like $300+ per iPhone 4.

Correct. And I did not account for everything, like ram, wifi, battery, etc.

$300+? Really? Thats quite a bit per phone, but I may be wrong.
They sell them to ATT for like $600+ or whatever, and GregR calculated the cost of the parts and it came out to about $200, and then work and shipping and such, and id probably guess about a $300+ profit per phone, depending on how much storage it has.

Edit: And he hasnt calculated for battery, ram, wifi components, etc., so im just gonna throw in an extra $50 for component cost, even though thats probably way over what those components cost.

$50 is under-guessing. I went back and calculated other stuff. It amounts to about $50 with battery, wifi, touchscreen, other weird components of electro-ness which I don't know what they are. Ram price is not listed. So with the other stuff, it's $50+ RAM. so in total, the component cost is around $199. Which eliminates the possibilty of an entry-level with Anything more than 3rd gen specs.

So they are going to put 3G ipods on the shelf next to 4G? With one (or two) camera(s) and a potential redesign, that will make the 3G look pitiful.

It will be absolutely stupid to make a 3G the base model. Not many people would buy it if all it was was a 3G. They need at least a camera to make people buy.

Not really, apple products sell.

If you keep the 3G as the base, then people will go. hmmm, that's a cheap ipod touch, ill have that one.

and it will sell millions

How many 3G ipods will sell if they are sitting next to a 4G with a camera? Faster, better graphics, a camera. Most people wouldn't look twice at a 3G.

I dont think so. Some people will go: hmmmm... Looks the exact same as mine, bye.

But, some will sell. Not as much as if they had a camera, though.

Some people are on budgets. But if they arent on budgets, or there budget is capable of $300+ then they will probably buy the 4G over the 3G which is probably just what Apple wants.

So there's is actually a chance that they do not make any radical changes in the design and keep the crappy chrome
maaaaan...

Yeah, but if the price is right, think about how many people are still buying the iPhone 3gs, when there is brand new better looking hardware out there. (iPhone 4)

The $199 is a magical price point. They even mentioned this in the 2009 iPod Keynote event. It doesn't matter what they do with the touch that's priced at $199. They will move units.

Lots of debate on pricing and so forth. As I see it, there is less than 1% chance that the 4G comes in at something less than $299/$399 list price.

And for the base model $199 was regarded as an important price point, so that will remain. However, for $199 you will be getting something very stripped down, and most likely a 3rd gen model. Apple will not give away the goods for cheap. They never, ever do.

iPhone 3GS still exists for $99 plus contract. I don't understand why anybody buy that instead of just coughing up another $100? Nevertheless, Apple still offers it for a low-end option. I'm ignoring antenna-gate, since I dont' think that factors into that particular business decision by Apple. Apple will still over something stripped down for iPod touch for $199, just don't get your hopes up about what it will be. No retina, likely same screen as iPhone 3GS, same CPU as 3GS, same RAM as 3GS, camera unlikely, facetime unlikely, probably 16GB. In other words, most likely a 3rd gen model. Yes the $199 model will pale to the $299/399 models, just as the iPhone 3GS pales to the iPhone 4.

I think what everyone is trying to say is that although leaving a 3g as a base model will still be profitable for apple, if they upgraded it with a camera at least, then this could force or sway those who already have the 3g touch to upgrade, resulting in even more units sold. It would only make sense, as an 8 dollar component change could result in millions of more units sold...

The base model can still be a base, just with a camera. Either that, or they could give the base model the A4 chip, and retina display IF the retina display is coming to the touch line. Then the higher end models would receive the cameras.

If Apple is releasing the rumored 7" iPad, it will def. have a lower price than the current 9.7" iPad, it will at least have to be about $80-$100 lower which puts it at $399-$429, which is about the same price of an iPod touch 3G 64GB, Apple needs to realize that $299 and $399 for an iPod now a days is a little too much and they need to drop it $30-$50 on each model except the base model. Heck, now you can get a full size laptop for under $300.

If the prices keep going down, what will be able to go into the ipod/ipad?

I don't want a price drop, either, this time around.

If the price drops, the upgrades I'm looking for would be very unlikely. Maybe next year a price drop would be reasonable, but not this year.:D

+1, i am prepared to pay the price for a high spec'd ipod 4, with retina display (the most expensive possible component) i dont think we will see a price drop, maybe £20 ($35) if we are lucky.

couldn't agree more. This is the most likely thing apple will do. Keep in mind apple needs to profit from the itouch unlike the iphone where they get 500-600 bucks and you pay 200-300 upfront. The ipod touch is not subsidized. Honestly for 100 bucks for retina and camera it seems worth it.

Agreed. But on the same token, as a camera equipped base model would sway some non-buyers to buy, it would also swap some 32GB buyers to just get the $199 instead. In those cases, Apple loses money. I think I would be one of those people actually. If the base model has some of the upgrades, or at least the camera part, I'm going to be very tempted just to go with the base. If they leave it just like a normal 3rd gen, I'll definitely want to get the 32GB one.

Hope there is a 128GB model, but i doubt it. it would be very very expensive!

I think alot of us are, can only hope apple give us what we want!

what's the point of putting retins display and other unnecessary stuff if they cannot improve its audio quality which is not as good as walkman/cowon?
